the mirroring in this movie is quite literal. when johnny was scrubbing his dad, it mirrored gheorge scrubbing the lamb with hay to try and revive it. it was johnny's turn to revive a fatherly relationship. when his dad thanked him, it was a symbolic transfer of power from dad to johnny. this film is beautiful.

I think Johnny just didn't feel worthy of love until Gheorghe came along. His mum abandoned him at an early age, his dad & gran aren't obviously affectionate. He just doesn't know what a cuddle is until the night in the barn, then he's like a starving child at a buffet. I love this film.

Yes, that is what I was thinking. Both Johnny's father and nan already found out he was gay, and nan said Gheorge was a 'good lad' and father knew he was crucial to his son's happiness and Gheorge was a good farmer. I think they processed this when Johnny was gone to get Gheorge back and it was likely not so difficult to get them to welcome Gheorge into the family.

She's old, he's very sick, and the farm barely stands still. If the man of the house wants a man, there's nothing they can do about it. And everyone is ok with that.

The parallels are easy; it's obvious why ppl dubbed this the British "Brokeback." That description does this film a serious disservice. For me, Brokeback was primarily made for a straight audience in that its intended message was for the straights. I believe this film, however, was made for a rural, queer audience. It exemplifies to the isolated queers out there that you don't necessarily have to reside in the city (or abandon the farm) to have a fulfilled life.

I regard to the ending: Yes, the nan and the dad will absolutely be ok with them being together.
    - That's what the whole scene with nan giving John the new address of Gheorge was about even after she realized the nature of their relationship by finding the used condom.
    - That's also what this whole conversation between the dad and John was about, John stating that he not just has to get Gheorge back but actually wants him back, that getting Gheorge would make him happy, and the dad giving John the virtual thumbs up to this subtle coming out by stating that he "did good".
    - That's what the whole getting rid of the Caravan and going into the family home together is about.

  • @peerah

Awesome analysis! A few of my thoughts - 1. Lamb skin = sweater/jumper 2. Seasoning food = Gheorghe teaches Johnny to enjoy life/love. Notice how he just inhales his food and really not caring about how it tastes? 3. Gheorghe leaves the jumper on purpose. That man comes with just one bag. No way he would have forgotten to take it. This jumper reminds him of Johnny so he leaves it 4. Nan is crying more about the fate of her son than anything else. 5. Johnny must have had boy issues before. This is not the first time he’s caught having sex with a man. It’s such a small town and there is no way that the fam hasn’t heard about him screwing around with guys. He’s also been out to his friends for a long time. Nan says “just so you’re clear he’s here to work” which means that her concern is not able his sexuality but the practicality of it all. Him being gay is not a secret, they just don’t talk about it. 5. The use of color is so deliberate. Red or bungundy only appears when good things are about to happen: jumper, the jacket Johnny wears when pursuing the love of this life, the red letters on the side of the bus. 6. He screws around with the twink because of a few things - he’s drunk, he just had a conversation that forced him to make big decisions about how to run the farm and what this relationship is going to look like if Gheorghe stays. He just wants to brush those aside and the blowjob (I think based on the position of the the feet) in the bathroom stall is just a distraction that Johnny needs. 7. I read that farmers almost never travel. The fact that Johnny is out to get Gheorghe is a big deal and he even says so. This is him going out of this way (so he thinks) to find gheorghe and get him to come back. 8. The nudity is awesome and necessary. People (straight or gay) just dont put their clothes on immediately after sex. The post coital talk also doesn’t usually involve anything sexual, which is how it’s depicted here. 9. I love the second sex scene between Johnny and Gheorghe. Johnny kisses someone literally for the first time and once he knows how it feels he cannot get enough of it. Some people say that they’re not doing anything besides holding and touching each other, but that’s exactly what Johnny needs! He needs the intimacy that physical contact provides. He needs it so much it’s almost like he was drowning and gasping for air. And of course they probably have proper sex afterwards. 10. I think Johnny bottoms for Gheorghe. The aggressive topping we see early on is just for show. 11. I cry my eye out throughout the last few minutes, starting from when Johnny says “I don’t want to be a f*** up anymore” and he tears up. And kudos to Josh for the well orchestrated single tear coming down his face.

I am a huge gay film aficionado. I am a retired clinical psychologist and was in the closet until I was in my late 50”s. When I saw this movie the first time, I thought it was just “ok.” Then I had a sense that I didn’t pay enough attention in my initial viewing. I liked the movie 100% better the second time, and it went to #5 on my all-time list. It is, after the third viewing, my #1 movie-- mainly because I (finally) grasped the theme of pure love coming through. The scene at the end when he cries (which he NEVER does) and says through tears “I don’t want to be a fuckup anymore” moved me to weep myself. It is a beautiful love story. In regard to someone like Johnny (crude and ignorant as to the ways of love) falls in love, it reminds me of a part of a song by the Supremes that says “Whacha gonna do, oh yeah, when love gets a hold-- a HOLD on you.”

Regarding Nan's reaction of crying into the towel - I completely agree that the film makers brilliantly left no explanation as to what she is actually crying about. As the parent of 2 queer children, I can confirm there are A LOT of aspects of your child coming out to you that can generate sadness that have very little to do with your own personal acceptance of their non-heteronormativity. For me (and my wife; we have discussed this extensively), it is knowing that they will have obstacles and barriers that non-queer people don't have to deal with, and you want them to be true to themselves, but you don't want them to get hurt. It's very hard.

Hey guys, great you guys reacted to this movie even in 2021. However, I got a different perspective in few of your reactions. Before I continue with the my explanations, i feel this movie is one of the greatest gay movies of all times. This movie came out the same year than "Call me by your name" but for me this movie rates a bit higher than Call me by. I had the privilege to see this movie in the Castro Theater in San Francisco where the director and those 2 actors were present for Q&A afterwards. The theater literally exploded. In any case, these are my interpretations of certain scences that I differ from yours:
    1) The baby sheep got acepted by the "mother" not becuase the baby got a disguise but I believe the "skin" that was put on him/her was the skin of the real baby of the mother who just died the night before. This indeed was a disguise but there is a real "farm" fact behind it.This baby sheep was an orphan resucitaded by Giorgi and it seems, sheeps won't take of other baby sheeps unless it is their own. So the scent of the "skin" was the scent of the dead baby sheep...
    2) I believe that the grandmother took the comdom scence as his grandson coming out and she took it literally as just that. "My grandson had just sex with another man" and that is how in her family (grandmother, father and grandsome) show (or lack of) emotions. I believe she cried while smelling the pijama of her son (father) who was in the hospital almost dying. She could have thought what can she and her grandson do if the son/dad dies. Remember, it was her who give her grandson the address and phone of Giorgi in Romania. So, she completely understood her grandson was in love with Giorgi and she help him to find him. There was no need of discussion or drama. It is just the fact.
    3) The scene of the father and son where the son said, "this is how it is, I'm going to bring him back but the father needed to relisquished the farm to him and trust him that they both will run the farm differently". The father accepted his conditions by confirming that Girogi make Josh happy. That was the coming out from Josh and acceptance from the father. Few words and no fuss about it.
    4) I take the trailer leaving the property scene as "we won't need to hire anybody else to help us with this farm". We are encharged now, and to me, the happy ending of this story is that we are going to be a couple now, we are taking the responsability to run this farm and we all will be living together under "their house" now, including dad and grandmother.
    5) Finally, what this movie shows to me, as you guys noticed, was the progress of Josh from an unhappy, insecure, bitter and angry individual to a loving, vulnerable, and in-love character. That last scene of Josh saying that he was trying to open up and admitting that he needed Giorgi to be back with him broke me to tears. Josh's tear rolling down his chin destroyed me. I couldn't believe the performance of those 2 straight actors and the freaking chemistry they had to convincinly pull these emotions up. Yes, the same feeling that I had in "Brockback mountains", the actors made me believe that they were in love with each other and in 2005, this movie was huge at the time. 2 straight acting cowboys couldn't fight their feelings for each other. Straight people couldn't say or argue that they "chose" to be gay. They did everything they could to get ride of those feelings but couldn't.
Anyway, Sorry for the long text and great reaction....

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts. We think that’s one of the amazing qualities about this film: the ability for the audience to interpret the same scene in different ways and project some of their feelings and experiences onto the scene - probably also a result of the phenomenal acting. And yes! Using lamb skins in that way is a common technique in livestock farming when the ewe rejects one of their lambs. Really nice to see some factual depictions of farm life too to really sell the setting and the movie :)

Started from your Heartstopper videos and ended up here. It’s a very beautiful film and love your commentaries.
I think the best thing this film has done is to reveal that for queer people, who lived in a rather conservative society or time and had no exposure to queer romance, we/they are lacking of the ability to love. Because we never learned how to express, how to take, or even how to relate. This film is a journey of Joshua’s character to gain the ability to love. I feel like it’s talking to me. I’m still struggling with how to express my love to someone, and I’m already 35 years old. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to.
And in contrast of Heartstopper, we know how important the representation is for the young people, and wish them won’t repeat what we have been through.

I think you got this absolutely wrong. It's not a film about coming out to anyone. His dad and his grandmother know and have known from the start that he's gay.But this is a family where feelings are never talked about. The father, the grandmother are both afraid that if they let themselves feel and be "soft", the strength they need in their tough daily lives would leave them. So it is a film about opening up about feelings, allowing oneself to be tender. The tenderest moment for his gran is when she gives him Gheorghe's address. It's the only way she can say "I understand and I accept" without actually saying the words.
I have been in such a situation, where I was just accepted, with my boyfriend, in a rural setting, by a rural family who could never have spoken the word "gay", but accepted that we were together and loved each other.

I didn't interpret everything the same as both of you.
But i will say that Deirdre was ironing Martin's pyjama's and I think that she was worried about his future and that if Johnny left what would become of the farm.
Johnny is pretty much out in the community, the thing is though he's not part of the community, he doesn't care what anyone thinks. So his family do know.
Also when Deirdre says "Like your father" it could be interpreted that Martin is gay as well but the weight of the farm from his ancestors and the time in which he lived made him give up everything he was.

    • @mrj.kottari8453

I don't think Martin is gay/bi but that nana's comment relates to how John is too stubborn and hard-headed like his father and doesn't see the necessity to modernise the farm (before Gheorghe convinces him to).
If Martin was closeted gay, he would've had more positive attitude towards John and Gheorghe's relationship right away when he realized what's going on.

I think "Like your Farther" warns Johns that, just like John's mother left John's father, and how, the father, wasn't able to "manage" with the loneliness, and stress of farm life, John was heading in the same direction with Gheorghe leaving.

@@justtheusualcrazy2022 I agree with you. Johnny was obviously suffering from his mother's departure from his life, maybe even blaming his father for this. He got to the stage where he couldn't accept closeness as he had been betrayed and disappointed before. He wasn't going to trust anyone with his feelings. This was one of the central themes of the movie, and seeing his painful progression towards softening his hard exterior was very moving.

💓💕💞I've seen watched this film dozens of times. I, in fact, love it so much, that I've literally analyzed scenes, piece by piece. Due to the fact I'm from the United States and also a "City" guy, I wanted to interpret some of the northern, Yorkshire, U.K. lingo this film uses a bit, so that I could better understand more of the conversations. [For example... We "here in the U.S." don't call our grandmothers "Nan", and due to this fact, I thought the grandma character was actually the 2nd wife and step-mother of Johnny until my research showed me differently.] However, while analyzing the film several times, I also eventually came to the conclusion that Johnny's sexuality wasn't necessarily a secret to the town, or even to his family [at least his father..., but not so sure if the grandma ever knew, or excepted it as true if she did ever know.] I simply think that it was an unspoken rule that they didn't discuss it, which I love, because it made the film so much more current and true to today's way of doing things in most of our Westernized countries. I first came this conclusion when Johnny was having the conversation outside the bar [pub] with a former female high-schoolmate that had returned home for a weekend away from college. The female tries to introduce Johnny to one of her male college buddies that apparently traveled up to the Yorkshire area with her for vacation. This tells me, as the viewer, that Johnny's old school buddies had already "clocked Johnny's T" back in high school, and kinda didn't care about it either way.
Did anyone else get that concept???🤔

I wondered if the grandmother's response came from her discovery putting her grandson's previous behaviour into context: he was unhappy and she didn't, in a relatively uncommunicative environment, know why, or indeed have the means or power to ask.
In their context, one might reasonably expect that all support would come from within the family, but, perhaps because of apparent losses and illness, they seem to live in self-enforced personal isolation, none of them, perhaps, wanting to let the side down or to put their own 'trivial' feelings ahead of greater tragedy.
Her emotional response, for me, thus sat in the wider context of her likely experience of his unhappiness, his perceived rejection of her, and her likely response to his behaviours which she couldn't express.
She'd also just have realised that her grandson's highly self-destructive behaviour stemmed from his inability to simply share something about himself with those closest to him, and that her own behaviour, of not expressing her feelings, and, moreover, allowing those around her to do the same, despite her matriarchal position, perhaps contributed significantly to that.
Additionally, in the preceeding scenes his character's changed, but her presumed relief at his more immediate happiness, which, given the context, could be significant, might, at that point, be tempered both by her reticence and fears about his sexuality, and what that meant: would his good mood preceed further isolation, tragedy and loss.

This is a gorgeous film with a happy, very satisfying ending. They got rid of the caravan because it was where the temporary help would stay but now they're a couple and Gheorghe has moved into Johnny's bedroom.I do believe Johnny came out to his dad in the hillside scene. Johnny emphatically states, "I'm gonna go get him" followed by "I wanna go get him" was him declaring, "That's how much this man means to me" and the dad in his own way gave his blessing. I also think this movie deserves a sequel where a few years later, we find that Johnny's dad has passed, his nan has moved into town and finally living a happy life and Johnny and Gheorghe are a solid couple who have turned the sheep farm into a success because their organic sheep milk products are a hit. Johnny proposes to Gheorghe and he has to confess that he's already married.... to a woman in Romania who agreed to be his cover. He travels back to his homeland to get a divorce and Johnny is surprised when Gheorghe returns - with his wife. It turns out she desperately wants to get out of Romania that she won't agree to a divorce until she's set up with a new one in God's Own Country. She knows he's gay, so she's not hoping to hold onto him, she just sees the opportunity to find a better future. She's not ruthless or a bitch, in fact she and Johnny get on very well but she wants what she wants, which can also include an unexpected romance with another woman.

At 8:29. You also missed the other layer of symbolism here--the lamb and the good shepherd (which defines Georghe in this scene--he definitely knows how to rear lambs and sheep) are both traditional symbols of Jesus Christ. So Georghe here is like a Christ-like symbol, who came to this farm to rescue Johnny from loneliness and despair, to give him hope for a better, more fulfilled life. Georghe also comes from the east, very much the land of Christ in relation to England. I thought you were going there, along with how this ties to the title "God's Own Country." You can't have God in the title of the movie without some metaphor representing Jesus Christ. LOL.

Such a good movie, and I loved hearing your opinions! It's such a great movie with such good representation and keeps things fairly real, with no cliche happy ending, not magic fix-all from them being together. Love everything about this movie ❤️

It doesn't need a continuation for me. What touched me in the film was the father's reconciliation and approval, something I tried with mine and failed. It wasn't for sexuality, I'm not gay, it was for another reason. I did my part, I asked him for forgiveness, but I didn't get it. I move forward with my life...

i thought his family kinda knew he was gay.. also his friend saying she brought a guy who "is fun like he used to be", makes it not seem like he is very closeted. his grandma said that the romanian guy was there "just to work" after finding the rubber. and the tone made it seem like it was not the first conversation. the grandma crying seemed like overwhelmed by her son being so sick, and maybe also the thought of the grandsons attitude and/or sexuality. the dad asking if it would make him happy, then saying good, did not seem like a coming out scene, but maybe i misinterpret it. im from one of the most lgbt accepting countries, so i know situations when just people are in sort of denial, and having a toxic lifystyle, but most people in their life are accepting of it

Ive stumbled upon your channel and absolutely fell in love with it - you make me laugh so much! I'm catching up on things I haven't seen from the ones you reacted to and absolutely loved this one so thank you bringing it up to my attention. I'm not queer but been on a journey with lgbtq+ media lately - it's good to get to see other perspectives but I also feel like topics related to shame and finding who you are and how tobe true to yourself are quite universal and something I personally struggled a lot even though in my case it's not related to sexual orientation.
Thanks again for your videos and I hope you'll keep them coming!

Love your views something to consider, is that his father and Gran always knew he was gay. They didn't care that he was gay they were focussed on make the farm work, and probably angry that they couldn't give him the life he wanted but also showing him that he could have a life here. Also when the Gran cries I think it doesn't have anything to do with him being gay but more about the fact her son has just had a stroke and her grandson could potentially run off and leave her alone to look after every thing. So when he actually sticks around and start putting effort into the farm she knows that he is sad and missing something and she does want him to be happy. Hence giving him the address.

You’re both intelligent and very charming so I subscribed. I want to say it like a great piece of art and this is great out there is nothing placed here by accident. And as you proceeded to describe the movie and seem to come over you as well. I had wanted to see this film since it came out and only sought the other day here in 2022. I wrote a friend of mine in Florida and told him that it was the British Brokeback Mountain and done better. I told him it might be one of the best things I have ever seen committed to film. I have seen the movie twice and will see it again in a month or two. I will go back and watch some of your other reviews. I wanted to say cheers And good luck and I will watch for you again.

Geographical isolation is to a large extent a myth. I was brought up in a small mining village in the middle of Nottinghamshire. Not exactly the gay capital of the UK! But it didn't stop me coming out at 14 (in 1975). And that was without internet, mobile phones, or any out characters on TV (unless you count Mr Humphries or Larry Grayson).

I think the lamb skin has a double meaning here, not just disguise but also protection (not literally used as a "lambskin" aka condom, though that referral is probably not just a coincidence).

  • @chrisboot2468
    @chrisboot2468 3 года назад +3

Interesting that you separate "gay life" from other things. Surely the main story of the film is someone allowing themselves be open to changes and new experiences. Allowing themselves to fall in love. The fact that they are gay men is marvellous, but surely it is just the story of a single person becoming open to life's possibilities, through the love of another person.

I don't know, there's a scene in "boys" the movie, that main characters r coming back from camp and one put his head on the othe one's shoulder, can we say they've copied it from this movie?! I think brokback mountain and GOC r totally 2 different movie and it's not fair to compare it to another movie saying it's a version of that in modern life

  • @spennierogers4062

I truly resonate with the points you guys raised about coming out and the added pressure of it. It is however rather backwards in my case. I was lucky to be raised in a family that was indifferent to sexual orientation, I do feel, when looking at the struggles of others in the lgbtq comunity, that I was kind of robbed of the experience of coming out and it being a big relevant point in my life. This seems rather petty, but I've noticed that I tend not to celebrate or be proud of my sexuality, I see it as kind of irrelevant, which is quite sad really. The dramas in life are what make us strong.

I think when they talk about the family's reaction it spot on. Some parent's who are blindsided are thinking; omg are they going to be able to get married/have kids/have the family I wanted for them/will this hurt their social life or career/will people turn on them/how did I miss it/will our church accept them/will god forgive them and so many things that amount to worry and concern for your child and not at all shame and disappointment in them. On the face those two things can look similar.

I think Johnny was already out to his friends and family, but it was just something they never spoke about. Like the friend at the pub seemed to know, as to me it seemed she wanted to set him up. And I think his dad knew as you can see from his reaction to seeing Johnny and Gheorghe messing around on the tractor. And even though Johnny waits to kiss Gheorghe until his nan leaves the room, he doesn't seem to think it's a big deal to have him stay the night in his room, it's Gheorghe who wants to stay in the caravan. I think this is just not something they speak about, like it doesn't seem they speak about anything other than the farm and it's quite obvious that Johnny did not get a lot of (physical) affection growing up and does not really know how to love somebody or let himself be loved.
    Anyway, just my two cents..
I adore this movie though and have watched it many times and loved hearing your takes on some of it.

So, I've now watched this review in full. It was a pleasure, to a point. I think you give a very good view and reflection on John and I think it's because you focus on him as you. But it should be obvious that this extraodinary film has TWO let's say points to make, YOU and THE OTHER and you don't choose to ignore the other, you simply didn't even SEE him. Hello! there's a Romanian there. Surprise!. I don't know if I should claim you're xenophobic because you simply couldn't care less. I suppose it's the English insulation. But I'd suggest that you take another look at this movie and TRY to see THE OTHER, he's full of life, and very atractive. Come on guys, you're gay, you had to notice. Yes, I know.... the smell !, but you didn't seem to object to John's. Of course the added merit here is the social side but it totally escaped your attention. So, my rating for this is a 5 for John's representation and a nul for your total disregard of "the other". Total 5. I now dread a little to watch your CMBYN review. An American Jew, a cosmopolitan Jewish family speaking French and Italian, and all of them in such a far away place from England as Italy...? LOL

Thanks for your comment and for taking the time to watch our review! Absolutely right that there are of course two characters and two journeys being represented here. When we filmed this, we did comment on the fact that we don’t know much about Gheorghe’s own journey and what stage he might be at. Unfortunately we had to cut it because the video was really long already. We’ll try to do better to comment on the narrative of all the queer characters and their relationships in the future. As you can appreciate, we’re always tight on time because there is just so much to talk about!
