For all the naysayers out there as a former teacher of 6 -year -olds, to illustrate that there are microscopic things (viruses, bacteria (in kid talk germs) on their hands even if they look clean I used to get petri dishes from a high school science lab and each kid would put their hand in the medium & they'd put the tops back on their own dish. Lo and behold a week or so later there would all kinds of things growing. Then we'd talk AGAIN why we need to wash our hands before eating and after using the toilet! This is an outstanding lesson for 3 to 4 year olds.
I am not one of those naysayers u mention of, while it's fun and creative way to explaining things to children (on those delicate years).
I fear those "fun & creative" way is will be long lasting in their memory.
As i ( & many of us should, CMIIW ) still intentionally remember those "fun & creative" explanation but not necessarily 100% true to show how things (internally ?) work / process. Especially in this matter (how soap works against germs) :D

I had a homec teacher that uses florescent paint and black lights. We'd wash our hands to the point we thought we got it all, then she turned off the lights and used a black light to show how difficult it was.

It was a magic show for those children.
I first came across this when Professor Lucy Rogers posted the same experiment, it really is an effective way to demonstrate to children how important hand washing is.
Smart teacher telling these kids how to protect themselves she's not only helping the kids but she's also helping their parents and grandparents too 😁 thank you for the smart people that are still here

Yes. I do understand that it is not the way how it works but those kids will definitely wash their hands. Like yesteryear, our parents told us to dry our hair or we will catch a cold. And we got a cold, and our parents would say I told you. We now know better. 🤔🤔🤔

As a kid I remember playing with something like this. Instead of black pepper it was something else I just can't remember what it was. I loved seeing everything move away.

I remember my teacher did this with a fish in the water back in elementary school. The fish jetted across the water. Similarly, you could have a cutout blob in the center representing the virus, instead.

I found this out while I was dishwashing.
If you put a single drop of dish soap on a greasy bowl with water all the oil will disappear or move away from the soap.

Aw, the experiment is not _quite_ right, but the astonishment of the kids is everything.
I have a degree in Soaping, with a minor in Blackpeppering and was aware of this effect.
When I worked in New Mexico they use this as a joke you put salt and pepper in the water and say the blacks and the whites are having fun in the swimming pool and then Mexican guy would stick his finger in which had soap and you didn't know it is like here comes the Mexican everybody runs and all the salt pepper would run away from his finger hilarious
My old Uncle(Archie Bunker) Richard did the same joke in the 70s except Polish joke. Boy were they big.

Well no, the virus cell is basically made up of oil/fat, the soap clings to the particles and pulls them away from your skin. That's why washing with just water doesn't do enough. Soaps also contain alkali's which are mildly abrasive and help to get the dirt off your skin. For a demonstration this works fine and it gets the point across.
