The first CA legislature passed was the Act for the Government and Protection of Indians of 1850, which authorized the arrest of vagrant Indians that could then be hired out to the highest bidder. This also allowed any white person to go to the local justice of the Peace to obtain Indian children for indenture service many forced to stay till they were 21.There were slave markets where Indian men, women & children were sold.
