Ideal Axe: - The center of mass is close to the head for maximal chopping action
Ideal Shovel: - The center of mass is far back so balancing dirt on the shovel is easier
Apart from that strange oversight truly baffeling compromises were made here - Like "Why can the head spin"
Adding a locking mechanism to stop the head from spinning and changing one of the "useless" pieces of handle into a heavy weight (so you can assemble it with the weight near the head for chopping or at the end for shoveling!) would solve those. Then just make the knife not suck and you might have something functional.
The camera mount on the shovel is so that you can get a steady film of you saying your goodbyes to your loved ones before you die in the wilderness from exposure.
I mean you "could" survive briefly with it as you can get a fire going, with enough time and patience and skill you could make stone tools with natural materials and build a shelter out of already downed wood and leaves and stuff blah blah blah BUT for all that tool offers you might as well just buy a box of matches from the dollar store and save your money for all the actual survival use it provides, if anything its negative is survival use as its a hazard to try to use it

@@dmd8552 $10 Fiberglass short- Handle Harbor Freight shovel. Drill out the rivet and replace it with a carriage bolt + wing nut for easier backpacking. And sharpen one side.

Yes, for $250 if your aware of cheap high quality items. Such as bahco laplander saw and a Mora knife. Throw in the Estwing Camper's Axe. Your well under $100 and your base kit is probably a solid B-.

Wrong!!!!! It’s designed small because they factored in weight of other items you’ll carry. The guy in this video wants a Luxury Survival Tool. one that requires absolutely no effort to use. He doesn’t want to sweat becuase no one sweats when they are in survival mode.
the truth is , he didn’t want to put to much wear and tear aka NOT REALLY DO A TEST OR REVIEW, So he can return it.

Using that shovel as an axe looks about as effective as I would expect using a normal shovel as an axe would be.

One of the funniest parts about this "tool":
Even IF it was able to chop that tree down at all, the first time it gets used as a shovel, you're destroying the cutting edge by dragging it through the dirt!
The funny thing is your axe should not even be razor sharp. The geometry of it is what matters most. Which is what this video shows
@@zerdodylan yeah an axe needs some heft and good geometry, doesn't need to be razor sharp. Can't really have an axe/shovel combo it's gonna suck at one of those 2 things, if not both
@@chimchu3232 You would have to make it so that the tool has separate heads that can be swapped. Ie, a removable axe head and a removable shovel head. Adjustable handle, etc.
The problem then is that you’d have to make sure that said handle can handle punishment and the heads are secured properly.
If you can unscrew a head/handle, it’s probably not as stable or durable.

What is surprising are the good reviews on Amazon. But still, we all witnessed the poor efficiency of this "tool", and its terrific price as well.
I doubt any of the people leaving good reviews actually used this or if they have they have not used regular tools to notice how crappy it is.

Honestly, probably wouldn't cost that much. Even a cheap hatchet about the same size as that shovel head and sharpened well wouldn't be bad.
Well, lest think about it for a sec, the bag may be a bit bigger, but a half way decent hatchet, $35-50, a good cheap knife $40.00, military shovel/ ? -$50, flint and steel or fire starter kit $20.00, add in another $20 for compass, and waterproof matches, so carefully shopping, you can improvise a pretty good kit.... but

well, besides it being lightweight, there is really no point to buying something like this, you can buy a mora basic, a cold steel shovel and axe, a big ferro rod, a decent folding saw and you would spend a little over $100, this thing cost 250 and a good well designed version made out of lets say titanium and 1095- or O1 still would cost about $500 or more
Literally buy a mattock and then a saw and firestarter.

The daft thing is that someone has clearly spent time thinking about the design, and effort has also clearly gone into engineering it. Yet it's almost completely unsuited for its intended purpose! It's kinda like a student who's genuinely put a lot of work and effort into something, but who still can only be awarded an F because they've not actually understood the problem they were set.

It's trying to do too much. A long tool like a shovel, ax, or hoe should never have threaded pieces. I mean think about it, an adz would make a better ax and shovel than that.
It's feature-itis. Does *your* shovel have a knife built into the handle? Mine does! ("Well, should it, though?")
The best survival tool is the custom-built Victorinox that I put together myself. It has all the tools I actually use, and only one that I don't use (that freaking awl that I only keep because it fills an empty hole).
Do yourself a favor and use that cellphone to take a photo of every dead tree you cut down, so you have evidence it was dead _before_ you started chopping. That will save you some trouble if a treehugger and a park ranger decide to join forces. It doesn't even matter that nobody in their right mind would chop down a _live_ tree for firewood -- logic is not a concern for treehuggers.
