  • The original, 1960s Ford Bronco is a true automotive icon. Tidy, simple, and immensely rugged. And while Ford claims that the all-new Bronco is its direct descendent, times have changed. Yet, like the original, its mission is clear: give Jeep’s Wrangler some serious competition. So, let’s find out how well this 2021 Bronco infuses its heritage with the demands of today.

I have a family member that used to work at Ford in the early 90s. Under hood appearance was important back then. They had a team that would try to package hoses and wiring in a way that would look nice. Clearly 3:11 they fired that team and gave up on that.

I think in this case, it looks like most wiring and hoses were moved to the top (accessable) possition. No beauty covers here. Remember, for the true rubicon, moab, etc. off roader, these vehicles with be very deep in water, mud, debris, and if something goes amiss, it's easier to diagnose from the top than crawling under the vehicle. Bronco was designed for the top tier off roader.

MW seems a little less bullish on the Bronco than CR or C&D. But as a Wrangler owner for nearly 20 years I'll admit this is serious competition for my beloved Wrangler. The biggest difference for me is safety. All the modern safety features are standard on the Bronco and add-ons with the Wranglers (some like curtain airbags are still inexplicably unavailable). The next time I unload my wallet it may be in a Ford dealership.

@@georgetown8986 the appearance of the new Defender has grown on me, but the Defender was a truck. The Range Rover used to be a truck also. I wouldn't trust either enough to want one. @@mfnd502 I certainly agree with you.
A 2 door Defender is sharp with the right wheels and color.
The original Defender was a slick vehicle. And still is.
I have had 3 Range Rover Sports.
One I bought 2 years old with about 18k miles.
And I leased the last two Range Rover Sports (Supercharged).
All 3 of them were absolutely horrible vehicles plagued with rattles and nightmarish mechanical gremlins.
And this was from brand new.
I would never own one again and especially out of warranty.
Plus they depreciate like an absolute rock.
