      The wire tip is dangerous because a child can step on it and itch its foot. You should use a longer wire and bend it so that it is curved, so that it does not have a sharp point and thus it is not stepped on by a child, or by a blind old man.

      *QUESTION: I realize this is meant to be a "humane" catch & release trap & I'm guessing it can't really turn around in there, so if I intend to later kill it to eat, do you have any suggestions on killing it safely, perhaps while it is still in the trap?*

    This is sequential logic that should be taught in schools. It is a practical manner to introduce many movements including mathematics and computer logic in a manner of speaking as all the trap is, it is a computer that catches squirrels with its logic.
    Many children are sick and tired of sitting in a class learning symbols of the alphabet with its artificiality. Many children like movements and logic and here is a unit that could provide interest to children.
    * It teaches balance, torque. levers.
    * It teaches geometry and trigonometry through the change of distances in the release mechanicsm.
    * It teaches the shutting unit and the closing action where the momentum and conservation of energy would cause bouncing.
    * It teaches how to damp the action through the magnets.
    * I like the locking device where the shutter is locked by the barrier you included.
    * it teaches the relation between circumference and a diameter and if measurements are taken even pi could be determined!
    * It teaches about tangents to a curve
    * As far as handling the material itself, its springiness, its moment of inertia as one notices the delay involved.
    Schools should introduce such adventurous spirits in schools and so many more static and dynamic issues.
    Congratulations, many teachers would not approve of this method of knowledge transfer, but it is to be considered as to its effect. Education should not be symbolic and for the convenience of the teachers, but for the good and interest of the students.

      Traditional teachings produced great scientists and engineers with spectacular achievements like sending probes to distant planets, the Cassini spacecraft to Saturn, among others. The effect of US school system is already there. No other country, including Russia, was able to emulate US space exploration. "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

    So, I bookmarked this like two years ago intending to build one but never got around to it. Then a few weeks ago they started eating my cushions on my porch swing and chairs, so I made one. Awesome man. In the last three days I've caught six squirrels and released them over at the city park about five miles away. I will probably incorporate the improved tips from your other video here pretty soon. Right on man.

  • @willbruner6885
    @willbruner6885 6 лет назад +3

    Just a couple of changes. Drill a couple of holes toward the back for air and light for the squirrel to see the peanuts. Instead of using a coupler you can use a short piece of the 4" and split it along the top. To avoid the door hanging open a little when the trap goes down cut the pipe at a small angle so that when it goes down the door will be vertical.

    I’ve just made this as I have 5 pesky squirrels wrecking my garden and bird feeders, I just sit and watch them through the window as they dig up my spring bulbs and eat them…. it works a dream, I caught 2 and relocated them 10 miles away in woods away from houses, thanks Chris, genius build👍….. Update!, I have now caught 8in total, just one to go, added a 120gm weight to the door end so the squirrel goes to the very end of the tube as some have escaped as the tail has not gone in and kept the door open, still an amazing build!…..

Also used small Folgers plastic coffee "can" instead of PVC cap that was $9! Kind of defeated purpose of building one cheaper than you can buy. Also, you are able to remove it easily if needed. Brilliant. One thing I learnt is squirrels are smart. Had like 4 squirrels out back digging up my yard. Used a rat trap.. was able to catch one. When I went to fetch the caught squirrel, 1 other was trying to hep it escape and the other 2 up on the trees watching. After resetting the trap later in the afternoon one of the squirrels was approaching the trap but the helper squirrel ran quick and stopped the squirrel from touching the trap. Since, no squirrel has bothered to get the food from the trap...

    This, my friend, is genius.......something I have been working on myself, but as a pack-rat trap that protects the contents of my barn instead of a squirrel catcher, but nonetheless..... a breakthrough!!!! I have tried everything from poison to sticky-pads and they avoid the poison and turn the stickies over so they stick to the concrete.............without getting caught themselves..... Thanks for the finishing touches.........Bravo!

      Mice serve as food for birds of prey, snakes, tarantulas, and large centipedes. They also use to spread grains via feces..but now that we mass plant everything, they aren't useful there

    Brilliant! I respect people who use their brains and come up with ways to deal with things. It doesn't take any brains to pull a trigger or set a snap trap to kill squirrels. These people get no respect at all.
    Well done!

      Tree rats, my neighbor was feeding them as they are,, cute, they thought. The squirrels got into my truck's hood and chewed up wires to the tune of $1400 and got in there three times in total. Used repellents, and other methods till
      I got onto the Ultrasonic repellent generators, and this finally put a stop to it. For now., but have to see what happens next spring.

    • @HsingSun
      @HsingSun 6 лет назад

      The bucket must be deep enough, so the squirrel would not jump out of it.

    I live in an urban area with many large oak trees and consequently many squirrels wreaking havoc on gardens. News that squirrels will possibly have an extra litter in 2024 is not good news.
    Last year I built this PVC trap to the initial design but often found that curious squirrels would climb on top and trigger the mechanism without capture. Also particularly excitable captures could bolt out the flap before fully tipping. I resolved these problems by enclosing the end half with a hardware cloth structure and using magnetic catches to hold the flap. I also put a hardware cloth screen at the end of the tube to increase bait visibility.
    Placing inaccessible nuts in the outer enclosure acts as an extra enticement. I placed the trap at the base of a heavily traveled tree and this Spring I usually have capture within a few hours. Now a very effective trap! Next project is building an owl house!

      After making this I found a cardboard box covering the rear half keeps them from climbing on the rear portion
