My focus is on detail and reveal the weaknesses and offer suggestions and solutions. It involves a huge amount of time and effort but worth it when someone appreciates my work. If a dashcam feature is useful and actually works I'd enable it. If the case was designed for better cooling to take advantage of hot air convection I'd have no problem leaving 60FPS enabled. Once I'm done modifying my case will publish the results.

    DIY REPAIRS // Some A119/S owners report stuck or frozen startup screen or scrambled side image. These issues could be caused by buggy Firmware or Failed Firmware Updates or by road vibration loosening all the connections. Always suggest re-flashing the Firmware Update ensuring its the correct file for your model when Troubleshooting then disassemble the Dashcam and open the Lens housing and reconnect both ends of the Sensor cable. If no improvement repeat the same with the thin GPS/Power ribbon cable (delicate). Ensure the ribbon is fully inserted on each end. Look for ribbon breaks/cuts especially on the thin GPS/Power cable, it runs along the corner case screw mount (very bad design) i've almost broken mine during reassembly when closing the clam-shell back cover pinching the thin ribbon cable. The key is to find a misaligned cable, once reconnected test the Dash Cam, its risky to open the Lens housing and GPS backplate connectors, reconnect the primary end first.
    Driving on rough roads or detaching & reattaching the DVR daily puts pressure on the contact plate slowly loosening it over time. On the original version-1 gold-pin contact plate, both screws stripped, forced to glue the tiny 4 contact circuit board to back cover plate. End Users that open their Dashcams should avoid stressing these thin ribbon cable connections, reconnecting them usually restores functionality. The A119/S design is easier than most Dash Cams for DIY Repairs and tinkering.
    Keep in mind all Dashcams / devices are affected by extreme heat causing permanent damage over time. If the Dashcam reaches the internal high-temp limit of 75-80C too often it will reduce the lifespan of the device. Also note VIOFO has on going BUGs in their Firmware so we role-the-dice with each version. Experienced DVR users know this well and expect it, we all becoming BETA testers for device manufacturers. One last tip mentioned in my videos, if the Dash Cam works perfectly on cool days then fails on hot days consider the modifications in my Tips video. Improving air-flow and reducing Menu Setting Features will reduce generated heat, especially changing 60fps to 30fps, during the cooler season change back to 60fps. Hope this Helps someone, let me know... Subscribe today.

    Power required question. The specs do not disclose it but the power adapter says 3.1 amps output. Trouble is, I want to use my car's USB port - but here's the deal - it is only 2.5 amps! Is this enough? ( I want to use the 12 volt outlet for the gps). Thanks again.

    • @bchobbyist
      @bchobbyist  6 лет назад +1

      These Dashcams require 5 volts 0.8-1.2 Amp depending on features enabled (60fps). Video & firmware corruption or failure will occur when insufficient power is supplied. Built-in vehicle USB ports may not supply stable 5 volt 1-2 Amp power and probably isn't filtered to reduce interference/noise/hum. Suggest testing any vehicle USB port with only Dashcam connected with no accessories turned on (radio, lightes, AC) then with accessories all on for drain.

    I have this unit but seems to not wipe out old videos after the card is full... Do we need to manually delete recorded videos or does it do it, it self?

    • @bchobbyist
      @bchobbyist  5 лет назад +2

      Set Loop Recording to 2 or 3 mins, also set G-sensor to Low to prevent too many locked clips after driving rough roads. Look on memory card for RO folder and save or manually delete all those vibration locked clips, easiest done from computer.

    • @ricardohavinga
      @ricardohavinga 5 лет назад +2

      @@bchobbyist thanks I will give it a try and see how it does. You also mentioned something about the card could get damaged with time with the loop generation.
      Could that prevent erasing once it gets full? Great post by the way!

      MicroSD cards use a control circuit to handle write commands, if the card is fake, faulty, damaged or old future write cycles will stop leaving the card in Read-Only state. My video mentions not to use 1min 10min clip sizes, the more frequent writes the faster cards burns out, so double the lifespan by using 2min clips but don't go over 3mins since some MOD firmware can create 1GB files and much too large.
      For Dashcams I suggest NOT using any SanDisk cards, or cards less than 32GB or slower than 20MB/s write speed. You can test any card in a computer to see if it can be read and write 50-700MB videos files to and from without error or delays. In my videos the Lexar and Samsung cards have never fails I'm still using the first one from 2 years ago. Always order/buy cards from known good supplier, eBay and Amazon have tons of fake cards for all brands.
      thanks for contacting me, please Subscribe, need that 1000 goal by end of the year.

    Thanks to this video I was able to setup the 119S cam. The mfr instructions confused me. 9Initial impressions: the screen seems smaller than as seen in the ad but I guess I should have gotten my ruler out to see just how small 2" is; the picture I am seeing from the driver's seat doesn't seem as sharp or clear as the videos but maybe if I loaded them on the pc it would do it justice. Still a little nervous about remembering everything I might need (due to technology information overload).

    • @bchobbyist
      @bchobbyist  6 лет назад +1

      The 2" LCD display is far too small for quality assessment. Remove micro SD card while powered off and review clips on computer. Suggest keeping a second mini-USB cable in vehicle to connect while holding Dashcam in your hand to configure, update or review/delete clips, much easier than reaching up to windshield to change settings.

    BC can you clear this? In the A119S model: is it possible to remove the gps and speed text from a clip with this information embedded ?

    • @bchobbyist
      @bchobbyist  6 лет назад

      yes the embedded GPS data can be stripped from original Dashcam video clip. If you simply plan to share the video and remove audio & GPS data paste it into a video editing program and create a new MP4 file. If the original clip is required and if the recorded GPS speed was 'too slow' that data could be removed from the MP4 file. Hack the MP4 using a HEX editor. Begin by recording 2 test clips of the same length as target clip (3min), open each in HEX editor and search for term gps or GPS and note all locations. This will define the outer GPS container limits. Simply highlight and delete the inner data then save. If memory holds, even the non-GPS clip will contain the header for GPS data position.
      For more fun Hack the GPS data and adjust the 'too slow' speeds to any number. Be warned 'others' can detect this change by comparing the speed of turtles you pass.

    I have a question about the lens rotation on the A119S. Other videos show this dashcam having 4 or 5 clicks of vertical adjustment. My A119S has only 2. How many clicks is this dashcam suppose to have? VIOFO support ha not answered this question.

    • @bchobbyist
      @bchobbyist  6 лет назад +1

      A119S vertical lens adjustment should have 8 click positions. If not view my Disassemble & Tips videos to confirm the spring loaded plastic click ratchet is in place, and capacitors aren't touching the lens module ribbon cable.

      good question, when you see the 'format needed' message press the 'menu' button then use the bottom arrow buttons to find the 'format' option, then press middle red 'ok' button to select 'format'. suggest on all 128GB microSD cards to format twice before using the first time.

      Both A119 & A119S support 8 - 32GB + 64GB + 128GB micro SD cards. Never use SanDisk Ultra for dashcams. All new 64 + 128 GB micro SD cards are exFAT or NTFS and not recognized by Dashcams, must Format.
      1) insert 32+ GB micro SD card into A119/S
      2) power up Dashcam
      3) format message appears
      4) press MENU button
      5) press arrow buttons to find FORMAT

    I am using A119 and noticed that jump from 2.00 firmware to 2.02 degraded quality (over-sharpen, higher compression used?). What FW is giving best picture quality? I am going to purchase over priced Viofo CPL filter to get out some reflection but still disappointed because overwhelming flare problem. Will be doing GPS mount tape-mod soon. Thanks.

    • @bchobbyist
      @bchobbyist  7 лет назад

      suggest FW 2.0 until 2.03-5 corrects image. CPL filter is a must but will only reduce dash reflections, view my A119 vs A119S Comparison video. The lens flaring is much worse on small car windshields due to A119 wide angle 110 degree view. I selected the A119S for this very reason. If they offered an A119 with the 98 degree A119S lens I'd buy it.

      Thank you for your reply. I am in the process of getting a second camera for rear window. Planned to purchase A119S (V2 GPS) as the rear window is privacy (tinted) glass and wider dynamic range of A119S would help. Now I am considering A119S as a front one (narrower angle, less flare I believe) and retire A119 to the back or even resell A119 and get two new, A119S. What would be your recommend?
      How to get this tape you used with gps mod? I found something similar at Amazon, here in the UK.

      Frequency setting only applies to the A/V Audio Video Out side port to an external monitor. Set to 50 Hz for Europe and 60 Hz for North American regions. Almost no one used this obsolete low res video output port, should have been HDMI, ignore the setting and port.

    • @bchobbyist

      Good question, Parking Mode has one advantage, it disables itself as soon as you start the vehicle. Motion Detection remains on and never switches to normal mode for better image quality. Use Parking Mode. If you take DVR out of vehicle and want room security cam enable Motion Detection.

      Viofo Dashcam video clips created from G-sensor events or Emergency button are protected/locked from overwrite looping. When deleting from Dashcam player menu these locked read-only clips must be un-protected/unlocked by pressing the center-triangle Emergency button before deleting. Quick solution to delete protected/locked clips is select Dashcam FORMAT Menu option to erase entire memory card.

    I just received my A119 yesterday and am thankful for your video..... lol. I have the GPS attachment and while tooling around a bit in my car today I thought I had set it for GPS display but when I watched back there was no GPS reading along the bottom. I saw another person's video review last night and he said if it doesn't immediately show up it is because the GPS is trying to get a proper satellite lock and sure enough, after a few minutes of his driving, it showed up. However, mine didn't, so I can only assume I had something set up wrong.
    My display looks like yours when it says NO GPS; does that mean just because the GPS isn't connected at the moment.....? because in my settings I set it up for display all (speed, coordinates...).
    Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I am illiterate when it comes to such things, and it is made worse by watching the ease with which you go through everything..... lol
    Also, after setting the time and date, I am guessing it is imperative to also set up the time zone feature (which as near as I can tell for saskatchewan is -6.....) ?
    Thanks for your time, your video and your patience....

      Common GPS issue not mentioned in my videos but will add to next TIPs DIY. The GPS module seeks signals so if positioned under reflective surface or metal can reduce signal lock. If positioned to close to similar GPS device will reduce signal lock. If vehicle is close to high-voltage overhead lines or beside tall metal buildings will drop signal. If connections on GPS module are dirty, damaged or not connecting correctly will drop signal. As a test turn off all other devices in vehicle including other Cams, GPS, smartphones and power on A119 and drive in open areas such as parking lots or parks or low buildings. Since you are located in northern Canada the GPS sats are low to the horizon and will affect signal strength. This is also the same reason GPS doesn't work in underground parkades. Verify Menu has GPS on not required to display GPS Stamp but shows when reviewing clips for testing. Extreme test drive to small hill nearby, at the top face vehicle south with no obstructions power off A119 then back on after 10 seconds notice GPS lock delay.

    How to charge RTC internal battery. Because after some days i lost setting

    • @bchobbyist
      @bchobbyist  6 лет назад +1

      That tiny rechargeable RTC battery saves Menu Settings for 21 days after a full charge. For maximum battery life ensure the dashcam is used/powered for 5 to 8 hours for a full trickle charge. Some dashcams had old RTC batteries which never held their charge. Suggest powering the Dashcam with an iPad or other indoor 5 volt 1amp adapter over night (remove the memory card since its not needed) leave it powered on. If it loses Menu Settings after only 4 days the RealTimeClock battery must be replaced. Will create a new video on this issue soon. Verify Firmware isn't corrupted and all functions work normally otherwise update Firmware before RTC Testing.

      easy job, you'll need a cig-liter adapter (that truck will have one) buy one with 2amp on one USB port always connect to higher amp port, then find a long enough miniUSB to standard USB2 end for connection to cig-liter adapter. measure distance from dashcam up and around headliner around to cig-liter approx. 8-9 feet for pickup truck. could lookup parts online if needed let me know.

      Maybe I wasnt clear, my viofo only works with my cig-socket. I want it to come on when I turn the key on. I used an add-afuse and I get power at the GPS on the windshield, I have tried many different grounds...I have contacted "dashcamcentral" nobody knows how to help me...im at my wits end. I love this dashcam and I dont want to send it back but Ive fiddled with it for a week. All I want is for it to come on when I turn the key. I have watched all of your videos and you seem to be the most knowledgable person on this model dashcam. You"re my last chance...Thank you

      can solve any Chevy wiring issue, had same truck myself. troubleshooting required lets begin...
      most vehicle cig-accessory sockets are hot when ignition is on. if the cig-socket has power after turning off engine and removing key that has been modified for parking mode recording (emergency devices, air pumps, spotlites...) and will drain battery.
      1) using the supplied cig-liter USB power adapter with blue indicator, turn ignition 2 clicks for accessory power only, does blue lite on adapter glow? If it glows without the key goto #3.
      2) most cig-sockets have groves/channels running down sides and a right-angle lock at end used for twist-lock adapters. do not use those, instead insert the adapter so the blue lite indicator is up but slightly to passenger side. you should also push a dry rag into cig-socket to clean any rust or dust. I had to do this 4 times before a good power connection was made.
      3) all Chevy trucks use one of two circuits to supply power to acc-socket a) always powered b) ignition on power. if yours is always powered you'll need to change the hot wire from cig-socket to fusebox using a splitter fuse to another 3 to 10amp acc such as acc, radio (don't use cab-lite), look for open acc fuse, consult online fuse manual wiring diagram. its possible the cig-fuse isn't being used.
      4) connect heavy gauge ground wire from cig-socket side terminal to thick metal bracket screw under dash. (use original grounding screw)
      5) remove fuse (cig, acc, radio) connect the handy 'add-a-fuse'/splitter fuse reconnect original fuse into splitter fuse connect hot wire from cig-socket (bottom end) to crimp end. This is where you test different fuse circuits to find one that only supplies power when ignition is on. Must use circuit with enough amps else will overheat or not supply enough power to dashcam. Power preference order CIG fuse else ACC else RADIO.
      6) connect dashcam USB cable to cig adapter port closest to blue indicator light. never use cheap $3-$9 power adapters get a 5volt 2-3 Amp $12-$25 quality adapter with protection fuse.
      7) done

      Thanks for the detailed answer. The "Viofo" people should hire you. I ended up getting a 5volt/2amp adapter to hook to the add-a-fuse. It said it was for charging cell phones but it works great. Viofo really should explain the "key-on" option better. I'm happy now, thanks for all you do...guy

      good to hear your A119S dashcam now works with the new adapter. the market is flooded with dangerous poor quality cig-adapters, wiring it directly in some trucks and buying a higher quality 5volt adapter will always work. Test your configuration for audio hum and radio interference with short clips while driving with radio on/off. A few tricks can be done if further issues.
      I've not received a dime from VIOFO and still using the defective lens on my 3rd exchanged A119S while waiting 3 weeks for replacement parts. When I review any device I provide solutions when issues are detected. If you need the GPS Modification Tape to stabilize the dashcam let me know.

    How do I delete a protected file ..I don't even know how it was protected

    • @bchobbyist
      @bchobbyist  4 года назад +2

      Viofo Dashcam video clips created from Parking Mode or G-sensor events or Emergency button are protected/locked from overwrite looping as Read-Only files usually stored in RO folder. When deleting from Dashcam player menu these locked read-only clips must be un-protected/unlocked by pressing the center-triangle Emergency button before deleting the normal way. Quick solution to delete protected/locked clips is select Dashcam FORMAT Menu option to erase entire memory card, these locked files can also be deleted from computer.

    Purchased A119S in mid May 2017, by mid July 2017 working about two hours a day, the camera booted to VIOFO logo. Great suggestions to solve the problem, yet nothing worked, Contacted VIOFO - bunch of questions and suggestions, do this do that. Well now ship us the camera your cost $22.00 - $30.00, now the wait begins. Many users have this similar issue without a solution. DO NOT PURCHASE A119 AND A119S it will fail within two to three months. Better buy a more expensive reliable dash cam. I have no issues with the video quality, only the product which cannot sustain itself.

      As with any defective product, contact point of purchase then manufacturer for refund/exchange. If those routes demand 1/3 cost in shipping item for warranty it becomes a DIY Project. It would have helped to show photos of exterior and interior for other owners to suggest repair options. Some common causes of A119S failure: lens module ribbon cable not seated correctly, bad capacitors, flashing incorrect Firmware, not using side power connector during flash, rechargeable CMOS battery damaged, windows folders (eg. system volume information) on microSD card, damaged or incompatible microSD card (use Lexar), insufficient 5volt 2amp power.

    I bought two brand new Viofo 119s and nothing but troubles. So many issues with no real customer support. For me every software updates lasts 2-6 months and it fixes one issue and new issues arises. Now I am at version 2.4 one of my camera has 1/3 pix-elated screen and the other has a logo locked screen and both dash cams are non operational I am stuck with two useless dash-cams. They cost $110 - 120 when I bought them and I think it's unfair. This product should have never been released or sold. Don't buy this product if you want a dash-cam that is non functional every 2-6 months.

      Changing Firmware on any device can fail if done incorrectly. I created a detailed video to ensure the update is successful // ruclips.net/video/C6eG5mvyc0c/видео.html // Most LOGO-LOCK issues are solved by following the video exactly. In rare cases performing the tiny LOADER update is required to clear a failed Firmware update. NEVER use a Power Bank or Power from computer USB port during FW Update !! A119S is easily fixed.

      My experience with these has nothing to do with improperly installing Firmware although I agree improper installing Firmware can cause damage yet it's also the design in this product that cause those customers probably to do so. I believe improper installation is do to people having issues connecting their Dash cams to desktop and laptops and not having the Dash cam recognized, so to even proceed in proper update they have to buy a new computer or get the whole works? I know many people are having very similar issues. Don't know why sites are praising or rating this product so high but in fact there is much flaw in this product. My opinion is non bias I wanted to enjoys these for what they are and got burned towards the end.

    • @bchobbyist
      @bchobbyist  6 лет назад

      I agree VIOFO created this common failure. VIOFO's firmware update procedure introduces higher risk of failure by telling customer to connect Dashcam to computer USB port for firmware file transfer. The safest method for any BIOS update is always to copy firmware BIN file to removable media / microSD card then connect / insert into device and power on. This way the Dashcam stays in the vehicle connected to stable power source, insert card with Dashcam OFF then turn on ignition and wait 2 minutes for update.
