  • Doggie wheelchairs cost around $200. You can make your own for $25 or less. I don't have a need for one, but I have had several requests for this project, and had most of the parts laying around the shop.

      @@matsem4200 hi Mat, we never did. Things got so crazy after my dog's surgery we just used towels and a padded strap to support him until he regained his strength to walk on his own...took about 3 weeks before he could move by himself but he's such a fighter! 😢Coincidentally we were just talking about this video because he's older now and starting to have a hard time walking again. As recommended by the OP, we will use 1 inch pipe when we build it. I hope that you can get this done for your dog and that it helps. Please don't hesitate to reply back as I'm curious as to how it turns out. 🙏🏼🤞🏼

      Oh I forgot to mention, we did buy a garden wagon at Harbor Freight Tools for $50 and some 2 inch foam padding from Walmart to make him a wagon with a padded cushion. HE LOVES IT. We take it when we go for walks so when he gets tired he hops on the wagon and we carry him back.

    This seems awesome! I have an 11 yr old 85 lb make boxer. I see you say to use thicker pvc, but what about the length of the pieces (you used 5.5") what should I use for a boxer? Are there any videos of a dog using one of your chairs?

    • @HowToLou
      @HowToLou  3 года назад +2

      My dog is about 20 pounds. I would maybe move up to 1.5 inch PVC for an 85 pound dog. You will have to measure your dog to figure out exact sizes, but you might be looking at around 12 inch pipes for a 24 inch tall dog.

      +Jack Clarke - you don't need much. I would just connect a small length of rope or chain from each of the arms that stick forward, to a regular dog collar. The majority of the weight is on the back wheels. These front arms are mainly for steering.

    Since your dog doesn't need a wheelchair, have you seen a dog use this design? Do they have any trouble staying in it? Do they need a belt or harness of some kind to stay on the seat part? I've seen in most of the "real" wheelchairs they have stirrups for their legs that would seem to hold them in but your design looks a lot easier.

    • @HowToLou
      @HowToLou  8 лет назад +2

      +B Bowen - I made this video because someone requested it. I did not get to test it. If you attach the front parts to the dog's collar, it should stay under his back legs as he walks with his front legs.

Hopefully your dog can learn to push around with two legs. You might want to look into using a doggie coat as a base for the hammock. Good luck.

      Measure your dog from collar to base of tail (not tip) and make your long pipes about half this length. A larger dog will need larger pipes. Maybe 1.5 inch pvc pipe for a large dog. The best is 3M 3939 Duct Tape. No stairs with this. You would need a ramp.

      I designed and built this wheelchair at the request of one of my subscribers. My dog doesn’t actually need it. Instead of a duct tape seat, maybe you could use fiberglass window screen. Use thin wire or strong nylon thread to stitch it onto the frame. The dog could pee through it with minimal mess. Rinse occasionally to clean.

    Could this be adapted to work for a cat?

    • @HowToLou
      @HowToLou  9 лет назад +3

      tristen pascual - It could "physically" work for a cat with no adapting. The problem is that cats are mentally much different than dogs. They tend to freak out when they feel constrained. This is why you rarely see a cat on a leash. If your cat is really REALLY mellow, you MIGHT be able to make this work for them. It is really cheap to buy the parts and build it, so it might be worth a try, but just realize it is a "try" and it might not work. I hope it does. Good luck. -Lou

    I realize this video is 6 years old....hoping I can still get a question answered: Does this axle get in the way of the dog walking? Concerned that his back legs will hit the axle.

      This wheelchair is for dogs that.can’t use their back legs. They sit in the chair

    This is the only design I’ve seen with no straps attaching the dog to the wheelchair. I like the simplicity but does it stay in place with the dog? Doesn’t the dog begin to slip out of the frame or off the seat?

    • @HowToLou
      @HowToLou  3 года назад +1

      You have to attach that top strap to his collar so he can’t move forward without pulling the chair too.

      @@HowToLou Thanks that makes sense. I particularly like the seat design for the hind end. It is quite different from all the other designs I have seen that use padded loops and straps to support the back legs. Your seat idea is so much simpler. Good job!

      My dog is about 20 pounds, but you can just use bigger pipes for a bigger dog.

      +Anne Jacobsen - About 5 inches in diameter. They are the least expensive replacement lawn mower wheels you can buy at the hardware store.
