Whenever I hear the words "survival tool", I feel like its like a last resort thing made for small micro jobs, a way to protect yourself, and gathering food and essentials. Not a tool to enjoy or spending a long time in the woods. Like, what would you consider the best survival tool out there? None would come close to the quality of other tools meant to handle the grind of the woods. Excellent vid as always.
It's to keep from having an injury in such a survival situation. If the tool is badly made and you get hurt or disabled in some manner it'd make things worse in that moment.
The problem is the only time you would buy one of these is when preparing for a survival sitation it's not something you'd just randomly end up with in such a sitation and have to make do with. If you're going to put togeather a survival kit to it properly and sure it may way a bit more in the end but a lot of the time, assuming you didn't end up getting a "survival" toy anyway, it would be cheaper anyway.
If surviving means building a shelter, bedding and chopping firewood. This tool'd kill you faster than anything else. I'd I'd rather have a sharp rock.

Minor comment, when you were crossing the log you had the chest strap on your backpack still buckled. Always good to unbuckle before a crossing in case you need to ditch quickly. EDIT: oh man, I always try to balance a critique with a positive comment. I forgot. I love the real world test of this “tool”. Something that works at home (when you are safe) can fail when you really need it.
I expected as much. Gadget tools may work if nothing else is available, but seldom are useful if there is a serious job to be done. Thanks for sharing.
Alright sir, I've been watching your stuff for a looooong time. And this new direction of humor, this self effacing, not taking it overly serious tone is frankly, hilarious. It's quite endearing, I used to think you where a little too much serious especially of yourself. But ever since the "Professional Home Owner" persona has appeared, there certainly is a lighter tone. It's my opinion, a persona is an excellent mechanism to separate yourself a little from the private you. Not everything is for everyone always.
This is the kind of tool that "Looks like a good idea" in the store and was designed by an engineer who has never actually used an axe or bow saw. Cheers
That happens all too often. An engineer, or some computer jockey, makes a decision about a task without input from someone who makes living in said task. I mean no disrespect to engineers or computer jockeys. I don't want those jobs!
Just a thought. You do so many reviews on survival tools. You’re obviously well-versed in this subject. I think you should design one yourself. One that you think would cover all the cons. Have it made an America. I’d buy one for sure! So long as I knew you designed it.
That area is just so beautiful, so desolate and rugged, love it. Shame on Zippo indeed, I actually did vote for Zippo because I thought they would make something decent. But, boy was I wrong! Now onto that Nick's boots review video!
I’d love to see a wranglerstar version of all these “ultimate” survival tools. I think you would be more than able to do it. I’d like to see how you if it was your company’s own would you make it better and actually useable
"Professional homeowners like to pick chopping blocks next to precipices so that when they're splitting wood out falls down into the creek and drifts away." If I don't live close enough to a precipice, can I just split wood on the ridgepole of my house?
I think the combination of a 10 inch folding pruning saw and a Harbor Freight Hand Ax (like the one you reviewed) would be more compact, be lighter, cheaper, and much more user friendly.
when engineers that have never worked with the kind of tool have to design it the hollow haft makes for a storage space, it also makes it vibrate at every chop you save space in your kit with turning it into a saw, but the handle is unwieldy and you would have less discomfort taking a folding saw and a hatchet than taking this thing with you
I think we all remember when you make a spear you harden it in fire. I personally don't think testing it on fire harden wood is the best example. It's a survival axe not a everyday axe. Just my 2 cents.
@@wranglerstar hopefully the axe will exceed itself, and it'll be worthy for Justin from the Good of the Land to bling it up for you with the grinder! It's been a long minute since I've seen him do that with a axe
I remember being so excited when I first saw this tool, then decided to dig for reviews first. Sure enough, my very concerns about the design rang true. Supplementary: this is the fourth or fifth review i have seen of this tool and the conclusions are all quite similar.
I feel like they could have fixed every problem with the ax head AND given a better handle for the saw too. Give it a nice round base for the ax blade, then let the ax flare out from there. Having a wide handle would give it more strength, so it can have less depth so its easier to hold as a saw, and that extra width gives you more room to make a good taper for splitting and cutting.
The one thing I have always admired about Cody is how much effort he puts into his videos. Hiking up a volcanic wasteland to test a cheap axe is not something the toughest East Coast man would do.
@@Life-ob3cn okay, I’m still just confused as to why the “toughest east coast man” couldn’t do what he did 😂 this dude ain’t even that fit, and statistically, meaning per capita, the east coast has harder working men
I'm not sure whoever designed this ever actually used it. Conceptually it's a great idea. With a few tweaks to the handle and the head design and you got yourself a useful multi tool.
all been said. thanks. its def a no go. gets on my nerves how big rep brands all become slackers for bigger profit without improvements. support hardworking passionate small brands folks. respect \m/
Axe handles are VERY important.. For more than most people realize. Anyone who's seen an Amish man at the Store testing out 30 axle handles from a big box knows this... "look at handle, switch angle 12 times, look at each time, hold up to light, look down shaft of handle from 20 angles this time.. Make a bunch of different faces... Hit handle against shoe 15 different ways, feel the vibration, hold up to ear and listen to the sound, make even more faces, bounce off of floor, same as the shoe process, more faces, most resembling how you'd look at a child who disappointed you.... 3 minutes later, grab next axe handle and repeat the whole process. There could absolutely be an entire RUclips channel called "Amish guy examines axe handles" and it would be a huge hit. Lol and don't take this the wrong way, I'm not ripping on them, I love the Amish people around here and get along with them very well, have great respect for the way they choose to live, and the conviction of their religious beliefs in this ever more degenerate country.. But if you ever get the luck of being in a store, especially a place like a home depot, Lowes, menards... Somewhere they probably dont want to be, but needed an emergency axe handle. Relatively quick..just watch. Hell strike up a conversation... They're generally quite friendly and you'll definitely learn something.
I carry my Marbles carpenters axe and an old old KeenKutter small half hatchet. I never chop. I let fire cut for me. I do carry a saw blade and a 1 1/2" scotch eye drill bit. Of course I have my Kabar Mk II an my Victorinox officer Suisse pocket knife. I also have an excellent course tooth wire saw with loops, a ferro rod and a 2" magnifying glass,,,and a good sewing kit. I have always found a suitable rock to help tune up the cutting edges. This gentleman knows his duff. I'm pretty sure he has a decent ruck sack inventory too. ☆☆☆☆☆

Just a thought. You do so many reviews on survival tools. You’re obviously well-versed in this subject. I think you should design one yourself. One that you think would cover all the cons. Have it made an America. I’d buy one for sure! So long as I knew you designed it.
I've seen a few of your videos already but that jab at the East Coast guys did it. That earned my subscription, it ain't much, but it's all I have lol
An Alt-J fan?! Well, San Frandicso! That's awesome. Now, I can appreciate your woodsy wisdom AND your eclectic musical taste!
My hands were hurting just watching this.
what sort of creature are you because a woman most certainly isnt the answer
That area is just so beautiful, so desolate and rugged, love it. Shame on Zippo indeed, I actually did vote for Zippo because I thought they would make something decent. But, boy was I wrong! Now onto that Nick's boots review video!
I’d love to see a wranglerstar version of all these “ultimate” survival tools. I think you would be more than able to do it. I’d like to see how you if it was your company’s own would you make it better and actually useable
Cody you should take these survival tools into the shop and modify them. Make them usable. Could be a good series.
I never watched before great video thankyou never knew zippo made equipment like this I'm glad you made the video
"Short strokes back and forth, East Coast guys you'll know what I'm talking about" absolutely SAVAGE I love it
I caught that too.
Not first! I think we've learned over and over again....build your own survival pack, there's no one tool to rule them all.
"Professional homeowners like to pick chopping blocks next to precipices so that when they're splitting wood out falls down into the creek and drifts away." If I don't live close enough to a precipice, can I just split wood on the ridgepole of my house?
Please explain professional home owner. I can't wait.
I haven't watched ur videos in almost 3 month. Glad I'm back
Great opening sequence, Cody. Beautiful shots; hard work to capture. Thanks for the extra effort.
I think the combination of a 10 inch folding pruning saw and a Harbor Freight Hand Ax (like the one you reviewed) would be more compact, be lighter, cheaper, and much more user friendly.
Bahco folder saw
As expected, doesn't even come close to the legendary osis+ survival kit.
Nothing beats the gold standard
We agreed to never speak of the osis survival kit again, Bane. Never happened
when engineers that have never worked with the kind of tool have to design it
the hollow haft makes for a storage space, it also makes it vibrate at every chop
you save space in your kit with turning it into a saw, but the handle is unwieldy and you would have less discomfort taking a folding saw and a hatchet than taking this thing with you
I've seen those! I love Zippo brand, and I was curious about these. Great video!
GREAT review sir!!! These corporate junkies need to get a feel of their own sauce. God bless you man
I think we all remember when you make a spear you harden it in fire. I personally don't think testing it on fire harden wood is the best example. It's a survival axe not a everyday axe. Just my 2 cents.
Then why not buy a regular axe?
Well at least I was looking out for you, and voted for you to do the Harbor Freight axe! 😁
I'll do the HF hand axe next
@@wranglerstar hopefully the axe will exceed itself, and it'll be worthy for Justin from the Good of the Land to bling it up for you with the grinder! It's been a long minute since I've seen him do that with a axe
@@wranglerstar Honestly I was super excited for the HF axe, still am. Here's hoping it performs well
Liked before I even watched it, AMA.
don't sweat the haters and keep making the videos, you have a solid following already and it will keep growing. Love your videos!
I like his style , thats a commitment.
to set up a camera to get a specific shot , then go back and get it. its all about good footage....
I remember being so excited when I first saw this tool, then decided to dig for reviews first.
Sure enough, my very concerns about the design rang true.
Supplementary: this is the fourth or fifth review i have seen of this tool and the conclusions are all quite similar.
It's a shame because on the service it seems like a great idea.
East coast has a higher % of people that work physical work compared to the west coast 😂 also statically stronger
@@Souc._But the east coast has more people
@@Life-ob3cn okay, I’m still just confused as to why the “toughest east coast man” couldn’t do what he did 😂 this dude ain’t even that fit, and statistically, meaning per capita, the east coast has harder working men
@@Souc._ It's just a running joke on this channel lol
@@Life-ob3cn oh my bad 😂
Glad I watched before my daughter ordered for Father’s Day gift. 🙏
I'm not sure whoever designed this ever actually used it. Conceptually it's a great idea. With a few tweaks to the handle and the head design and you got yourself a useful multi tool.
Codys new ep "and cancer" will be out soon pre order now!
As an Midwestern I love the Brutality Honesty of this Man…..
"East coast guys know what I'm talking about"...ruthless
all been said. thanks. its def a no go. gets on my nerves how big rep brands all become slackers for bigger profit without improvements. support hardworking passionate small brands folks. respect \m/
I really enjoy these videos! You are one of the greats!
Glad you enjoy it!
Zippo fail, they forgot to incorperate the most valuable survival tool they are known best for.... the lighter!
That would have been a redeeming feature ... it's only redeeming feature, too
The entire hollow handle it could be a good size fuel reservoir. I think you’re onto something.
@@johncware66 Bic can do better I bet.
@@johncware66 they could have fit many things into the handle including a small LED light
East coast and tiny strokes huh? Looks like a few inches but it smells more like a foot!
I never considered buying that tool. Thanks for the review, stay safe out there.
Top notch videography!
Very exciting and informative video Mr Wranglerstar! Thank you!
Always enjoy your sense of humor and your wisdom, Cody 👍🏼😁👍🏼
I love your honesty my friend. Great video also.
LMAO @ 12:05 "Doing these little tiny strokes.....east coast guys, you'll know what I'm talking about".hahahaha
