This song is the Mazianni ships' crews, singing about how they became "Pirates"; abandonded by Earth's decision to make peace, they refused to stand down and went rogue.
We fought your fight, and we died in droves
In a rear-guard action with no rewards
We spilled our guts to cover your butts
Spending ships and lives we could ill afford!
And now earthside says we can’t win!
But we could’ve won if we got support!

I believe it is a duet. The artists are either Leslie Fish/Doug Adams or Fish/C. J. Cherryh, who wrote the series this song is set in.

Books? Are all these stories actually taken from existing scifi universes? I didn't know that.
@@bonogiamboni4830 Merchanter's Luck, Downbelow Station, Finity's End, and Rimrunners are the ones I'd recommend to read first. She recently returned to that universe with Alliance Rising, and a followup (delayed by medical issues) is in the the works.

You want some context to this ...Apart from reading the whole series By C.J Cheryl, there 's a playlist under the name Finity's end. It explains things, in some measure.
Who's supposed to be singing! The crew of the Norway? The merchanters? Signy?
The Earth Company battle fleet, commanded by Conrad Mazian. The Norway (commanded by Signy Mallory) was one of them; but Norway broke with the fleet when they went rogue and joined with the non-Union stations and merchanters.
Crew and officers of the EC ships as a whole.

It's performed by Leslie Fish, Joan Gaustad, Corey Cole, and Kevin Roche. (source: looking at the liner notes) Some of those could be instrumentalists, but the lead is definitely Leslie.

@@umadbroimatroll7918 No. Very different scenarios. BC's were the failed side of a civil war who surrendered and disbanded. Mazian did neither. he had to be pretty much be destroyed to the last man (of whatever gender). Mazianni went totally rogue, poaching from and preying on the people they were supposed to protect as much as their ostensible enemies, Union. Pressganging people to replace their casualties. BC's did none of that. The piratical behavior is what caused the merchanters to organize into Alliance.
