Hi xc,When spraying after your 1st top is applied and you notice some filler has shrunk or a crack. How do you address this situation when spraying and looking for the best possible outcome in quality but also being efficient. Thanks

Greg Elliott Hi Greg, you can address that with another round of spackle, something that sands very easily, or if its only a few holes you can spackle, let it dry, and wipe it with a damp rag, looking closely to level it. Thats kind of a touch up method for shallow stuff.

Greg Elliott To address the situation in the future, you can do first filler with an Elmer's and Crawford mixture, machine sand it, clean, and do a second round of filler everywhere with pure Crawford's which is going to sand real quick and easy by hand. On that round of spackle I find it much easier to just spackle every single hole instead of looking at them and deciding if they need spackle or not... low and high every hole gets hit cuz it's so quick and easily with a soft sanding sponge even.

What primer do you use on mdf mill packs? Is it different from wood trim?

Kevin Nichols Well with mdf you don't have to worry about wood tannins at least. You do want to use an oil if you're worried about the MDF swelling up or just wanting to be able to sand the primer nicely. Another words I recommend oil and it's a very good quality job. You can still do a successful job with acrylic primers, but some work better than others and I would avoid zinsser 1-2-3 and types like that. Go for a quality latex enamel underbody

XC Painter I see some painters suggest BIN shellac primer for MDF? I have a trim pack with a mix of MDF, factory primed pine and bare poplar to paint.

Kevin Nichols okay, great. Thank you for giving me that info. You definately don't want to use shellac, at all, too brittle, hard to sand, runs easy. Lacquer undercoater is appropriate but you have to know what you're doing using that product. You have to spray two coats to build up over all the grainy wood. Then you buff it down with fine sanding sponges. You have to ventilate the areas as much as possible, have extra resiprator cartridges and prefilters on hand. 3m 6006 are good ones, 6001 can't handle too strong of fumes.
Over that pre primed Pine you're absolutely going to have to Prime that again you cannot trust that primer to block the tannins.
So you can use lacquer undercoater ,
Or Benjamin Moore Fresh Start 217 oil primer is also great. It's easier to use and handle in a way, but it is a slow dry it takes overnight and into the next day to dry completely but it lays down really smooth. And it's guaranteed to seal out all the MDF and raw wood.

XC Painter thank you! I will definitely go with the 217. I’ve never used lacquer. Don’t want this one to be the first!

I plan to paint my trim next weekend. I have primed all my walls with PVA primer. If I spray 217 primer, should I tape up the window trim edges and the wall above the baseboard? Will the 217 flash? I plan to spray the 217, then semi-gloss BM Advance. Then roll the walls with a BM Aura eggshell.
