- So here's the deal with my $750 Mercedes ML350 - it needs work. If you watched the first video, you know there was no oil and lots of issues. But the Mercedes W163 reliability is legendary and she made it home. Now the work begins. In this video, I'll show you how to test for a head gasket leak and do lots of repairs to help with the Mercedes W163 reliability.
Be sure to watch the first video in this series - • What Have I Done??

Turn off the car jack the front end up and turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and right about 10 times and it will bleed your power steering. if it's still noisy you may have a bad pump.
Good job. Would have been good to change the oil while doing the filter and start with both clean. Ideally they should be changed at the same time.
I added 5 quarts on the way home
@@MonkeyWrenchMike Yeah but you're only diluting the bad stuff. This is still mixing around the engine and will prematurely clog up your new filter. Best to drain it all out and know the oil and filter are both clean. When a car has been low on oil it puts additional stress on the remaining oil to preform its job of lubrication. Eventually it congeals which doesn't mix well with new oil.
i had noticed that you checked the rocker arms and found at least 2 loose ones but then put the valve cover right back on without tightening them up. thats where the ticking sound is as far as i can tell. just make sure to go back and tighten them up if you can.
This isnt a 1972 chevelle. These cars have hydraulic lifters which auto adjust. They were loose due to lack of oil pressure. Most engines have been like this for the past 30 years or more.
Yes, these are hydraulic.
@@MonkeyWrenchMike well I didn't know. Most engines I know of were manual adjustment. News to me
Mike I vote we watch you do a complete tuneup! 12 plugs and 6 coils please!!
Take us with you on your scavenger hunt to the Automotive Boneyard. At least I always enjoy them.
The hood opens up the service position on the ML, just move the struts to the other peg.
NAPA sells the same MB power steering oil for a lot less, same part number.
Full coolant flush including the two bolts at the bottom of the engine.
You got a great deal, just keep giving her some love.
Mike, I’ll sell you my 2001 E430 sport/final edition with the e55 amg sport package including the suspension 1 of 133 fully loaded with Xenon w210 . It’s located in Palm Springs California asking $6500. It’s turn key you would love it.
Sounds good that 👌
Got any pictures?
@@omarmoran3097 what’s your email
That’s the type of purchase Mike has built his channel around-turn key and ready to go and we can watch videos of him just looking at it. “Well, would ya look at that?!? Just look at it!”
@@kraignadjkovic5494 🤣🤣🤣
Glad you let that fuel spill air out. We don’t need chapter 2 of Engine Fires R Us. 😁
The rockers seemed to be way to loose if they can be adjusted it will probably take the tick out
Hopefully not an indication of a flat cam lobe
Loved this! The clacking sound might be timing chain/tensioner related.
Fantastic job Mike ! Looks amazing inside 👍 Hope you get rid of the clacking. 🇨🇦
O K Mike, so the head gasket does not leak, but ALL of the other gaskets do. 😂
Great job Mike ! I knew you'd get . 💪💪What a beauty Lola.
I have had several vehicles that chattered and the only thing I have used is Berrymans B-12 Chemtool and poured in the engine and it cleaned all the oil passages and the chatter went away oil change proved how much junk was in it,then put some in the Gas tank to clean injectors and spark plugs.
That screen is proof that all these new cars with massive touch screens will age horrible and so outdated within a decade.
Thanks for the great content Mike!
Cheers Pat 🇦🇺
You may need to replace the lifters in that engine to get rid of that tapping sound. It's definitely louder than my M113. The high pitched whining on startup is the secondary air injection pump and is normal.
Fantastic post. i have a mercedes in the uk. I've only watched a handful of videos of yours. I can't wait to go back and watch all your posts.
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing this anyway your videos are interesting I learned something new every day
Hi Mike the filter seem to improved the oil flow and I think I told you I seen nothing that made me think head gasket with a new bumper snd hatch it’s a nice car great video 😊
Loved this video Mike great job
In a pinch, Marvel Mystery Oil can be used a power steering fluid. I've even used it as automatic transmission fluid.
Sweet! Another video on this ride!
Good morning. Good to see you again.😊👍
Cool. Radio is working now.👍
Nice work!
You are very good with older Mercedes
Had a similar lifter starvation problem on my W163 that was not serviced. Try a bottle of Rislone Engine Cleaner (take out a quart of oil & add the rislone) and it should help.
Great one Mike😀🔥
She is good to go now.👍 Sounds better.
Certainly looking like a different beast to the one Mike drove home. Looking good so far 👍
Stay warm my friend.
Cool that you could get the gaskets and power steering fluid.👍
Add some Lucas oil additive the real thick heavy stuff. Use that instead of oil. It will make it quieter. Try some seafoam in the oil first.
Nice cleaning
Be safe and careful.😊👍🙏
Mike just put the mic farther from the engine, and your rattling sounds will be gone 🤣🤣🤣
The one rocker arm you showed is weigh too loose, there may be a lot more
Yup!
Good video 😀
Hey Mike - always good to see you. Is this not the perfect tow vehicle? The engine chatter is grating but perhaps it needs a really strong engine flush and fresh oil? The v8s get ticky as you know. I hated these when they came out, I drove an 02 500 extensively and the handling and interior quality sucked. Now I’m older and I drive slower, the fact that these are sooooo cheap and simple, kinda makes me wanna find one (as I’m clearing a foot of snow drift off my drive here in Vancouver!). It’s way nicer than the Escalade (sorry not sorry). Stay warm!
You too!
Id buy a $20 raffle ticket for this $750 car. That math gotta be nice across 50K subs. Just an idea....
9 years ago when I was looking for an SUV I looked at ML350's. I loved the interiors but all the ones I could find had over 150k miles and I wanted one around 70k. Ended up with a Jeep that was 2 years younger with the Mercedes 3.0 and 5spd trans with 76k on it.
Wow that snow! And Mike you need an American car omg 😂keep up the great work Mike!
Power steering should be CHF-11S fluid only.
Will be good to go when you replace that gasket.😊
Mike...you need to adjust the rocker arms! I'd almost guarantee that they're making the ticking sound. As soon as the engine begins to warm up, they start making noise.
Whilst the valve cover was off did you check the lash or does that matter so much in this engine? Those front cylinders sure seemed to have alot of rocker play when you were checking them.
And interior looks better after cleaning.
Looks like brand new.👍
It sounds like its suffered from oil starvation, resulting in the tappets being noisy, you could have addressed that while you had the covers off!
The Jag has become the exercise bike that you throw clothes on. 😂😂
Sorry Mike good luck buddy
The Mercedes doctor at work again working his magic.👍
No leaks is good.👍
Ad some Marvel mystery oil. It will help quiet the motor. It helped on my sticky lifter on my RV.
Happy Wednesday Mike
You need to set your rockers, way too loose. That's your tick. Really should not run it like that as the rocker can actually turn in there throwing everything out of wack. I would check the other side too. It is not hard to do, just read up on it, and find the specs for your engine
They are hydraulic
I did not know that, guess there are still lots of things to learn. A little trick I think I saw Pudden do. Take a long extension bar, and put one end to your ear, and the other on the area you think is causing the tapping. It will be very loud to you if you find it, just keep doing that till you locate the noise. Hope this helps, great content, keep up the good work.
@@MonkeyWrenchMike
need to clean them cam followers out or put some thinner oil in it, the holes are that ting to get through the lifters it might be to thick, or could be blocked, take em out and soak em over night
Valve cover gasket and it sounds hopefully out of adjustment valves not rod bearing 😢
You should replace the roller followers, that's your chatter.
You were so high on the truck last video😮
The rocker arms may need to be adjusted
Hi Mike, I've seen some guys have luck with a heat gun on those rubber hoses when then go hard.
Great idea!!
The ml gets a bad rap but they usually run well
Mikey - sounds like a German sewing machine - lolz
Mike said wood
The M113 is one of the best Mercedes engines, the head gaskets flatten out and leak, you should have changed them if you took them off. The rubber hoses do harden with age and also should have been changed. There both inexpensive. The V6 and V8 engine of this type is known to be very reliable.
I didn’t touch the head gasket or remove the heads
I think he meant valve cover gaskets.@@MonkeyWrenchMike
I do have a question for you Mike cents you are still looking for a truck did you get that gmc one and did you know that Mercedes Benz have made a truck it was made in 2018 called 2018 Mercedes Benz X class Pickup Truck 🛻 that truck is amazing looking 😊
Hey maybe you can do paintless dent removal
And when you get the bumper replaced.😊
All more a reason to fix your cars instead of wondering around a junk yard.
Put bonnet/hood in service position
The damage looks like a accidental jack knife while backing up looks to be easily fixable
Bad lifter making the tick? Are the spark plugs all tight? Seemed like it was huffing smoke. An engine oil flush might help out the tick. Those engines always an oil pump whine due to the rubber deteriorating on the sprocket.
I think that dent in the back door could be heated up and pulled out.
Love it
Last night was LAST night. LOL
I just can't get past the Fox jacket.
pre '08 350 v6 motors i stay away from. They are not like the good old 320 v6.
That bottle looks like the Mobil 1 bottle. Even though it says Mercedes-Benz on it. 😊
Leaky valve cover gasket and maybe an exhaust leak? Sure is tappy.
LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!! Do you not think a DPR person could fix the tailgate?
Adjust the valves or buy new lifters
Hydraulic
It seemed pretty obvious it didn’t have a blown head gasket-just some condensation under the cap-when it didn’t run hot or belch steam on the drive home. Now as for why it was so low on oil… euro cars don’t have a tendency to leak, do they? 😂
Sounds better and I bet a duck could clean the windshield from snow in no time...
Blue devil if you have a gasket problem
A pdr guy can pop out that dent.
The power-steering needs pentosin....
Sounds like a valve tap
A stethoscope would have answered alot of questions before you tore it apart.
Doesnt anyone simply use transmission fluid anymore to clean an engine???
Yup!!
Mike should get a Lexus and not a Mercedes🤪👍🏻🍻😅
Put ls motor in it
Ha what s dill with Randy and t k
I don't believe you had the rocker covers off and didn't gap the tappits, they are way too loose.
They are hydraulic and cannot be adjusted.
sorry Mike, it sucks, it also sucks that I don't know as much as I thought I did. 🤐🤐🤗@@MonkeyWrenchMike
Sounds like a diesel engine 😂😂😂
Yeah it's a Mercedes 😅, there is a reason it was at auction..
Hi, What happened to one of your ducks. I only see only 1 in your videos playing with Lola.
I believe that the mate of the existing duck was taken by a hawk or eagle. 🦅
@ImGdiddy ooohh that is sad. It became express lunch for a baldie 😮😮😮😢😢😢😢😢😢
Whoever is watching this video, never give up on your dreams.😇
it sounds like it needs a valve adjustment
They are hydraulic
Engine needs tappet adjustment.
