  • Drove up to Northern California to give Shasta a go! They had just received a few feet of snow which ended up filling in the route. We woke up at the trailhead at 3:30am and got a move on. Travel was fast and easy until we got up to the Helen Lake camp. The visibility was terrible so we decided to hang out for a bit for it to clear out. After about a half hour the visibility was great but the winds started kicking in. 30mph winds with gusts up to 60mph or so would catch us off guard and knock us on our butts. The booting up to the summit ridge was slow. Up on the summit ridge we were dealing with consistent wind speeds of 60-90mph which got really old. Lost a crampon on the way down off the summit. We skied from the Red Banks cliffs and got a little bit of everything from hard chalky snow to corn to thick, and heavy mashed potatoes. All in all it was about 13 miles and 9k elevation gain. It took us about 13 hours.
