  • Several years ago I talked about wanting to put together a video where I talked about myths, folklore, and gods that I'd love to see incorporated into the Megami Tensei franchise one day. Today, I'm looking at 10 figures that I think would make amazing demons in an upcoming SMT, Devil Summoner, or any other MegaTen game.
    0:00 Intro
    1:03 Hachishakusama
    1:58 Cinnamologus
    3:11 Bhramari
    4:05 Steamboat Willie
    5:06 Boto Encantado
    6:14 Roguszys
    6:52 Crepitus
    7:52 The Squonk
    8:56 Yara-ma-yha-who
    10:05 Menehune
    10:50 Outro
I've still got tons of figures I could look at in the future, so please let me know if you'd like to see more videos like this and leave your suggestions for figures in the comments below!

Some figures I'd love to see as demons:
    - Benandanti, a "holy werewolf" from an agrarian visionary tradition in Northeastern Italy mostly heard of during the Witch Hunts. These people claimed to become werewolves in their sleep and fight evil witches.
    - Sol Invictus, the Unconquered Sun, sun god of Aurelian, chief god of the Roman Empire. How is he not a demon yet, he is absolutely awesome.
    - Vidarr, god of vengeance, Odin's son from Norse mythology who's prophesied to leap into Fenrir's mouth and kill him during Ragnarok.
    - Goliath, colossal Philistine warrior who challenged the Israelites to single combat, killed by David when he threw a sling-stone at his head.
    - the Nightmarchers, soldier spirits from Hawai'i who rise from their graves and march throughout the night. It's said that you must never look at them directly, or else you will die horribly.
    - Eostre, Germanic goddess of Spring and dawn, and namesake of Easter.

Personally, I would really like to see the Tiyanak from my home country of the Philippines. The Tiyanak is a monster that disguises itself as an abandoned human baby and will cry to attract victims. Once they reach the Tiyanak it sheds it's disguise and mauls the poor unsuspecting person that went approached it. I've also heard versions where Tiyanaks are still-born/aborted fetuses who have come back from the dead and are out for vengeance. These little dudes terrified as a kid. Specifically there was one movie where a woman had a Tiyanak in a plane, the cgi on it unsettled me so much as a kid that Is till viscerally remember it to this day, nothing else from the movie just that one scene. Now I want to see it in SMT lol.
Now it's a pipe dream, but they could also make the Mantiyanak into a demon and give it a special conversation with the Tiyanak where the Mantiyanak promises to take care of the baby and it could end sweetly where both of them are happy or it could be a comedy where the Tiyanak reveals it's not actually a baby it jsut diguises itself as one and the Mantiyanak scolds it. The Mantiyanak is the vengeful spirit of a woman who dies in child-birth btw.

      @frankwest5388 4 месяца назад +3

Same but if they do Camelot, maybe they can be a bit more creative rather than just making them random dudes.

    • @succubastard1019
      @succubastard1019 4 месяца назад

@@frankwest5388 Pendragon is already a demon actually, unless you are citing that as an example of what to do with other demon adaptations.
Personally i'd just add one or two knights and stop it at that. Besides personally I think Charlemagne and some of his Paladins would be better picks due to closer ties to Christianity and demonology, which Megaten seems to like a lot.
Morgan le Fae however has more than enough material to be heor own demon as well though.

5:06 As a brazillian myself, I already know the perfect demon design for Boto Encantado (which by the way, he is mostly known and refer to as Boto-cor-de-rosa (Pink-boto)). In the brazilian Internet, the Boto Encantado had become a meme since his legend has been associated with cheating women and cuckold (which are topics much more joked and memed about here in Brazil than in the US), so many memes started to circulate on the internet depicting Boto Encantado as a muscular, shirtless and pink skin man with a dolphins' head (if you don't trust me, just google "boto cor de rosa meme"), and to top all out, the memes also come with some silly phrases like "hey married" or "sorry friend, didn't know your wife is married", watch would be some funny dialogs during demos negotiations.
Anyway, awesome video Strain, I really like your content

From the Brazillian Mythology, Saci Perere, or just Saci, would be so sick, a jirae race demon who is a trickster spirit that protects the forest from hunters able to create tornados, in smt would be an Zan user able to cast Pulinpa, Sukukaja, Sukunda and maybe with some evasion passives, probably with Drain Force and Weakness to Fire affinities.

On the topic of Crepitus, I think them adding the fictional goddess of torture Mesperyian, or goddess of the internet Kyberia would make fun additions to SMT's smorgabord of Greek deities. Having modern fictional beings alongside the real gods of old would be pretty cool, especially as possible Personas.

  • @DreadLockedCipher

I love this. There are so many myths, monsters and figures that have yet to pop up in Megaten, and the choices here are great. I'd honestly love to see more lists like this.
For me, one myth that I think could be cool would be Krampus. While often overshadowed by their jelly-bellied counterpart, Krampus hasn't gotten that many mentions in media, and with its physical depictions as horned devils carrying chains and branches, he'd fit right into the series.
Another is a bit odder, that being Xing Tian. The image of a headless axe-wielding warrior with eyes for nipples and a mouth for a belly button is something that I honestly wish to see more of, with the most prominent appearance being Smite. Granted, Chi Yu is a more utilized adversary of the Yellow Emperor's in the series, but adding another couldn't hurt.
Another suggestion is that of the Vegetable Lamb. To be brief, there was a myth that the plant, Ciboteum Barometz, was believed to grow sheep, due to the wool-like covering that grew off of it. The sheep that grew from it would be tied to the plant through an umbilical cord, having it only graze the area around the plant. Upon clearing out all nearby folliage, both the sheep and plant would die.

    • @strain42

I actually did almost include Krampus on this list. It was sort of like…I know he’s a popular choice, so I wanted to pick some stuff I thought would be a bit more obscure. I love that lamb one though, I may have to look into that!

Personally, I'd love to see Jimmu-Tennou as a demon in SMT. Wasted opportunity, SMT V, considering the role that members of the Amatsukami play in that game. Jimmu-Tennou, or Emperor Jimmu, was the first emperor of Japan and said to be a great-grandson of Amaterasu. Naturally, this means he's also related to Susanoo and Tsukuyomi. Due to this, I can see a Jimmu-Tennou demon wielding fire and ice magic, or light magic, along with his signature longbow. He'd be a demon of either the Amatsu race or Genma race, and a Persona of the Emperor Arcana.

On a more serious note, I'd like to bring up 2 (3 actually but that third one is a joke entry) guys I think could be in Megaten:
Une: Indrid Cold (For some reason I thought once his first name was Ingrid, me being dumb, yet again): Once met by a man named Woodrow Derenberger in 1966. He said that he came in peace and wanted to know more about humans.
Yes, I know about The Grinning Man story from Reddit, but I didn't wanna use it because Indrid as Indrid is less known (probably, maybe, I don't know).
Too: The Beast of Bray Road: A werewolf from Elkhorn in Wisconsin (which was near Milwaukee, and I live in Cudahy, so yeah), which was about 40 miles from Lake Geneva. 6 or 7 feet tall, sighted in 1936, the 80s, the 90s, 2018, and 2020, so he's still out there.
Though it might just be a normal wolf or maybe a bear, it's more fun to think this 7 feet tall werewolf stalking Bray Road is out there.
Thray: Phantom Chickens: I think this should get in by name alone, like who WOULDN'T want a demon called "Phantom Chicken".
I hope this becomes a series. (And now I have a name for a sword I can forge for Hisame in Fire Emblem Fates)

  • @NintendanGX

There's quite a few new SMT demons I'd love to see.
    1. Gilles de Rais. Since we have Jeanne d'Arc in the series, why not her controversial companion? While it's still up in the air as to whether or not Gilles did what he was convicted of, there's plenty of different directions they could take his portrayal as a demon.
    2. Suijin. This one is the benevolent Shinto god of water. He rules over many of Japan's merfolk (from eels to kappa), and will provide protection to those who over prayer before sailing the sea, making him revered among fishermen. He is also associated with purification, and serves as a patron-saint for motherhood and safe childbirth. The shrines in which he's worshiped are called Suitengu Shrine, Suitengu literally meaning "water tengu" or "water deva". I think having both the suitengu and Suijin himself would be an interesting addition to the franchise. Suijin would likely side with humanity in whatever conflict arises, hoping to save as many lives as possible. Whether a playable demon with Bufu magic, or a new character to provide healing to the player, I'd love to see how Atlus would portray this mysterious water god.
    3. Dokuganryu. Since Masamune Date has been mentioned several times throughout the Persona franchise, and has attained legendary status despite his comparatively smaller significance to the rest of the Sengoku Era daimyo, I think it's about time he got the SMT demon treatment. The One-eyed Dragon himself would be portrayed as a samurai on horseback, whose body is mostly shrouded in darkness, with one menacing glowing-red eye. He'd be wearing his iconic crescent-moon helmet, and his attacks would all evoke the aura of a dragon. His special attack would be reminiscent of his most brutal battle against the Hattakayama clan, where he and his forces chased his enemy into the river to slaughter them all. Dokuganryu would summon an ocean of blood to wash over his opponents, and then charge at them with ghostly aparitions of other Date clansman, all forming together as the aura of the blue dragon envelops them and crashes down on the enemy.
    4. Fujin & raijin. Both of them. Born from the Shinto mother goddess Izanami, Fujin is the god of wind, and his brother Raijin is one of many lightning gods. They both emerged from Yomi after Izanagi tried to shut Izanami out. I can definitely see these two being chaos demons, as they ravage the earth with their weather-altering powers. It's pretty obvious what their elemental affinities would be, and as you'd expect, Fujin would use his sack of air, while Raijin bangs on his drum to create thunder and lightning. You'd definitely fight against them both at the same time.
    5. Guy Fawkes. The man infamous for the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. England celebrates Bonfire Night every 5th of November, and the fireworks on that night are a reminder of what would've happened, had this man's plans succeeded. The iconic mask based on his visage was used in V for Vendetta, and is the symbol of the hacker group Anonymous. Guy Fawkes already has an iconic look, so that could easily be translated to Megami Tensei. and given his affiliation with gunpower, fire skills would be his forte. I can imagine him throwing gunpowder from within his cape at enemies whenever he attacks.

I’d love to see some of the Orisha from Yoruba (a West African religion). The most popular ones are Shango, his partner Oya, Oshun, and Yemoja (my favorite).
I’d also like to see the Gullah legend, the Boo Hag made into a demon. The legend is a skinless humanoid creature would approach people while they slept and would suck out their breath for sustenance. If the victim ever woke up and saw the creature, the Boo Hag would steal their skin so they could walk out during the daytime. The legend was supposedly an explanation for sleep paralysis or untreated sleep apnea.
We’ve seen the Loa in SMT before, but I think other Voodoo legends and deities would be great. Papa Legba, Baron Samedi, Madame Brigitte, the works. Oh, maybe even Marie Laveau for a historical deity or Persona?
I’m probably biased because I want to see more African and black culture represented in media along with my family heritage involving Hoodoo and New Orleans Voodoo, lol. Cool video and this would be a great series! 😃 I came from your neglected demons video and that would be a great series too.

while somewhat over-expressed, there is one christian saint that would fit perfectly well with the wackiness of SMT, and that's Saint Joseph of Cupertino, borne near naples, became a saint once he managed, under his own will and the Providence in the form of the miracle that allowed him, to achieve self-sufficient flight. a monster of that ilk, or even better, a persona based on that figure, can only be a wonderfull time
the steamboat willie would work as a "bendy and the ink machine" angle, a once-loved being of fantasy drenched in the crime of heartless diligent and boards, suffocating the original pure core of fun of the character, which honestly is how jaded adult have being seeing the mouse for a while now
Crepitus I unfortunately see as a teammate to Kambari, but even worse at his side I can see Cloacina, latin goddess of sanitation and sewer system, which temple was built at the Cloaca Maxima, for a, pardon my pun, crappy love story between the two, as being with a shared passion, appreciation for the art of clean bathroom, and body odor...
two weird concept that could work in the more 'current' settings (like soul hacker) would be Scrozzle, the being of computer and mechanical failure, taking the name from the process where data fails to being recorded correctly, and the internal processes of a computer creates waste data, and Catastrophobia, the personification of the fear of calamities and disasters, especially the one caused or ordered by the men in suit in front of desk, playing games of tactic with each other with the people as the pawns. if they go down the "every big SMT games is either SMT1 or 2", they could have an early ending by fighting these 2 and prevent the nuking of tokyo altogether, this time
and as a joke entry, Lil'Devil. the stereotypical red, spade tailed and trident-holding pop rapresentation of the "christian" devil, a weack early special boss that has a lot of possible attacks, being an undefined mix of most archdemons of old, and absorbing a lot of flack from them

my fellow brazilians will find this very meme-y, but I'd love to see Curupira in smt. Curupira is a fire haired boy (sometimes represented in animal form as a gorilla) with inverted feet that uses them to confuse colonizers and stop them from advancing inland, however, some tribes share a different version of the myth, saying he kidnapped children only to bring them back 7 years later, among other things

We have Curupira in the franchise, he appears in Demikids/Devilchil as Kibra and with strange representation of him imho
I agree we need a new version of him, or better, maybe not Curupira himself, but his female counterpart Caipora with her javelina, weak to light and resistance to fire and force since she carries a torch with her and is afraid of sunlight. hiding in the deep of forests

I think a good choice for the series would be the Jana, a species of Sardinian folklore fairies that are said to inhabit them famous "Domus de Janas" of the island. They have magical powers, cna do good and bad things to humans depending on how they are treated. She could be a low level Fairy demon like Jack Frost or Pixie.
I would also wish for folklore/legendary Christian Saints to be added, but the one I would wish for the most would be Christopher, the martyr giant who helped Child Jesus cross a river, only to find out that the Child was so heavy because he was carrying the whole World with him. In some depictions he even has the head of a dog, which other than rasining some speculations of a possible connection to pagan gods like Anubis, was treated by some as an example of how Christ could bring Salvation even to non-humans. The Sant is still commonly worshipped to this day. I think the race that would suit him the most would be either Brute or Yoma.

I want a Roko's Basilisk demon. To prevent confusion with the actual Basilisk, maybe you could call it Cyberdome or something.
It'd Sort of be in the same vein as Chemtrail or other urban legend demons. It could be a demon that nulled phys and used instant kill spells, tying into the being's untouchable nature and ability to wipe people from existence. In terms of design, you could make it a large grandfather clock with LCD screen demonic eyes and huge, jutting mechanical limbs exploding from it to represent how it's a demon that represents the logical extreme of technological advancement.
Idk, I just love urban legend demons, and I think this one would make a great addition.

If I have to think fast, I would say:
From ufology: the Flatwood Monster (I actually have a fanrt of this), the Hopskinville Goblins, All Colours Sam and the Fresno Nightcrawlers are obvious candidates, I can't belive neither of the first three have made it into any of the games yet. Then out of personal preference: the Paciencia Abductors (I actually have a fanart of this), the Pascogoula Aliens, the Zanfretta Aliens, the Dover Demon, the Loveland Frogman (this one has strong goofy potential if they give it the weird looking wand as in the reports), the Meccano Mummy (this one looks like that one monster from Mimi no Kaidan by Junji Ito) the Old Saybrook Blockhead, the Brains from Palos Verdes, the Casa Blanca Entity and the Poole Pyramid.
From popular culture: Machine Elves/Clockwork Elves (I would like to see if how Atlus adapts the original drawing of them).
From 2chan: Kunekune and the Big O Heads.
From Mexico: Youaltepuztli, The Scorpion From Cell 27 (El Escorpión de la Celda 27), The Hairy Hand (La Mano Peluda) and The Mannequin from Reforma (El Maniquí de Reforma, not to be confused with La Pascualita, another possesed mannequin that could also be a demon on its own right).
From Colombia: The Alligator Man (El Hombre Caimán).
    From Peru: The Pishtaco.
From Chile: The Leather (El Cuero).
From Argentina: Belek the Vampire (Belek el Vampiro), The Grey Man (El Hombre Gris), The Cat Man (El Hombre Gato).
From the UK: The Hairy Hands of Dartmoor, The Iron Man of Gorbals, Jenny Greenteeth, Bloody Bones and Rawhead, Christopher Slaughterford and Spring-Heeled Jack (this one is another obvious one I can't believe that it isn't in any game).
    From Iceland: Tilberi and Necropants/Nábrók.
From old europe: Hands of Glory.

As a Finn I'd love to see some Finnish myth stuff, like Tuoni and Tuonetar, Väinämöinen, Ilmarinen and such. Numerous variations of Hiisi could be cool too, but I feel like Noita scratches that itch already. From Hinduism I'd like to see Pramatma and Bhagavan so with Brahman they could become Parabrahman. Also Buddha, just give us Buddha already. Monad I guess is sort of not necessary since Axiom and Great Will seem to be stand-ins for it, and we've already had numerous takes on Sophia from gnosticism.

Here are some that I'd like to see:
    1) Popobawa from Zanzibar. A giant one-eyed bat with a fondness for sodomy. Might be too similar to the Incubus, but it would be cool to see more African folklore be represented.
    2) Rhiannon, from Wales - specifically the Mabinogion. A Welsh goddess equivalent of Epona from Ireland, she rides a white horse that nobody can catch up to, despite it only traveling at a canter. In the Mabinogion, she is falsely accused of infanticide, and forced to be ridden like a horse as penance. I imagine that that last part could be an interesting angle to approach her design for MegaTen.
    3) Bacon's Chicken from London. More of an urban legend, the story goes that on one snowy night in Highgate, London, Sir Francis Bacon was struck by the idea of using snow to prevent meat from spoiling. Wasting no time, he bought a freshly slaughtered and plucked chicken, and went about stuffing it with snow. A few days later, Bacon died of pneumonia. Since then, there have been reports of a headless, pure white chicken haunting the area of Highgate. Not much else is known about it, but I'd like to imagine that it's MegaTen incarnation would be a bit of a playful trickster, throwing snowballs at everyone.

From those you listed, I like Hachishakusama and the Squonk the most.
Personally, I would love to see at least one figure from the german Struwwelpeter tales. Like these two:
    - The Tailor, with his signature move "Thumb Cutter" (single target physical damage + Tarunda).
Konrad wouldn't stop sucking on his thumbs. So as a punishment, the tailor came and cut them off - using a giant scissor.
    - Nikolas, with his signature move "Ink Barrel" (Dekaja + chance for a random status ailment on multiple targets).
Ludwig, Kasper and Wilhelm were making fun of a random black guy for being black. Nikolas didn't like that, and dipped the boys in his giant ink barrel, so they too could experience being black.
(even though I grew up with these stories... now that I type them out, they're a bit weird)

I feel like in the right game Steamboat Willy would make perfect sense. Several of the games have dabbled with the idea of pop culture becoming enough of the collective unconscious that it essentially forms part of mythology. Really, when you strip it down, that's what Cryptids often are since things like Fearsome Critters weren't seriously believed in.
That same reason is a legit reason why things like Slenderman (or an expy thereof) could work. When we've got various Japanese toilet ghosts and Chemtrails as demons, it doesn't seem that farfetched.
