  • A beautiful way to spend a morning… with the elephants in their wilderness homestead and Khanyisa as she starts her day beside Limpopo and the other elephants and with milk bottles provided by her dear carers, Reply and Stavros! She gets a sneaky marula too and of course her extra supplement of snacks for the day ahead: sweet potatoes, apples and pellets. All for a growing baby elephant of over 840 kilograms!

What a gorgeous atmosphere with this stunning sunrise and the wilderness ahead. The light in the mornings and evenings are simply marvelous. Khanyisa has grown in such a self content young girl, she makes me smile. With all this beauty in nature, all these stunning animals around, one becomes very awestruck and humble. Thank you for letting us be part of it again and again.

South Africa’s beautiful colors are so bright & vivid, but it isn’t until you get to the homestead that you see a certain color that I never knew I would grow to love. Grey, & the Elephants wear this color in all their glory! Throw in a little pink & you have one cute little Elephant that is growing up right before our eyes. Can not imagine a world without color. ❤

I have watched Kyhanisa since the day she was rescued. I am so happy to see how she is thriving. My prayer is that I would love to come to South Africa t visit the Herd in person. Adine you are such a wonderful person! Along with the commitment of all the carriers have given your herd a wonderful home. Ever since Kyhanisa’s rescue I have learned so much about how wonderful elephants are. Kyhanisa… I love her so much and the bond she has with you. With all that is currently happening here in the US is very discouraging for me because at 74 I don’t know if there is enough time left for me to get my prayer answered to see all these Ellie’s in person. I watch them everyday. They give me such peace. My husband has dementia and I am his caregiver. We’ve been married over 32 years. So when I watch when the herd goes out in the bush I take in the scenery and the solitude & peace they experience. I want to be there to feel the ultimate .humbling to be in there presence. What therapy I am experiencing because of Kyhanisa being rescued. Unfortunately I cannot afford to contribute to herd at this point in time, but my prayers and Love are with the entire family each and every day. I hope I live long enough to see Kyhanisa have a baby of her own. I know that is a ways off but I wish her all the happiness our Pink princess can have. What an experience all this has been for me.

Comparing South Africa's landscape with the landscape I have lived in here in Seattle, Washington, all of my life is like comparing night and day.
I have always seen the ocean to the west and the Cascade mountsin range to the east.
Plus we have two very large lakes very near our home.
Everywhere you drive, you will encounter hills.
    It's always raining or windy.
We get 60 days in the summer.
People cry about A/C all the time in our summer because they're used to it being 45 degrees.
South Africa seems to be endless plains of grass with very short trees and schrubs sparsely growing here and there.
There are way more herbivorious animals living there than where I live, so it must be a good place for grass eating species.
If it can support the diet of elephant herds, it has to be good.

      @herdelephantorphanage
      Think about it.
Where else in the world could an elephant diet be supported?
They have evolved to rely on the vegetation that grows in specific regions on the African continent.
They have also evolved to rely on the climate of those specific regions.
They couldn't survive the cold seasonal climate of North america.
There might be regions in Central and South america.
But they seem to thrive near the great plains in southern and central Africa.
Certain species occur in certain regions during this particular time in geologic history because it supports their diet and physiological needs unless they're given the time to adapt with an evolved response.

Khanyisa so loves her bottles! But I notice that either she has finally learned no one will take them away until she is done, which I think she has known since her early days before she could even hold her own bottle, or she is getting old enough that she is eating enough during the night and early morning that she is not desperately hungry each morning as a baby would be still depending on milk as a primary food source. While she still needs her milk, she is seeming to slow down a bit and savor it more then even a couple weeks ago when she was still suckling as if it was never going to come fast enough. Are we starting to see early signs that milk may no longer be as important as good foraging, the techniques of which her family members are teaching her well, and that weaning is perhaps somewherein the future? As sweet a little elephant as she is, she really not only loves her bottles but the attention that goes with them from careers and human family, and it will be interesting to see her behavior when some bottles start to not be served or less then the amount she is used to is presented as weaning does start. I wonder if we will see some temper tantrums

How is Nangu? Is Mambo and Lundi in the same stall again?
The beauty, the sweeping land and sky , the openness of Africa is amazing and breathtaking. Adine your heart must swell each time you drive up to your beloved reserve. It is incredible to me that you own this reserve. How you must love it.
