Nigeria is one of the world's biggest oil producers. If its rulers weren't so staggeringly corrupt, ordinary Nigerians could be well off too. Africa has abundant natural resources. It could be the richest region of the entire planet. Its poverty is nothing to do with the former European colonialists.

If that’s the case, then surely Europe should pay massive reparations to the UK for saving them during the last war.
The axis nations got huge amounts of money injected post war through Marshall Aid to rebuild their shattered economies. Yet the UK, an ally to stop them, got nothing and we had to pay back huge amounts for the arms supplied by the USA when we were fighting alongside them. As a result, Germany got the latest state of the art manufacturing facilities while we had to make do and mend with what we had, a major factor in the West German 'Economic miracle' of the 60's and 70's and the rise of Japanese goods imported to Europe

Beyond absurd, I am Irish and Britain abused my country as a colonial power for many years but I dont expect reparations for this. It wasn't started by us, it was private companies that dealt with it, Britain ended it, Britain paid to free slaves which we didn't pay back until 2015, their ancestors were captured and enslaved by Africans, it was the Arab's that dealt with it much longer, our ancestors were enslaved TOO! We're also "victims of slavery" when their African ancestors came and enslaved British people! The bulk of British wealth came about because of coal, and the use and exploitation of that coal through engineering to drive the industrial revolution. The belief that sugar from plantations built the British empire is ludicrous. If that is what is being taught in Black History month someone needs to do some serious research into the comparative value of these two 'industries'.
Also being ignored was the cotton industry in the UK. This was the UK’s initial manufacturing boom.
This was a massive driver of wealth , representing 42% of exports by the early 1800s.

Britain participated for 140 years.
But for some reason they say we are responsible for nearly a quarter of any reparations.

So why should their descendents have to pay reparations to Africans, many of whom are descended from slave owners or traders themselves?
It might also be worth mentioning that slavery was universal across the world until we forced the end of most of it, so almost everyone on Earth is descended from slave traders or slave owners somewhere along the line.
Or former slaves or quasi slavery (indentured workers etc) - lots of British tax payers will have ancestors who were one or the other - Kemi seems to think there’s a difference between the British state and the British tax payers and you can get the former to pay and 100% of the burden not fall on the latter….! Britain didn't become rich by 'leading' the slave trade. The slave trade has existed since civilisation began and Britain was instrumental in changing that and abolishing slavery. Britain became poor through abolishing slavery but it was the right thing to do. Brittania 'ruled the waves' because the British navy tackled slave routes and blockaded slave ports 200+ years ago.

I believe I heard somewhere that at the height of the Transatlantic slave trade, it accounted for 3% of the country's GDP. Abolishing the slave trade worldwide cost us 5% of our wealth, to say nothing of the young men who died. Will someone pay us that 2% difference?

It took 150 years to accumulate so should be paid back at £3 billion a year for 150 years.

Femi is quick to point out the wealth in Barbados is concentrated to a few people but fails to realise its the same with the wealth generated from the slave trade in GB. I've certainly not felt any benefit from the trade and anything that I DO have is a result of my own hard work.

The term 'sold into slavery' indicates that when outsiders arrived in Africa, they were SOLD slaves already in bondage, i.e. enslaved people Africans had taken into slavery for use, and sale. They started the trade. They expanded the trade. They profitted from the trade. And they extended it's existence until other peoples took it over. Once the Africa slave nations are assessed, and made to pay in full, reparations for selling millions of their own to other peoples, then and only then, can reparations go forward from the rest of the world.
Absolutely ridiculous that any nation should pay reparations to any other nation. And if the UK pay, I will not pay another penny in tax to this government
