I can't remember for sure how many, but it seems like it was as many as 14 one night. This worked great for about five nights, then it didn't work any more. Did they figure it out and then warn their buddies. I still had mice, but the mouse trap didn't work any more. Maybe mice are smarter than we think.

Instead of purchasing or extending the amount needed to purchase, after using the peanut butter out of the Smucker's container(s), simply velcro the used container to the trap as suggested, however, this time instead of using an entire container of new peanut butter, smear the peanut butter around and on the bottom of the inside of the container to make the bait last longer. Just a suggestion.

The best mouse bait for catching mice in your home is whatever you are cooking for dinner in the kitchen. They have been hanging out smelling that food cook. When you turn out the light and go to bed those mice come out looking for that food they been smelling! That is your bait.

I do well indoors with a Victor plastic spring rat trap, and I press peanut butter down into the bait well until it is only flush with the top. You can leave them out baited without the trap set to condition them to coming for the food, but I get them right away without that. I also just discard a trap with the rat. I don't reuse them.
I wonder if this swinging trap made for a larger bucket or small barrel, with water, would work for you. I wonder if polishing the aluminum disc or inside of the barrel with spray shortening would help. good luck!

I tried several variations on this idea and got exactly zero in spite of the droppings around the bucket. Tried several different baits. Finally got a catch trap and found that I had to let them successfully get the bait out without the trap firing. After a couple of successful "eatings", I set the trap and bingo. Maybe if I had locked the bucket down and let them "think" they found a new food source it might have worked.
