i wonder what your survival axe design would look like...
the main problem with those survival cards seems to be either the lack of proper weight or the saw failing to properly build a handle in the first place...

I had a friend that was an artist and he loved to paint very abstract paintings,,, No one would buy them... He wondered why? so he asked me what I thought? I told him that its important to do things in life you love to do, yet one needs to eat and that costs money,, so maybe he should paint what people would be willing to buy..... So he started painting artwork that appealed to the mass.... he was successful in this financially as people enjoyed his art in that fashion. I see that your numbers of viewers increase when you have videos that interest the Mass... I can see you have figured that out tho...

I don't think the wallet axe stuck in the tree or the target was one thing that is oftentimes not thought of is that in order for a axe to stick into a item it also needs to be well balanced to work properly @Wranglerstar

I got one of these as a gift from a well meaning friend. filed set into the saw and hardened the cutting edge. Also put an edge on the broad head. It’s still not a go to tool but for something to always have in your wallet it’s not bad for 20 bucks.

Cody, there is 1 small tool I take into the wild eveytime that is an absolute life saver and that is a Leatherman tool with a saw. I have used this extensively and while it doesnt fit in your wallet it is very small and has multiple life saving tools in 1 package. Of course I also have my GB small forest axe with me as well and that combination makes survival much more manageable. Love the video brother! God bless you and your family! Keep up the great work!

Hey, thanks for this video. I thought this one was perhaps a little more useful than the klax as the zip ties seemed more secure than the twist lock mechanism on the klax. But, apparently not by much. And, I didn't even think about the lack of weight in it being a pretty big usability issue for a hatchet. Even one of the heavier "micro axes" seen like a much better packable option than any of these novelties. Thanks again.

Is there any chance you use one? If so, which one?

  • @hmpeter

Sure it cuts a 3" tree. On the other hand, even the small Victorinox wood saws you get on walker, camper models etc. will do that too. Faster, with less effort and without additional tools like a handle or fastening. Some things are easier with chopping tools. Best to have them all. ^^ If I had to choose one, I'd much rather go with the pocket knife though. Still an interesting option, thanks for showing it! :-)

  • @Warpfield

Consider, if that was your only tool in a survival situation, (i.e. no knife or saw), you could use the axe blade to split the end of the stick just deep enough to contain the head. Then use your paracord, because we all carry that stuff, to bind it tightly to the stick.

For a $20, never-left-behind-'cause-you-forgot-you-have-it-in-your-wallet-backup, I think it did pretty well. For one thing, I don't tend to carry cable ties ... but I do tend to carry wire. Lashing the axe and spearpoint to the handle with wire, especially if you sniped it snug, would have been at least as strong, and would have added weight to the working end. Likely would have made it a bit more effective. I have to agree with you about the "saw" they usually include on these sort of things, though ... of course, with a bit of time, a good vise and a decent set of files, that usually isn't that hard to fix.

I know Survco advertises that you use zip ties, but I look at other reviews, and they use 550 paracord. I tried this out myself and the axe head had a MUCH better grip on the handle. I’d say this would be in my edc, alongside my knife, glock, lettermen and fishing hook punch out cards just because the fact that you can cut down a 4 inch tree and it fits in your wallet. I’d also put about a 2 feet of cordage and maybe a couple of zip ties.

You should test a classic half hatchet, if you don't already have one laying around the Vaughan & Bushnell is only $20 new.
Radius the straight edge before sharpening, and you've got one helluva utilitarian hatchet.
The nice thin bit profile like you favor from GB, an actual hardened hammer poll, and that nail notch that's good for all kinds of things.

  • @stringsofair8039

I understand the point and intention of tools like this. Still, anyone intending to use an axe in the backwoods would be well served by taking a 36" Fiskars X27 with them, it's a reasonably light axe with the option for shorter handled versions with the same head. You can save a TON of energy by falling a tree or processing a downed tree with a 'light' & full sized axe compared to a micro axe/ tool. One real advantage is that it's readily available for in store pickup across the US.
At minimum a Fiskars X7 Hatchet should be packed since it is very handy, even with it's limited uses due to it's light head and short handle.
Plastic fantastic stuff, sure, and it's not unbreakable but I seriously doubt it would be an issue. I've been using a few different ones to clear overgrowth and for removing stumps, with the worst wear being a slightly chipped cutting edge (expected, due to hitting unseen rocks with some force)
