- Superb triple Eurofighter Typhoon performance takeoffs of 29 Squadron at RAF Coningsby.
The Eurofighter Typhoon has one of the best (if not, the best) thrust to weight (TWR) ratios in the world, meaning it can accelerate, even climbing vertically at 315m/s. Not even gravity can slow it down when it climbs in steep angles and at pure vertically angles. It is one of the fastest accelerating fighter jets in the world, meaning it can outmanoeuvre its opponent. It is a MACH 2 jet, which means it can reach speeds faster than the speed of sound twice over.
Performance Takeoffs are one of the most exciting takeoffs you will and we were fortunate to capture a triple set. Speaking of triple, the callsign for these three Typhoons of 29 Squadron was TRIPLE X. This represents the three Xs on the emblem/marking of the squadron. We mentioned in our last video that XXX does not equal 29 but there were two traditional stores which date back to the 1920s. I still love the story regarding the misinterpretation of the instructions for the design. The designers were told to place an X, an X and then ONE X, literally XXIX. It was suppose to have the two XXs then the roundel and then IX but it was treated as an X, X and 'one more' X.
Anyways back to the takeoffs. Performance takeoffs can be called unrestricted climbs and sometimes known as quick climbs or zoom climb. Though 'Quick Climbs' are different with regards to the start. Quick climbs are a case of accelerating down the runway, usually clearing the runway at an altitude of around 100ft and then the aircraft will pull hard and climb in a vertical climb. This means the aircraft has reached a very high speed so that it can climb quickly. This is very common at RAF Lakenheath. Now the Typhoon on the other hand can get off the ground in seconds and instead of gaining the speed all the way to the end of the runway, it is capable of doing this within seconds on takeoff. This, in concept, means that the Typhoon is a powerful aircraft.
Performance takeoffs are a necessary type of takeoff to clear barriers in the airspace, restrictions in the airspace, aerodromes with small runways or to avoid other aircraft that are in the skies.

Absolutely stunning footage.quite unique to see a trIple take off. Eat your heart out Tom Cruise,Ted is the new Top Gun!!
Oiiii oiiiii 🤙🏼😎 I’ve not seen this before so was such a treat… and you know what??? A few moments later, a different squadron did a three-ship PTO too!!! This will be tomorrow’s video wahhhhayyyy. Hehe, thanks I will take that as a huge compliment 😎
I guess Ted already knows this, but a Typhoon can go from 0mph to its max speed of Mach 2.5 in under 2 minutes!! Just awesome acceleration! 😃👍🇬🇧
Ooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yeahhhh this is pure awesomeness. Thanks for the info
That's not true. It's top speed is Mach 2 and I've heard pilots say it can accelerate to Mach 1.5 and climb to 30,000 simultaneously in 90 seconds.
@@neilrobinson5115The speed in mph depends on the altitude. Sound speed is not constant.
@@neilrobinson5115 Well then I better keep my mouth shut 😅.
Well the BAC Lightening was pretty hard to beat
Ooooohhhhh yyyeeeaaahhh!! .. Such a treat Ted!! Awesome! Thank you aaaaaaaagain!
Ooooohhhhhh yeah Lee we even managed to get the 3 ship PTOs of 3 (f) Sqn as well 🇬🇧wahhhhayyyyyyyy
So thought we’d try the TedCam in this scenario to give the wider feel of things so that all three weren’t missed. Hope you like it
@@TedConingsby ALWAYS!! 👍👍😁😁😁😁
@@typhoon123 ooohhhh yeah
Hi Ted. The TedCam view gave probably the best look at Typhoon performance takeoffs in a long time. Yeh! even I enjoyed this one. Pip pip young bear.
Oiiii oiiiii Stephen, how you doing? Hehe, you love Typhoons now 😎🤙🏼 thanks for you comment. Nikos has to concentrate on one Typhoon on a PTO when there is more than one. So he thought, use the TedCam to see all three. Now tomorrows video will be another three-ship PTO but from a different squadron and the TedCam was even wider so you should be able to see more of the altitude. It was the first time using the TedCam for takeoff and we may even use a third camera 😎🫡
An amazing video. 29 Squadron, doing what they do best ❤ (one of my favourite Squadrons!). Thank you Ted, sir.
Oiii oiiii Margo thank you so much for the super and glad you enjoyed my awesome 29 😎
Ohhhh yeahhhhhh!!! Ted gets excited, beret goes flying and OMG those performance takeoffs!!! Fantastic Tedcam - that panned out view really shows off the sudden near vertical climb. Top notch stuff as usual team Ted!!
Oiiiii oiiiii Andy glad you enjoyed this one. It had all the ingredients and we hoped we got the perspective right with the TedCam. We were hoping to get the feel of the climb and acceleration. Thanks again Andy ooooohhhh yeahhhhhhh
Outstanding video Ted thanks!
Hi Lee, thank you for your comment 🤙🏼 ooohhhh yeah
DM you Ted re Hurn 👍🙂👍....
Nice framing of the Taxiing 👍🙂👍
Great spotting.....
Hi Nicholas, thanks man 🤙🏼🫡 yeah I hope we can make that. Thanks again for you comments
Nice early morning watch with a coffee. Eurofighter Typhoon doing what a Eurofighter Typhoon does best! 3 wonderful PTO's to gawp at. Fantastic. TED Coningsby HQ delivers. The awesome RAF. Steady shots too. TEDcam footage cool 😎
Oiii oiii Daniel 🤙🏼 thanks man
🇬🇧 Awesome power. Great camera work, Ted! 👍🏻🐻
Oiii oiiii Ken thank you very much ooohhh yeah
Just Wow!!! Thanks Ted! 😃👍🇬🇧
😎 you are most welcome and glad you enjoyed
We have a friend who flew in the Lightning, he was the pilot who did the Air shows, I asked him when going vertical what was the g forces he said they were minimal, amazing.
Speaking to a pilot from Lakenheath recently he said about/between 5 - 6 G’s
@@mandellorian790 about 300+ mph yes
Amazing video well done , outstanding!!!!!!
Thank you very much ❤️❤️❤️
Pity we will never hear a 4 Vulcan squadron scramble sound ever again. Loved them in my RAF days at Waddington.
I was at agricultural college at Riseholme in 1973 to 1976.Just up the road was RAF Scampton. Constant noise of Vulcan doing its thing, awesome. I also remember the Vulcans & F4s coming down to the ranges at Donna Nook on the coast. F4s smoking like they were coal fired, still one of the best aircraft of our time though. Happy days!
Always started the Battle of Britain display with a four ship Vulcan scramble at Finningley. Now that was loud if you were at the ORP!
Cracking sight.
Ooooooooohhhhhh yeah 🫡
Is it even possible to takeoff with that much of load straight into the vertical? What is the T/W ratio of this machine? I don't think F-16s or any other aircraft can do such maneuvers.
Absolutely marvellous and cool on tge three Typhoon 😎
Oooooh yeahhhh thanks Douglas. They were totally cool and marvellous indeed 😎
@@TedConingsby ahh that us fantastic and you are welcome Ted 😎👍

Absolutely rip-roaring stuff! Don't see this every day (if only we could!). 29 Squadron, hope you realise that is very special indeed, PTO fest, thank you. 😁❤️
Ooohhhhhhhhh yeah
Tedcam is awesome :D thank you.
Oiiii oiiii Jason 😎🤙🏼Thanks so much for your feedback on our TedCam 😎
J'adore les Typhoons
Oiiii oiiiii ohhhhhh yeahhhhhhhh!!! Awesome, this is rare never known them to do pto three in a row before this is epic
Oiiii oiiiiii Sall, how you doing? I’m glad you enjoyed that because this was out of this world. So, this was our first time ever seeing a triple PTO… however, not long after this, there was another Three-ship PTO from 3 Sqn ooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yeah!!!! Though this video had all three phoons on the runway ready for takeoff, the typhoons from 3 were rolling one by one ooohhhhh yeah
@@TedConingsby hey up team Ted, I’m well thanks I hope your all well to, omg really!!! I’m not jealous or anything hahaaa 😂 as you can tell I get a bit over excited like Ted does, I’ve sat many a day waiting for one pto so this was absolutely brilliant well done chuffed you got to see it and film it 👍👍👍🤙🤙🤙🧸🧸🧸😁😁😁❤️❤️❤️😎p.s did it rattle your bones a bit??!! 🤣🤣
@@Sall2882 oiiii oiiii 🤙🏼😎 This is another reason why I put up noTEDS, yes it’s a chance for you guys and girls (and teddy bears) to meet us but it’s secretly for the pilots so that they can show us their skills 😂😂😂 But… it has never let us down. Which is why I recommend coming on any of our visit days. Enjoy the new video of the 3-ship PTO which should be ready within the next two hours. Oooooohhhhhh yeah 🤙🏼😎🤩
That's some acceleration to be fair

Heya Ted it's me! This was amazing I sat there last night watching them being filmed and on flight radar 24 I remember seeing 3 typhoons go over Glencoe yesterday they were 20000 ft bit you could hear the slight roar! But I didn't seem to spot them on the map they weren't on civilian radar? 🤣
Ooohhhhh yeah 🤙🏼 lol, yeah it would be odd if they appeared as a civilian 😂 the roar ❤️what beautiful sounds. We got a second three-ship set of PTOs from 3 Sqn too. Will be a future video soon
@@TedConingsby oh how lovely cannot wait to see that
@@glxynukedude it’s awesome 😎 with the TedCam too

Christ I bet that was loud!!
@@TedConingsby Although the loudest thing that I have ever heard was a Concorde taking off over my head, it was sometime in the 80's and I was on a training course at HP, my evening stroll from my hotel to the pub went close to the end of the runway and this thing went right over
@@NurkePL we have a Ted-o-meter (sound meter) at the TCS and the loudest so far is the F35A at 135db. However anything about 130db is loud and no difference other than an Omg 😆
@@TedConingsby the Vulcan right overhead at the Bournemouth airshow a few years ago was pretty loud too
As far as thrust to weight ratios goes
its in the top 10 and thats about it
Top ten or not, this is our number 1 for keeping our skies safe from threat, 24/7/365. So it’s not just about thrust dude, it’s a top all round aircraft. We are proud of our crew and our Typhoons. It’s impressive to watch a PTO too 🤙🏼
I've seen probably every western aircraft do this, non were anywhere near as good as the Typhoon, especially carrying drop tanks.
@@anglonig1 oooooohhhhh yeah Neil The Typhoons are just incredible
