  • If you're like me you can never remember which way you need to rotate your focus ring when you're pulling manual focus. Well, after years of doing it WRONG, I finally got a solution. It was an obvious one and was right there all along, but I never saw anyone talk about it.
If you have a follow focus ring it probably came with a little white disk. That disk is going to be your new best friend. I'm goign to teach you how to mark it up properly so that you can see where your current focus point is, and then where it needs to go.
The set up is super simple. You'll want to first set up hard stops on the follow focus according to where your close focus and infinity focus is on your lens. Your lens doesn't actually need hard stops here. If your lens doesn't have physical markings you can also use a digital focus scale if your camera has one, and it should.
The next step is to simply rotate your focus ring and write down each marking on your follow focus. This won't be 100% accurate but it will get you very close. Once you've got them all marked you'll be able to see what distance your lens is currently focusing on and you can see what it will focus on next depending on how you turn it.
I have found this incredibly helpful and I can't believe it took me so long. Once you can see it marked you should be able to develop the muscle memory so it can just be second nature .
