Excellent Podcast, love listening to Wenning explain strength training, I think Louie would be proud of how well Mark Bell, Matt Wenning and Dave Tate have done especially for making his training methods better known.
Guys like Matt Wenning and Zach Even-Esh are so underrated. He’s right. People want what’s sexy but these types of dudes are a cesspool for killer information.
This was the best show for me! Matt has so much great info…. And of course Mark and Nsima have great questions were info was covered! Thank you Andrew! This podcast was great! Matt is great!
This kind of content is when this channel is at it's best imo. Started as a powerlifting channel, so it's always great to have 100% powerlifting talk again.
This podcast is so full of amazing information. Just what Wenning says about specificity of weakness vs specificity of the event is worth an entire seminar. Thanks so much, guys.
I like Matt’s approach and obviously he’s a strong and smart guy. Some people seem to think he is stingy for monetizing some of his information. It’s an interesting conundrum, would you expect any other professional to give out free work or labor? I think people are so used to getting free information from the internet that they can’t see the value in paying for premium information.
@49:52 I didnt bench for about 4 weeks came back just because i had the urge to and PR'd at 350 for a single. now im only benching once maybe twice a week and hitting 280 for 5 consistently. although not the strongest it shows just how much rest does for you.
Wenning has tons of good nuggets...but he seems to be a little close minded to other methodologies...I love how open to multiple methods and theories Mark and his crew are...this is my favorite podcast and Mark and his team have been making my life better for a while now...keep doing what you guys do!
Wennings the GOAT. 1 thing i wamt to say from experience though, at least for me. When starting to add Wenning Warmups, i wouldn't jump straight to 3 exercises and 4 sets of 25....I'd start with 1-2 exercises and 2 sets of 10-15. Build up to 4 x 25. Hope this helps some of you little more weathered lifters 😅.
Just returned to this podcast and re watched it over a couple days. By far the best content I've ever listened to. Wenning is insanely on point when it comes to strength training.
This was a great one I had to come back and edit my comment. This was phenomenal. This mirrors how I used to go about training pre 2017. Alot of trial and error. A lot of attention to the detail of my body. Rotating workouts. I think after 2017 I let IG get me Insecure because I felt like I needed to be an influencer and I should be able to package what I know to others. So I stopped really learning about myself and more about "best practice". I appreciate this affirmation of how I should have been training all along.
Lol Matt mentions Ben Patrick's leg size and Mark bell and Nsima are "ohhhhhh...oh..oh." I do agree a variety and working on what you suck at does help balance you up. For Ben Patricks workouts i think the end game is preventing those common injuries with the waist below commonly deal with, especially with the knees. Adding his type of workouts for me at least have been helping my knee pain, also the key word is adding.
I’m 1 hour in on the podcast app and this is one of the best podcasts I’ve ever listened too so I had to hop on RUclips and commet. Great job guys god damn god damn 🙏
I'm really digging the title because I went this route about 2 years ago changing my goals from strength only to strength, resilience, and longevity. I have strength days I have power days I have technique days and I have rotational days because rotational work is important
i was going to say, ben never advocated KOT for powerlifters or strongmen as a primary means to have them break world records. he advocates his system for people needing to recover, and athletes who are moving QUICKLY through space unloaded, often jumping and landing great distances. further, ben is focused on tendons and other neglected muscles that do not get trained from dogmatic adherence to a particular squat or deadlift, or bench, etc etc. i don't know what he puts on IG, but he has been preaching about the importance of TENDONS for ATHLETES for years, and matt levied his critique from, honestly, a point of ignorance. if he sat down and watched his videos (there are many, but they are not long at all) he would actually agree and likely support ben (and derek williams) with their approach to athleticism. lastly, matt talks about having ben do a bunch of squats. i'd love to see matt do a bunch of dunks, layups, or even jump shots during a game of basketball vs derek or ben. all these men are outstanding in their field, and both ben and matt have extremely valuable information to share with the world. one isn't better than the other. "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid."
I’ve learned a lot from been per the weighted mobility, and Matt per developing strength, safely and intelligently. There is so much gold in this podcast….
I wonder what the cross over is from reading what experts write down to listening to, let's say, this podcast? Is it close to the same? Ive learned so much over the last few years of lifting from listening daily to podcasts about it.
Great and critical info in this episode. This guy knows a great deal and I appreciate his philosophy on longevity. For a long time I stopped lifting because I couldn't do the main lifts without pain or long recovery times, and so I just got lazy and didn't work out and deconditioned even worst and worst. Of course I knew what I needed to do but I was so focused on including the 3 main lifts. Today I dont bother with the Barbel Squat any more and doing movements to correct the knee pain, or hip shift and etc. I had a severe tilt to the left when benching too, now I'm just DB pressing, occasionally I hit flat bench just for technique and that tilt is gone now. My current program is just major rehab basically and I'm excited to when I can do the major lifts correctly again.
I think for me on squat warmups, when I move 315 really fast it sometimes means I’m not getting tight enough. Sometimes 315 feels a little slow but I’m so locked in that when I go up to 365 and 405 they feel the same. If 315 flies the slowdown happens at 365 and can get in my head a little.
I just now listened to this podcast. Loved it! I've been following westside and Matt for years and I'm glad supertraining had him on. Also, can anyone put up a Instagram link of this episode on here. I would appreciate it
Brother, im glad I came across your channel and this video. it me me realize I REALLY do need to talk to someone. I should not be crying at this video like im having a "breakthrough" in some kind of therapy. im glad I am but this shows me I truly need a level headed person to help guide me through the process of building myself from scratch again. I need some real hope that I can change and that I can change the way I see people and the world cus right now. its Admittedly a terrifying and deeply depressing place.
I just recently got into the Westside style of training. They came up with this comprehensive system of strength training, and it really is being forgotten by current day lifters. I think the time commitment and complexity of the training overwhelms most ppl. But those crazy mf'ers in Ohio figured it out...thanks also to the Russians, Bulgarians, amd Chinese of course lol
2:37:37 I think it is bc a squat is driving through the heel, not off heel like cutting/running. firefighter would probably land forefoot rather than heel imo
Great info. He mentioned how a football player went from a 500lb to a 700lb squat. I wonder how much Ben Patricks deadlift would increase if he were to focus on deadlifts, coming from his KOT style training. Which I believe is better for athletes.

The late Earnie Shavers is considered to be the hardest puncher of all time and he said he got his punches so hard from chopping wood all day. I wonder if he would try to hold the axe differently or something, or was it always the same, or if it was just something that really only worked for him. So much we know but so much we don't know at the same time.
Been using wenning warm ups for 3 years now and I can easily use 40lb DBs for 4x25 without it affecting my bench yet I only bench 300. Does that mean I just never go beyond 40s even if I'm really well conditioned and could easily use more?
I wonder if Mr Wenning’s dense lumbar spine still has the ability to flex and extend properly??? I would guess not, but I could be wrong…would love to see him move. help me out guys, when he suggests training at roughly 75 capacity, is he suggesting trimming reps or weight? hypothetically : if my max capacity is 100lb for 10 reps, should i trim back to 75 lb for 10 reps or 100 lb for 7-8 reps. thanks

I dont think this dude understands what Ben Patrick has accomplished with both of his knees and what he's trying to help people with. Not to discredit this dude and his accomplishments but he's stepping into some territory he doesn't know. Normal average genetic people coming off a knee injuries cant pick up weights and start squating. I was one of those people and it literally made everything worse. Basically any fast twitch sport where you need to be explosive and precise this dude doesn't understand fully. Ben is a basketball player not a powerlifter lol. No need to have enormous legs that would slow him down on the court lmao. Great podcasts but no reason to be a bit of a hater g. Stay in your lane and respect what this dude has done for so many top teir and normal athletes. Keep doing you though. Love the pod!
Agreed. More importantly; who cares about squatting unless you’re competing in it 🤷🏻♂️ squat is just a tool and it’s not even close to the best one for most athletes most of the time. Time and a place. Personally, I’m a huge fan of squatting - many kinds, but I don’t give a single fuck about my low bar half squat. When I could do 435 I was stiff, slow and creaky. 14 years later, at 35, now I can dunk a softball, beat most of my track kids in the 40yd dash and play any rec sport all day if I want. I don’t have to warm-up or anything! I’m so thankful to Ben Patrick for all his information. I am NOT so thankful to powerlifting coaches for convincing me to go heavy on the “big three” at the behest of everything else.
Thanks for watching guys.

I am NOT so thankful to powerlifting coaches for convincing me to go heavy on the “big three” at the behest of everything else.
polquin is my hero i know him and matt where tight friends id love to train with matt
