  • This is one of the best and easiest homemade capture and release humane rat/mouse traps! Easy to build, easy to bait, easy to release and best of all, it's humane and there's no springs or levers to wind up or load! The mouse, rat or vole cannot escape or chew his way out of this mouse trap. Mice and rats are not harmed in any way during capture. As a matter of fact, the mouse, rat or vole remains very calm since there is no slamming doors or snapping latches to scare them! Mice can be released calmly and easily without fear of getting bitten even by the most "fearful of mice" person!! Simple operation makes this diy homemade rat mouse trap fun and easy to build (great parent and kid project to learn about balance) and adjust for easy trapping and best of all easy release. Just use a dab of peanut butter to bait the trap. It's the best do it yourself homemade humane live release rat mouse trap you'll find! A 3" PVC pipe and a few other common items is all you'll need. I'll be building a humane squirrel trap next so you can capture and release squirrels easily too so subscribe and don't miss my upcoming "diy humane squirrel trap". Thanks for watching. FYI: A mouse weighs 5 Canadian Nickels = .02 KG or .7 OZ

    Hi Chris, I made a similar trap out of 3" sch 40 pipe with a wooden lid and heavy iron wire hinge that I made with scrap from around house and caught first rat during first night with Parmesan cheese bait. The rats do trip the door occasionally so I built a wooden box around the tube and had to angle the front of box to get it to work right due to the teeter totter tube. Works great, and most humane way to catch rodents. Caught 5 so far and I think I do not have any more under the trailer, no more noises in our walls at night! I usually drop them off 5 miles from home in wooded areas, hopefully they won't make it back soon, lol. I thought the last thing I caught was a rattle snake, it was just mama rat, she was heavy. Please be safe people, as snakes and other animals can enter these traps as well. Thank you for your idea Chris!

    Cool video! I've just built a quick mouse trap that is similar to this one. Although the concept in this video is smart and simple, I think the build could still be simplified, reducing the number of parts and tools used. The version I've made doesn't use a "hinge", nor screws, nor different stoppers even if the principle is the same. Instead of a hinge you can quickly build one using two flaps of plastic joined along an edge with tape. The tape acts as the hinge as it allows movement. I've used a yogourt plastic lid for the flaps. This "flap" is used instead of the orange cap and instead of building the lock that keeps it closed, I've simply glued a magnet that keeps the flap closed once the tube tips over. Here are the parts I've used: A plastic bottle (the tube), a yogourt plastic lid (the flaps), tape (the hinge), bamboo skewer (the pivot and the pikes that hold the flap open), 2 magnets (the lock), cardboard (the base and the pivot brackets). Here are the tools I've used: Hot glue and scissors.
    Cheers!

    These no kill types of traps are best for reuse. Rats especially can smell the death from another rat, and won't usually go to that area. Having a removable lid on the far end where you can place a dab of peanut butter would probably work well.

  • @jonminer9891
    @jonminer9891 Год назад +2

    Hi Chris. I like your traps. You need to cover or somehow protect the far end of the trap. Both mice and especially rats will often climb all over these types of traps which will set them off.

The clear plastic lid to a 3m electrical tape box is a perfect fit for the sealed end and I had a cover for a lawn irrigation valve box for the other end. Hopefully the little varmints won't be able to chew through the sealed end.

    Hi Chris, i made the bottle version thinking i have a mouse in the garden that kept eating my pumpkins, well it turned out to be a rat. He triggered the auto sensor light last night, i looked out the window and there he was, a very well fed rat that ate half of every pumpkin. Do you know how heavy a rat is?

    • @chrisnotap
      @chrisnotap  6 лет назад +3

      Just set it for the light weight of a mouse and it should catch anything that is heavier. Rats are very difficult to catch. They are very very cautious. Could take days for it to enter the the trap. They are much smarter than mice.

    I made this with a 4" diameter pvc pipe, which I had and used a 5" galvanised steel round end cap with the crimped edges. I made it 16" long, but I forgot that perhaps I should have made it longer. I am finding it difficult to get the balance right. Should I be using a longer pipe? If so what length would you recommend? Is there a formula for this? Also, you mentioned making an update video for some sort of protective surrounding.

    • @chrisnotap
      @chrisnotap  5 месяцев назад +1

      You could first try getting a plastic end cap since the 5" cap you're using is probably to heavy. If that doesn't work you need to lengthen the main pipe up to 24" to make it easier to balance. Here how I made one out of 4" PVC....ruclips.net/video/I7XZ8Yr6x8g/видео.html

    The rat may feel enclosed with the cap on the end. My tube has a large grid screen on the end with the fruit and nuts bait. Viewable from both ends, so it doesn't look threatening. Also, instead of an orange cap that looms over the opening, used clear plastic that is closed with the aid of a small spring. You need lots of speed to lock 'em in.

    Hi there, thanks for this. We lost our pet mice (4 mice) and tried everything. So I built yours using "crittertrail" tubes instead (hopeing these recognize the tube(s), and it worked over night! We actually got 2 for 1 on one catch, one was a small baby 2-3 weeks old and the other was one of the pet mice. Is this possible? My only explanation is that the baby was too light to trigger it and the larger one followed it in (mother?) and triggered it. I heard it and put them into a quarantine cage, reset it and within 1 hour caught a second pet mouse... 2 out of 4...not bad. Am waiting for more catches. But it seems to work awesome, thank you!!
