This part of the book was amazing to read, just the general Kameradery when Mazian, and then Mallory made the announcement that they were breaking from earth company. A wonderful feeling of standing in the face of the awesome power of the union, even if It is probably futile and would be better not to.
People clinging on to hope of freedom can't see the fear and apprehension in some oneaking a stand against inequity and unrighteous dealings with our great nation's constitution and bill of rights

That last line resonates with me. They call us pirates, they call us villains, they liken us to the monstrous people of millennia past. Well lets be the best damn pirates they they ever made the mistake of creating. What a powerful sentiment to motivate a people, none of this "I am evil because good is dumb" motivation that they have now. Being the bad guy used to be special.
It's almost as though a paramilitary force bent on revenge and convinced on their own righteousness might just be lashing out any targets they can find, rather than having any kind of actual plan to achieve their aims in a meaningful and realistic way. But, of course, there's no real-world examples of that so we can only speculate.
All i'm saying is, Lancer BATTLEGROUP has some serious Alliance-Union vibes and you could totally run a campaign with similar themes in it. I got the book when it came out for public sale and its very good.
It annoys me that the whole thing with Mazian was never concluded. I love the merchanter books, their by far her most interesting parts of the universe but there's so many things that are just never concluded.
revisited in 2024 Now that's a war song every soldier should know and sing! As a christian i feel deeply what horror is being spread. So let this song sing out the truth of our past and future and of present times! Sorry for my clumsy English, a German is writing here. The voicing is brilliant and fresh, the rhythm seems out of step but is peculiarly harmonious, this is a piece of music I can treasure.

Make it a movie! Bust those lame SciFi makers!
And give me a time machine to read all of them!
They're findable with a bit of patience and a bit of luck! Just picked up Downbelow Station second hand and on the hunt for the rest.

Not everything has to be a movie.
You know what? I'm starting to think the union is really bad at their jobs .

We're living this tune, right now.
How exactly attacking and killing the unarmed merchanter family in merchanter's luck makes the union bleed?
