I love the fact that if we take this in-universe as a Norway sailor song, it implies that Captain Mallory's crew for some reason are well aware that she sleeplessly stares into the dark during the night, and take it as a point of pride
I think the implication is that she is often on the bridge at all hours of the night, staring out the screens. Which is how the spacers would know that.
In the books she's depicted as being more in touch with and living among her crew than the other captains... but I'm sure every Mazziani ship has its own song about her captain(s)
Same! I recently came upon the Mercedes Lackey songs, and in the album Magic, Moondust, and Melancholy, there is a different version of this song. Honestly, that was the only reason I discovered all of the C.J. Cherryh books, and it was such an awesome descovery!

I really don't know, but have Signy Mallory face Pyanfar Chanur could bring an _interesting_ result. Sure, Mallory has the tactical skills of a sesoned carrier (and before that, ridership) commander. And the raw firepower of _Norway_ behind her. But when it comes to politics, Chanur seems to have the upper hand. After all, Chanur managed to become the only _mekt-hakkit_ in history, and to hold to that position for several years. And it is the politics that really dictates the fates in Alliance-Union Universe.
