I am laughing at Tip #7. I'm 73, and remember when I was a young single mother raising 2 children, around the ages of 8 to 14, I was tired of yelling in the mornings to get going for work and school. So one day, I decided to stand at the stairs and talk in my "normal" voice; let's go, the bus is almost here or something like that. They were shocked that I wasn't yelling, and at first, they screamed down, Mom, I can't hear you. I told them no more yelling, and they soon got used to Mom not yelling every morning. This continued for a very long time.

I was on an overseas tour trip one time and things were going a little bit crazy. One of the other women in the group had traveled a lot with her family and her dad had a saying "The crazier it is now, the harder you laugh later." I was reminded of that when you mentioned having a sense of humor when things go wrong and your own dad having a sense of humor.

"Dawn" from the Pride and Prejudice movie soundtrack is the tune I swear by for waking up gently. Starts with a single piano note and builds up over 2mins time so you'll definitely wake up despite the soft beginning that starts drawing you out of your sleep state. It's delightful 🩷🎶

Getting up at least 30 minutes to an hour before the kids is so helpful. I can get some fresh air, coffee, and time with the Lord before they're up. Now I'm more awake and ready for what the day brings. That said, it also means going to bed at an appropriate time so you can get up earlier.

My children would make their own lunches for school the night before. They also chose the clothes they would wear to school and had them ready the night before, this gives them a sense of accomplishment and individually. Their school books were stacked in their room on a nightstand, ready to go in the morning. If you have a foyer or mudroom, some people can set that up for jackets, backpacks etc... While in grade school, I also taught me daughter to fry eggs, or make pancakes, which she did most mornings for her and her younger sister. Their alarm was set for school mornings, or at times, it was me waking them, which I did not mind. Our mornings, for the most part, were smooth. Teaching your children to plan the night before is crucial for a successful, smooth morning. So it begins with mom. or dad.

Creepy doll voice 😂. Love it! A few years ago I started singing "go-to the car" or "put on your shoes" to the tune of Raffi's Down by the Bay. Just that one line (request) over and over. It's very effective (especially if I sing in a screechy voice 😂) and the kids think it's funny but also want it to stop (similar to your kids wanting the creepy voice to stop). It's way better than losing my cool. Works for high school and middle school too.😂

  • @brandistillart

Oh! My children call it “the whisper yell.”😂
All of them are grown now, save one, and the three that are parents to my beautiful grands have all adopted the same “whisper yell” approach facing the apex of an explosive moment. We laugh, but TRULY, a good whisper yell in a creepy doll voice extinguishes an otherwise chaotic outburst of frustration from everyone involved. Being loud escalates a situation. Being quiet deflates the same and forces everyone to listen more attentively.
    Pro Mom move!💪🏼
Such great tips as always! I especially enjoy practicing the last. Having some life behind me, the simple act of being still has truly built much faith in me. If we’re still, we can watch and see what He’s doing in our situations on our behalf or for our loved ones. My name, B. Still, is a constant reminder to do just that.

Hi Jennifer! I love that quote. I'm a recently retired teacher and I 'm sorry to say we had a principal who micromanaged the teachers, along with having an authoritarian leadership style. Very Type A! We had quite an exodus at our school of wonderful veteran teachers after this principal had been there a while. :( I remember at all the faculty meetings, she would always tell us we needed to have a "sense of urgency" with teaching our students and bringing them up to standards/ testing. Every time she said that, I could see this lead to stress and burnout with outstanding teachers. So....when I hear this term, I understand how it is perceived as negative. Now, I'm retired and have no sense of urgency as I am enjoying life so much!

I love this! I'm naturally a very calm person. It started in more of a place of not wanting to assert myself, but being a parent it is very very important to assert myself. I totally relate to the creepy doll voice! Seeing others get loud and angry, I knew that just wasn't me. I've learned to be firm, to state boundaries clearly, but to remain my true dignified self. Sure, I've blown up a few times, but my kids know that if I'm actually displaying anger in that way, than they have seriously crossed a line! Honestly I can't even remember the last time that's happened, since I've learned to be assertive in my own way, and my kids are teenagers.

We had 9 children. I'm in awe of that woman. That was so many years ago. This such great advice for families. I felt the pressure come off when you said 30% of mornings would not go as planned. That lets you be like water or laugh it off, or use your scary doll voice. LOL This reminded me of one of our ideas. When we went out for the evening... on our return, we didn't want to start yelling and noticing what wasn't right. Our plan was to blend. Whatever they were doing we joined in. It so worked. We were grateful the house was still there and everyone was in one piece.

Thank you Jennifer, wonderful video. The alarm discussion reminded me of the book that you recommended a while back, which was one of my favorite. "The Jane Austen Diet Book by Bryan Kozlowski". I changed my alarm because of it. "In Austin world, Jane would have awoken to birdsong. The return of day and cheerfulness of morning. Waking up to bird sounds (either real or recorded) has been shown to boost mood and reduce fatigue. Alarm sound beeps jolt your system elevating blood pressure and stress levels before getting out of bed."
(I downloaded a birdsong alarm for my phone. It is amazing and so gentle. I keep the phone far away from bed)
Also, another tip In Austin world is they would open the shutters and get outside which tells our brain to stop producing melatonin. (I try to just look outside my window first until I can physically get outside)

Don’t be so hard on yourself. Being a parent to toddlers is hard work and if you want to lay in bed longer, I think that is productive self care time. You’ll have plenty of time later on to wake up and do things. The only discipline needed is to enjoy your time in bed in a guilt-free manner. ❤

Don't be discouraged by this video mama. JLS is out of baby phase and people forget almost immediately that many people are not, and just how hard it is to have any peace when that is where you're at. Sleep is more precious in your phase of life than to get up early and do a stretch routine. I have a 1, 4, 5 and 8 year old. The 4 and 1 year olds are up between 5 and 6 every morning. I am Catholic and open to life, so I can't just "wait out the baby phase." If you drink coffee, set the pot the night before. If there is a morning chore that stinks to wake up to (for me it's the dishes) try to handle it the night before. We really try to "reset" the kitchen and living room the night before after kids go to bed, which is early, so that we have time to unwind at night too. My husband and I have staged sippy cups in the refrigerator and morning snacks/breakfast too. I make breakfast bars and homemade bread for the week so that there isn't breakfast cooking chaos every day. Sometimes my husband and I take turns for who gets up first to handle the kids' needs. We DO put the TV on for them for a little while, a very gentle show like the old Little Bear cartoon, so that WE the ADULTS have time to ease into the day more. Even stealing an extra half hour helps. We homeschool and I am a SAHM so there is no rush to get to school, which I highly recommend if a family can do it. Homeschooling makes life so much gentler, and natural, when your kids get older. I will say a prayer for you right after I click that "reply" button.

Creepy doll voice, that's so funny! This was good Jennifer, doing things the night before and not having a sense of urgency really resonated with me. Having a laugh, I needed that one.

This was so good! I loved seeing your little boys, and you having fun with them. The creepy doll voice made me laugh! I just ordered a rebounder; I can't wait to try it out! I had been thinking of getting one, and then my doctor recommended me using one because I have Osteopenia, (the precursor to Osteoporosis!) Weight bearing exercise is good to strengthen our bones. Thanks!

I totally get the sense of urgency and I can't stand it so thank you for the reminder NOT to do it. Also, can you do a video on rebounding - what is your routine and what benefits have you experienced b/c I hear so much about this and the NASA usage of rebounding for astronauts.

The Romans had a saying: festina lente which means ‘hurry up slowly.’ To me this means that when we are hurrying I go into a methodical mode. List what needs to be done and then check off in brisk, efficient manner.
