THE MOST AWESOME & SPECTACULAR DUSK F-15E UNRESTRICTED CLIMBS • AFTERBURNERS SUNSET RAF LAKENHEATH

- Ted's Quick Climb Fridays at RAF Lakenheath are always exciting but to have quick climbs at dusk was something spectacular to watch and experience. Four F-15E Strike Eagles of the 492d Fighter Squadron "Madhatters / Bolars" request quick climbs and the sun had just set, leaving the most vivid contrasting colours in the sky. Just enjoy the magical afterburners but pay close to them showing the rare blue afterburner colours.
So what is a Quick Climb?
Unlike the Typhoon which accelerates vertically after between 8 to 10 seconds from brakes to take off, aircraft such as the F15E or F35A will usually clear the whole runway maintaining an altitude anywhere between 40-100ft with speeds of around 320mph and then pull the aircraft vertically or near vertical to quickly climb to the aircraft's cruising altitude. It is more commonly requested by the pilot as a "quick climb" more usual.
What is an Unrestricted Climb?
It is the same as a quick climb.
Why do they do Unrestricted climbs/PTOs/Quick climbs
There are many reasons such as clearing airspace barriers, short runways, to burn fuel before air-to-air refuelling or just to get to a destination quicker. But these are just a few reasons, one also could be to impress the Ted Coningsby Squadron...ooh yeah!
Can pilots just do quick climbs?
No, all take offs are cleared for a standard take off / local climb out but a pilot can request a quick climb but this has to be cleared by ATC.
RAF Lakenheath may have the title R.A.F. but it is in fact a USAF base or even more precise, a USAFE base (United States Air Forces in Europe). It has been a US Air Force base since 1948 and it is home to the 48th Fighter Wing. The wing has four combat-ready fighter squadrons; 492d, 493d, 494th and 495th Fighter Squadrons.
The 492d Fighter Squadron are a combat ready squadron and part of the 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath, England. Initially activated as a Southeastern Air District Army Air Corps training squadron - the 55th Bombardment Squadron (Light) on 15 January 1941, and assigned to the 48th Bombardment Group. The unit was equipped with a variety of second-line aircraft, such as the Curtiss A-18 Shrike and Douglas A-20 Havoc, preparing its pilots and maintenance crews for eventual combat. After the Pearl Harbor Attack, the squadron flew antisubmarine patrols from March to April 1942. Resumed aircrew training, many of the group's members went on to serve in squadrons stationed in Europe and the Pacific theaters. The unit was redesignated as the 55th Bombardment Squadron (Dive) on 28 August 1942.
The 492nd assisted the Normandy invasion on 6 June 1944 by dropping bombs on bridges and gun positions, attacking rail lines and trains, and providing visual reconnaissance reports. On 18 June 1944, the 492nd moved, along with the 493rd Fighter Squadron, to Deux Jumeaux Airfield, France.
On 7th November 1945, the squadron inactivated but reactivated on 10 July 1952 as the 492nd Fighter-Bomber Squadron (492nd FBS), a NATO squadron assigned to Chaumont-Semoutiers Air Base, France. Equipped initially with Republic F-84G Thunderjets, the squadron upgraded in 1953 to North American F-86F Sabre aircraft, with the last of the Thunderjets leaving by 1954.
Then in late 1956, the squadron upgraded to the North American F-100D Super Sabre, being redesignated the 492nd Tactical Fighter Squadron (492nd TFS) on 8 July 1958. However the nuclear-weapon capable F-100 caused disagreements with France concerning atomic storage and custody issues within NATO, resulting in a decision to remove Air Force atomic-capable units from French soil. On 15 January 1960, the squadron and its host 48th TFW moved to RAF Lakenheath, UK. In the early 70's, the 492d McDonnell Douglas F-4D Phantom II.
Redesignated as the 492nd Fighter Squadron (492nd FS) on 1 October 1991, the Bolars switched aircraft again, exchanging the F-111Fs for the McDonnell Douglas F-15E Strike Eagle in early February 1992.

For Ted & Nikos's patience & persistence. Waiting on the QCF action. Thank you.❤
Oiii oiiii Margo thank you so much for the super ❤ooohhh yeah have a great weekend
I was there, on location, a few days after Ted's Party 2023... this was soo beautiful, that awesome red sky, the sound, the almost empty carpark, the waiting... and the unforgettable reward: most beautiful quick climbs ever!
At the end: "is there any more?"... as if that wasn't enough! What a great experience this day was. What a downer to drive from here to the ferry back home :)
Ooohhh yeah. What a scene this was
Beautiful! I have to admit, the F15 might well be the coolest looking fighter ever. I know the F22 and 35 are nice, and the 14, typhoon too, and rafael, but the F15 is iconic. It just looks like it means business.
Oii oiii Jack ooohhh yeah
It's still the Gaffer
Absolutely STUNNING video! I was an GCA Air Traffic Controller at McConnell AFB in Kansas 78-79. When I arrived, the KANG was still flying the F-105 Thunderchief. This video brings back a lot of memories of the Tuesday and Thursday evening launches on Guard night. The GCA was in the middle of the airfield at the taxiway and runways intersections. Since we didn't have anything to do with the launches (around 1900), we'd go outside the trailers and both watch AND FEEL the Thuds when they screamed by in full a/b. That 20' (or close) blue flame and the roar of that engine literally shook your internals. Recovering them a few hours later (around 2100) we would step outside to watch them roll by. They would take off in flights of 4, 2 at a time and recover about the same. The F-105 employed a drag chute to slow down after touching down. It instilled a great amount of pride in this young Controller to see witness the awesome air power at our disposal. Your video instills the same pride in me today! "Jet noise, the sound of freedom!" "I miss the smell of JP-4." Thank You!!
Oiii oiiii thank you so much for serving sir and for all the info in your comments. This is awesome. Thank you so much
They were still flying the F 105's in 1979?? I thought they were retired around '76 or even earlier, since the F4's had been deployed in large numbers to SEA. The F 105 was a fairly large jet to only have one engine, no? Also, is the GCA similar to a "PAR" approach? What is the difference between the two?
AWE !!!!! FFFFfffurrrr Heavens Sake. Amazing,, Outstanding and simply,, Thank you guys for giving me ( us ) all your time,, patience and brilliant Videography 👍👍👍 Scottish AlF
Tony Scott would approve of this video

Oiii oiiii Ellesee 🤙🏼
Truly the life as well as an absolute incredible capture!
Ooohhh yeah
Reminds me of when we used to watch the F111’s at Upper Heyford at night, if you knew the back lanes you could get within 150yds of the planes. The burners did warm you up on a chilly evening! Probably what started my tinnitus.😀
Nice
The sound was amazing and the sight of the afterburners in the night sky was a treat...thank you.❤
Oii oiii Chris thank you very much
That was awesome. So cinematic! Cheers Nikos and LN 48th!

Oi oi nickos nickos and Ted and not forgetting the team ❤ I once had the pleasure of sitting in a field at 10.15pm outside RAF St Athan watching F4 phantoms launch at night, but this is next level , the thrust of those pratt and Whitney engines are bone shaking 😊 . As usual excellent filming, thanks for all you do to bring us such a buzz . One love ❤
Oiii oiii Mike thank you so much and great memories shared there. Wow F-4’s how awesome
Absolutely awsome! The lights, the afterburner, the afterglow and then they disappear in the darkness. Great video!
Oii oiii Susanne thank you glad you enjoyed
Working in this base for the next couple of weeks, its like a American town within the UK very interesting.
That is exactly right, you are in America once you are inside and all things American it is, even down to the paper size, they don’t use A4. Found this out with my certificates for flying there 🇺🇸🤙🏼😎
Should have seen it when it was the massive afterburners of the mighty F-111 leaving.
I miss when the mighty F-111F ThunderVark was there.
Best years of my life.
Spectacular!!
Oii oiii David it sure was

Amazing xxxxx
Ooh Yeah you nailed that Nikos : Feeeeel tha Heat
Ooooooohhhhh yeah thanks Colin
Yeah, I watched these 4 x F15E's go hot pit towards end of live stream plus 2 x F35's. I knew they were coming out too play. In less than a minute after stream ended these beauties taxi'd to side of runway pad, extinguishers were out and groudcrew loitering. Evening was on! Sunset was perfect, cloud cover just right. Rewarded with sweet Afterburner delight, the dancing flames of F15E's lighting up the runway. What a thrill! Magnifico at night are off the scale. I couldn't believe i was watching it. Trully brilliant, what a day! The filming is so damn good you don't miss a thing. Then 10mins after everyone left i saw 2 x F35's do quick climbs standing at crash gate fence. I knew there had been F35 gone hot pitting/ refurl. But I just watched in awe! A pure fluck really I saw them. Had a magic week out and about.
An honour 🎖 ❤

Oiii oiii Dan thank you very much. It was fun having the suspense and wow, what a sky to do quick climbs with. Oohh yeah
awesome ❤❤👌👌
Oii oiii thank you 🤙🏼
I just noticed the differences in sound from the -229 vs, the typical -220 F-100.
Right O Thanks Man!
Oii oiii 🤙🏼
Right On keep them videos coming
@@tomdarco2223
Shockwave rings visible in the blue flame! Doesn't get better than this...
Thank you very much
Ted- fantastic video dude!! The afterburner flames at dusk are a sight to behold! I'm somewhat surprised the pilots kept the burners lit for so long! Is it a "safety" thing? As in, get the plane as high as possible above the ground in case of engine failure, so the jet has a chance to limp back to base single-engined.,
The ONLY thing no video can convey to the viewer is the absolute thunderous roar of those 2 engines in full afterburner. Sure, we all know these planes are loud during takeoff, but the tv or outboard speakers simply can't reproduce the engine roar to do them justice; perhaps an IMAX sound system would be fairly decent.
Keep up the good work Ted.
Thank you very much
Cool beans 🤟🏻
Oohhh yeah
ah just coming back to this video again. im still astonished thats a 52yr old air frame design and its still only getting better. imagine if we was flying a military Wright model A in 60s thats the equivalent in terms of age.bonkers
The F15 is a magnificent aircraft
It’s going to good and busy I think
Mate, I loved that video. F15s against the sunset background. Absolutely beautiful and a pleasure to watch. I bet it was cold?
Oiii oiii Steve 🤙🏼 couldn’t believe the sky and the request for quick climbs. Yes it was cold but my word was it forgotten about
I wonder if they will replace the Strike Eagle with the F-15EX Eagle Two. I believe it has even more advanced ground attack capability than the Strike Eagle.
this video reminds me of the scene from TomGun well done Nikos to get that shot
Ooohhh yeah

Thank you so much. We didn’t take any stills but even pausing the video scenes, they still look great
Damn.
Wow! Zoom baby.....
Oohhh yeah
Absolutely beautiful!
Oii oiii thank you 🤙🏼🌅
Was this taken on QCF? That was a lovely capture!!!!
It was but after the stream as a lovely surprise
That's an impressive climb rate! I was curious about the number 2 plane that came out at 1:50. The port air intake was wide open, which almost made it look like the plane was leaning a bit. And there were maintainers waiting when it got to the parking stand.
This F15 had just come from hot-pitting so this is why the air intake looks this way, so the ground crew will do the checks on this before departure
that engine was actually off and not running, you(I) could hear them restarting it, them being EOR(end of runway) crew.... I used to crew these aircraft from 96-98
This is probably some of the best take off footage I've ever seen, anywhere, truely beautiful.
Oiii oiii thank you so much for your kind words. Well this is the first time we’ve seen quick climbs at dusk and with a beautiful sky. Thank you
