    I don't think I am going to get the Pro, I have the Vive already and I am happy with it.
    Maybe 2 more VR generations will convince me upgrading my Vive and PC.

      fluff, that's apple who is doing that. Plus you have to remember valve is in charge here when it comes to the vive. That's not going to happen, in fact, a lot of the hardware is going to be backwards compatible, so you can buy the pro but still keep your old equipment if you prefer the wands, etc etc

      Eren Black Edits so why is their new one just slightly better? I would've expected a much wider fov and knuckle controllers incl but the upgrade is just slightly better

    The intersting part about the two cameras, is that they are placed exactly where the lenses are and that to me suggest it will allow both stereo image of the real world and possible even some AR stuff.

    No eye tracking means it is still stone age VR. Eye tracking is the key to it all. Moreover, with eye tracking, they could move to 4K resolution right now without straining existing graphics cards (you only need to render at full resolution at the point of focus, not everywhere else simultaneously).

    • @treborrrrr
      @treborrrrr 7 лет назад +23

      Eye tracking is just a part of the whole package. To truly take full advantage of that, the sweet spot in the optics need to get bigger. What good is eye tracking if what you're looking at is still out of focus because the optics wont let you see it properly?

    • @ji3200

      eye tracking tech might take another 4 to 5 years to be perfect like Oculus said so it you want to wait then be patien because im going to buy Vive Pro and enjoy it now until then

      I think you also need focus shifting based on your pupil dilation.
      I want to look down the iron sights of a rifle and have a choice of how much I’m focusing on the front post or target.
      It would probably be very difficult to calibrate.

    Rumor for price is $350 for headset only. Kinda makes sense considering the base stations and lighthouses account for like half the price of the original vive. Really hope this is what the price is or atleast relatively close. $500 or more and you're going to alienate a lot of people. For $350 it's a insta buy for us early adopters.

    • @MulleDK19

      Except that the quality of the Vive is garbage, so the controllers and base stations have all fried or will soon, by the time the upgrade is available.

  • @AE-dn8es
    @AE-dn8es 6 лет назад +7

    YES! I've been waiting specifically for you guys to do this review, excellent work, well covered.
    I believe HTC went with the Pro tag as the tech is not developing at a running speed yet, I believe their choices are, wait for slowly progressing tech like foveated rendering, eye tracking, better lenses etc. to improve, or ship minor (but pretty decent) upgrades at regular intervals (6mths) while making the whole system modular (awesome idea IMO).
    But I also feel that Oculus aren't shying away from the high-end consumer market, they just aren't following this modular trend, so they will likely announce CV2 at Facebook Dev or Oculus Connect *with a much later scheduled release date and few details). But they tend to hold out for the slightly more advanced tech (personally I think this hurt them last time they tried it, but hey, maybe it will pay off this time)
    Regardless, I am likely going to convert to HTC Vive as I have been a long time Rift supporter, but I love this modular, steady release schedule for HTC's VR gadgets. But if Oculus come out and wow me with a major all-in-one release, who knows.
    One thing is for sure, thoses stereoscopic cameras could do wonders if the devs have a bit of free reign with them, augmented reality potentially, automatic object mapping, neural networks trained for object detection in VR would be fun too. Turns your cat into an in-game cat for example.

    What's that you're pointing at at 12:02 ???
    Could it be an IR camera for eyetracking?
    Because if it is ... it actually won't require a more powerful GPU, in fact it will run better than the old Vive.
    Now I realize if it is, it's not enabled right now, but if it isn't then what is it?

      It's just a light and/or distance sensor. If the headset isn't worn, the displays inside the headset will switch off.

    • @DrArgoss
      @DrArgoss 7 лет назад

      How would eye tracking make it less resource intensive. You’re still having to render two separate images on two high resolution displays at the same time.

    • @carloscervantes836
      @carloscervantes836 7 лет назад

      MrRolnicek tobii eye supposedly will have their eye tracking tech in HMD’s starting at the end on 2018 so I’m guessing oculus is going to wait it out for the gen 2 rift to get foveated rendering in 2019.

    • @CDRaff
      @CDRaff 7 лет назад +2

      DrArgoss foveated rendering uses eye tracking so that the video card can render only the things you are looking at directly in high resolution while rendering the rest of the scene in low resolution.

    1. Better Optics that doesn't require robot head movement to read text legibly
    2. Better resolution (2k per eye preferred)
    3. Wireless solution included with easy setup.
    4. Include Valve's Knuckles prototype when they release.
    If these conditions were met with the Vive Pro's ergonomics and 4 base stations included. I would gladly pay $1500 for this complete package.
    Until then I will wait and dream.

    Are we sure we'll need an upgrade? I run an i5-7500 @ 3.4ghz stock, cheapo 8gig gtx 1070, 8 gig ram @ 2133, scores 10.1/11 in steamVR benchmark/test. I mainly play Assetto Corsa, and depending on how optimized the track is, I can crank SteamVR's Super Sampling up to 1.8 when I'm just hotlapping alone (no other cars to render), or 1.5/1.6 when in races with many cars, without dropping below 90fps or getting reprojection issues.
    I suspect/hope I'll be able to just lower the SS down to about 1.2/1.3, still get some of the AA benefits, and of course the image will look crisper with the higher DPI.

    • @HybridEnergy
      @HybridEnergy 7 лет назад

      Nah, they are over exaggerating the requirements. Native resolution is far easier to run than super sampling and people on anything above a 1070 are super sampling up the wazzoooo . Since some people will not longer need to SS it may actually reduce min specs.

    • @BC-cp5vr

  • @tortordenful
    @tortordenful 6 лет назад +6

    Sure vive needs higher res panels as much as any.
    But keeping te same lenses means this was a rushed job. There is no point in much of the resolution is blurred by the vive's lenses and their positively needlepoint of area of focus.
    I don't see a point in buying this until they also change those.

    • @GettingGoal

      Anders Eismann You are the first to ever claim they have changed anything with the lenses, not one press release or review has mentioned it as far as I have managed to find and read.
      If you are right then of course great.
      Still suspect they will price themself out of a running.
      Since we need bases and controllers, and the wands ergonomics are atrocious.
      Anyhoo any more than 250$-300$ and I would certainly not consider an upgrade, and wouldn't be surprised them trying for a 450$ launch if not more.

    I'm pretty sure the dual cameras do the same as last time. edge detection so you see stuff in your room, but this time with depth. I hope this can actually replace the chaperone. Image seeing more and more of "reality" as your leaving the playspace center. Walk up to your monitor, see the monitor, walk to the middle of the room and seamlessly transition back to VR.

  • @Puck90a
    @Puck90a 6 лет назад +4

    I'm glad to see they aren't giving up on developing VR more, because I DO want VR someday. There are three main reasons I haven't adopted it yet: 1. High headset cost. 2. Steep PC hardware requirements that still may require running games on medium settings. 3. Poor headset resolution. So up to this point, #3 has been the main deal breaker. I'm willing to bite the bullet and spend the money on a headset and PC upgrades, but not if I have jagged screen door visuals and can't read the gauges on an X-Plane instrument panel or see a car 20 feet in front of me in iRacing. So I'm hopeful that the Vive Pro will solve my #3 issue. If it does, I may finally drop the cash and enter the VR world.

    • @adamvongaertner5224
      @adamvongaertner5224 6 лет назад +1

      It's definitely worth the price if you like simulation games. I can't play a flight sim game that isn't VR anymore. X-plane 11 vr is amazing and so is DCS. But computing power isn't there yet to support the best looking headsets. PiMax 8k is the only headset that actually gives a comfortable FOV and resolution, but in order to play games with it you will need to get a time traveling delorean to go into the future and grab a graphics card that is 2 generations newer than what is available.
      Nvidia Volta will be the only card capable of running this headset comfortably. But the aforementioned games may only run at 45fps on max settings on even those cards. TBF, there are games that work great on most computers when using the oculus or original vive, there are lots of them. It's just that most of them look like games made for cellphones and once again FOV on them is pretty small leading to a major neck workout when looking around.

    Just a Vive vs Samsung Odyssey review for those who might find it relevant, especially for those that are thinking whether the Vive Pro has a place for them when the Odyssey is cheap and comes with the same resolution offered by the Vive Pro.
    As a UK Vive owner, I took some extra steps to acquire the Samsung Odyssey after viewing the Tested video, it was tricky, but worth it at the end. (the Samsung Odyssey is not available properly in Europe for some reason)
    The inside out tracking of the Odyssey is decent, and the resolution improvement over the Vive is instantly noticeable, in fact, it's almost hard to go back to Vive after looking through these. So if it's for anything like viewing videos, showing 3D environments (I use it for work showing clients designed spaces), or in sat down games the likes of Elite Dangerous or flight sim, there's nothing Vive does that can beat it in terms of image quality, built in audio by default, convenience of setup, and price.
    However, for stood experience, the line of sight tracking of the controllers simply don't cut it if you're used to the freedom of the Vive controllers, the Odyssey controllers feel like plastic toys, and the LED "crown" prevents you from putting your hands close to each other, often causing detection problems when you do it. For games like Onwards, it's unplayable, your weapon hand, which is often under your chin where the pistol grip would be as if you're shouldering a gun, is almost always out of sight, causing issue as you move and rotate through space. Games such as L.A. Noire Case File, is currently not compatible, prompting an error screen on start up.
    This works out to be just fine for me, as I use the Vive in the living room for real games, and the WMR Odyssey was always meant for use at the study or connected to a laptop for work. So IMO, if you're choosing a VR headset for room scale gaming purposes, right now, the Vive is still better, if it's for videos (cough), 3D space demo, or flight / driving sims, then the Odyssey would have my vote. Even with the Vive PRO on the horizon, I can still see the Odyssey being relevant after that's released due to its ease of setup and lack of tracking stations required. However, when the Vive Pro's price is announced and it isn't too ludicrous, I'll definitely be replacing my living room setup with it as the resolution boost is really worth it.

    I took one look at the dual cameras and thought that these must be for 3D scanning: placing a physical object in a room then taking roomscale tracked stereoscopic images would allow for running software to compile the images into 3D objects and environments. This could be particularly useful for making a portable scanning station for museums, virtual tours, and recreating objects in VR or CAD programs that don't have a virtual equivalent for 3D printing.

      Most likely that you are going to be right Ponlets, so big bad news for us non US (or normal country) VR technology interested. That just means that some of us will have to wait even more to be able to try VR. Even if I would buy the normal VIVE, its only sold with both VIVE controllers as a combo, which I don't want now that the "Knuckles" are near to be released. Even knowing that the Pro exist, as a user of the regular VIVE, would you recomend me to buy it?

    • @BizzMRK
      @BizzMRK 6 лет назад

      Its meant to filter out breathing into the mic which is an big problem with the htc vive. Most people, including myself, actually taped off the front of the headset to add some sort of pop filter to it.

    • @hanswurst3811
      @hanswurst3811 6 лет назад

      because of missconstruction a built in noise cancelation ??? why a mic in a VR headset ? remove this shit :-D if anybody plays multiplayer games and wants to talk to others with VR than he/she has another microphone/ headset as well

    • @BizzMRK
      @BizzMRK 6 лет назад

      You move in your room, meaning you will never stay near an stationary microphone for long. An seperate headset is not only annyoing to use everytime you put on or off the headset, but the cable usualy isnt very long and just gets in the way. Besides this, this headset isnt even meant for consumers (hence the 800$ pricetag), but rather for professionals, vr arcades or showfloors, which tend to be very noisy indeed.

  • @urphotoguy

    You mentioned that on the original headset, you could pull it out. Is that for focus and is there a release button that you need to push or do you just pull it out? Thanks

    • @bummer6
      @bummer6 6 лет назад

      it's for focus. There are two knobs on the site where the headstrap attaches that you twist to move the lenses closer or further away from your eyes.

    • @bummer6
      @bummer6 6 лет назад

      Actually, let me correct myself. I'm not 100% sure it's for focus. it might just be for people with glasses and stuff so they can have the lenses a bit further away. I'm honestly not completely sure.

    • @urphotoguy
      @urphotoguy 6 лет назад

    • @urphotoguy
      @urphotoguy 6 лет назад

      Thanks for your help. My BAD. I actually looked up the user manual online and you can adjust the headset. It said... If you wear large prescription glasses or have long eyelashes, you may need to increase the lens distance further from your face. Only increase this distance as necessary, as the closer the lenses are to your eyes, the better your field of view will be while wearing the headset. 1. Pull out each lens distance knob to unlock it. 2. Rotate both lens distance knobs to adjust the lens further or closer to your face. 3. After you're done adjusting, push each knob to lock it back in. I must have missed that in setup. For more information you can find the full manual at... dl4.htc.com/web_materials/Manual/Vive/Vive_User_Guide.pdf?_ga=2.27185598.2038679874.1517238157-1079112490.1517238157

    • @AI-Metaverse-Plus
      @AI-Metaverse-Plus 6 лет назад +1

      Tracking the hands to replace controllers would have the same problem that Windows Mixed Reality has when controllers leave the view of the cameras (and those cameras would likely have a much wider tracking area)

    • @REDxFROG

      ojl10 You all make great points. I suppose it’d be very much on a case-by-case basis. I personally would love it as an alternative option for navigating Bigscreen though. In the end, I agree. I don’t see this method replacing the controllers in every experience, I see it strengthening experiences big time though. It’d be much fun to have the controllers strapped and then let them hang when entering a car and using the steering wheel. I would also be so quick to use them to navigate User Interfaces over the controller. The day we can press logout with our bare hands will be a joyous day for us all.

    Perked up when I heard "Improved text legibility" but, (I don't know if it's just because Norm used a cellphone camera to take a picture of a screen) that text really didn't seem to get much better. Certainly not better enough to warrant a multi-hundreds of dollar purchase.

    • @Vortigon

      It's much better in reality - since the example pic of current vive is way worse quality than the actual headset does, then the picture of the improved vive is also worse quality than pro actually delivers. The example pic of the pro text is actually comparable to the current vive when wearing it.
