Really enjoyed this - perfect with a Saturday morning mug of coffee. Im slightly embarrassed to say (although only slightly) I've got 5 gshocks now, mostly picked up used from ebay, and have had a couple open to change batteries. The debris that fell out of one of them was enough to plant a small plant, but under the real caseback it was mint - amazing really.
    Thanks.

I'm a watch and clockmaker. I've owned my G-Shock since 1989. Only had to replace the battery once. It's now on year 9 of battery number 2. I even done a video of me throwing it at a pebble dashed wall and 50ft in the air to prove how tough it is. It'll outlast me.

What's crazy is I've been playing around with the inside of G-Shocks since I was a kid. Not to this extent, sure, but just to open, clean, change batteries, reseal, fit new springs, fix poor button connectivity etc. I would struggle with mechanicals I'm sure of it., I always used to outsource those repairs. The work done here is pretty intense for my abilities!
P.S. I've actually replaced those pernickety springs with trimmed springs from spring-loaded pins and the watch beeps have been fine!

So you have watched another channel? Because when opening the watch there was a lot of sand. Instead of cleaning it first, he opened the case, so sand is in the watch at that point. After that, he turned the movement upside down with sand on the case. I would not let hem near any of my watches, ever!

Just a tip for most analog-digital G-Shocks, press and hold the set button (top-left) for 5 seconds until it enters the hand adjust option. This allows you to “zero” the analog hands so they correspond with the correct digital time. Press the mode button (Bottom-left) to switch between the main hands and sub dial. Use the right buttons to move the hands position to get them back to zero. Press the adjust button (top-left) to exit this mode. This should be done every time there is a battery change, or if for whatever reason the hands don’t match.

    • @richardperrettwatchmaker
      @richardperrettwatchmaker  2 года назад +6

Hi Neal... Thanks for this. I actually misaligned the hands a little ( in relation to one another) so I went back in and sorted that out. Then i read the manual and used the facility you describe to sync the hands with the digital read out. It worked very well. Good tip. Thanks so much l. Richard

Most higher end Casios have a "touch movement". This is Casio-speak for actuators on the hand motors that let the watch know their exact location. This is why they need to be adjusted after a battery change.
Also the buttons on G-shocks have dual gaskets instead of the more normal single gaskets, which makes water ingress unlikely. This also means the buttons are large.

Once the watch was reassembled, and I witnessed the functions as the mode control was manipulated, I now realize the necessity for two batteries. This was quite enjoyable, and educational at once. Thank you for posting! Cheers!

A couple of months back I opened and stripped a G-Shock completely. It is really interesting to see how small the actual movements are,on the these modules, each smaller than the battery, and how tiny small the motors are. They are smaller than the smallest screw on the movement.

Have a look at the Chinese pressure testers. They are about a tenth of the price of the Swiss made ones and do precisely the same job of testing to 3 atmospheres (the swiss standard). That's all most testing is done to, unless it's for industrial purposes (like actual deep dive equipment, which is extremely rare).
It's a pretty safe test. The watch sits on hanger in the tank above the 300ml of water which you put in there. You then pressurise the cylinder to 3 atmospheres (most dials go to 6 max but there's really no need). After about a minute you then lower the watch into the water and slowly let the air out. A leak is indicated by a significant stream of air bubbles coming from the watch. A little coming out around the bezel is normal.

@@ianjamieson3985 I got mine from Ebay, AU$270 including shipping, and I've been using it about a year so far. It's one of those things you use occasionally, but no other tool can replace it. I charge $20 additional for pressure testing (clients choice) so it has probably paid for itself a few times. I think all the seals and 0-rings are standard parts so it is probably serviceable if it ever needs it. At that price it's easy to justify the purchase.

What an interesting video. Thank you! Nice to see craftsmanship in any form. In case it is useful to know, the central protruding spring which extends beyond the insulator on the back of the circuit board is to connect the watch electronics to the piezoelectric speaker for the alarm noise. This speaker is visibly mounted on the inside of the metal watch back. I don’t think the spring has any other purpose. Putting the metal back in place may have further compressed the other non soldered electronic connections or the zebra connector against their contacts to make the electronics fully functional. It was unlikely to be related to the spring I think.

33:23 actually you can do the disc adjustment with buttons combination (I forgot which buttons, but it's in the manual)
Because the disc will slightly misaligned sometime if you drop or bump the watch (it's outdoor watch, so that to be expected)
It's good that Casio provide a solution to aligned the disc (and the hands too) without having the user to open the case, they know we will abuse the G-Shock

When I see that those supposedly 10 seconds per year ETA PreciDrive (thermocompensated quartz) movements have jewels (3 to 8, depending on the model), I’m always of two minds. Part of me is saying “quality!” and “it can be serviced!” and another part of me is saying, “I paid under US$200 for this Certina watch new, though the list price is far more, and service would consist of replacing the movement with a new one that’s $65 retail, so wouldn’t I be better off with a no-jewels movement like the one in that solar radio-sync Citizen watch I wore daily for ten years and still occasionally wear?”
If a watch is quartz-based and too cheap to be serviced (barring sentimental reasons such as being Dad’s), are jewels just points of failure? Maybe?
I’m stunned that the G-Shock case is so leaky! It looks as if it’s impervious but apparently it’s only as good as it needs to be… or rather, the delicate innards are safe behind that gasket, but the outer portions of the case are free to accumulate water and dirt in small doses.

Lot of fun watching this. I've changed the batteries in my G a couple of times, but never went that deep into it. One thing, at the end when you are trying to get the mode wheels and hands properly linked... in the Casio manuals for the specific module (available for download), there is a step by step procedure to get everything properly aligned without physically working with the hands. It's different for every module, but anyone can resync without even opening the watch.

I used to scuba dive. After you've been to the beach it's extremely important to wash everything made of metal in fresh water to remove all traces of salt. In this case where it has a plastic over shield, leave it soak for half an hour with occasional agitation.
I would have been tempted to use a little rust converter on the rust stains. About 5% phosphoric acid for about half an hour. You can buy 85% food grade phosphoric acid and dilute 1:16 with a little distilled water. It does tend to leave bare steel with a blue/black patina (iron phosphate) but doesn't touch coatings (your mileage may vary). The bare steel can then be retouched with a little enamel paint or recoated to prevent further corrosion.

@@richardperrettwatchmaker thanks, Richard. I've spoken with two watchmakers about having my 9943-8000 serviced. One told me it would be a waste of time and money, the other said anything with a gear train should be cleaned and oiled after almost 45 years. Have to say I'm in agreement with the latter.

But if you're going to clean and rehab one of the watch world's more economical brands, that "1965 Seiko-Matic with the dodgy bracelet" is absolutely entitled to some love!

Fantastic to see the level of miniaturization that casio achieved on electromechanical parts. Just some comments, The Spring on back is to make contact with the piezoelectric speaker attached on inner face of back metal plate. All g-shocks have same approach to electric ans mechanic connect the speaker. After the change batteries it is also necessary to enter on hands alignment procedure as described in owner's manual.

I'm now looking to ad this one to my growing collection of Casio watches, my first being the vintage classic A203 Blue Thunder received as a present in 1980 which is still going strong !

I bought my first G Shock GA-2000 after I saw your first video about the model. It’s a great watch, and not long after buying it, I saw another color way-my first one is green with a negative digital display, and as I said, it’s great, but when I saw the same model in white with a positive display, I couldn’t resist it, so I bought it as well. Both my GA-2000’s have non-skeletonized hands, because I think they’re more legible..to sum up, the GA-2000 is a great design by. Casio, and your first G Shock video inspired me to buy it..I’m happy with my purchases.

One thing you missed, is that the pushers come out too.
Behind the button they have a cavity where their return sprint lives.
This place collects a lot of gunk too and here it'll affect the feel of the pushers too.
They also have tiny O-rings that can benefit from a bit of grease.
Having that centre spring electrically floating isn't a problem to these modules, it only handles the beeps.
What was probably happening is that the light pusher pushed the module out a bit, preventing it from actuating.
Usually these watches have a reset contact point, which you should connect to ground (the metal module frame) for a second after a battery change.
You can probably realign the wheels in software as the stepper motors have no way of keeping track of position and can drift when turning while receiving shocks.
It was cool seeing how incredibly well-built these fancier G-Shocks are.
I've dug DEEP into my GBX-100 in my modding adventures with it and it's nowhere near as well put together.
Same with the few cheaper non G-Shock Casio's I've taken apart, but all is relative as they stand far above the other cheap digital brands.

Set up a website (Wordpress is easy to do) and show your work on social media. Soon you will be taking on non-precious jobs for family and friends and in a few years you will get you first paid work for sure. • @richardperrettwatchmaker
      @richardperrettwatchmaker  2 года назад

Hi Culture Vulture... The way the module rests inside the Carbon Core naturally provides a measure of isolation from shock as the module can shift around and then settle. This combined with the wider, less brittle pivots in the stepper motors stacks up to a pretty resilient package I guess. Hope this explains. Richard

I worked in the security industry and wore a G-Shock all that period. It was great as it took the knocks of hard everyday outdoor wear. Any other watch would have shown the scars of commensurate environmentalist age but not so the G-Shock. Most military and p0lice wear them as well, because G-Shock takes the heavy and often outrageous nocks the outdoor activity.

What watch would you recommend that could cope with that task? Robust enough for the daily dings. Good time keeping. Fit for task in hot weather, obvious wet conditions and features that would suit a crossing?? Also price point would be a factor.
