    It doesn't bother me that a straight actor played a gay character because it is acting. But it is funny, I saw The Idea of Us and for a split second I thought...that is Henry and he should be with Alex. LOL I thought that because of the power of Red White and Royal Blue. I am happy that straight actors are comfortable with playing gay characters! And sadly yes, I think if an actor comes out gay, it limits his or her roles.

  • @dawnjohnson4869
    @dawnjohnson4869 23 дня назад +24

    I don't agree that his acting choices are as calculated as you posit, beyond simply choosing interesting characters to play. I don't imagine him thinking, "Hmmm, time to go gay again..." Telling more nuanced, honest, powerful, funny, exciting queer stories is what's important to me, whether the actor is queer or not.

      @@satireskeptic6787 I get that. I'd solidly place Handsome Devil, RWRB, and Mary & George under "queer cinema." Those are definitely roles that grabbed attention. I became a fan of his after viewing RWRB, then went back to view everything else he'd done prior. I'm a fan now and look forward to seeing whatever he wants to take on. With his extraordinary talent, he would've got to fame sooner or later. It just so happened that he got cast gay roles and got famous on this one gay role in Red White and Royal Blue which had a very well-written script based on a best-seller. Other actors have gotten gay roles too but they didn't necessarily get famous. Do you remember all the other male actors who played those male courtesans of King James in Mary & George? Do you remember who played Earl of Somerset, the first male courtesan that Nicholas Galitzine's role George bumped off? He got a lot of screen time too and he's not too bad in acting either. Exactly my point. Nicholas Galitzine got famous fair and square and no controversy.

      Well it depends he became known because of playing gay royals (I.E Red White and Royal Blue) and he did many others. When the industry type casts you it is hard to break out of it especially if you lean into it like he does. Not saying its wrong just interesting.

      @@satireskeptic6787 No he became known due to a very well-written romantic comedy with a heart-warming love story in which he just happened to play a gay character. Script is everything. He's played quite a few gay/bi roles before Red White and Royal Blue but he didn't become known? And he would've become known for playing a heterosexual character in the movie "The Idea of You" if that movie had come out first before Red White and Royal Blue judging by the success of the movie but it came out after Red White and Royal Blue so now we would never know. And it's the director of Mary & George who approached Nicholas for the role of George not the other way around so he's hardly "leaning into it". And I honestly feel he's actually trying to get away from gay roles to avoid being typecast with them. He does not play any gay roles in his two upcoming projects "Three Bags Full" (another movie with a great story which I am really looking forward to seeing) and Master of Universe. Let's see how well he fares.

    Straight actors can play a gay character (Thank you Heath Ledger for Ennis Del Mar), the point is not here. At the begining, the "queer actor for queer role" was to adress :
    - The poor quality of gay characters in the industry,
    - The fact that openly queer actors could'nt get major roles, especially in Rom Com because they were not straight
    To be honnest, i'm not confortable with this claim. It could be use by producers in the other side to only give major roles to straight actors, and it does not provide a solution for non openly LGBT actors.
    Regarding Nicholas Galitzine case, he is a great storyteller, and i like his performances, regardless his sexual orientation

    I wanted to be a marriage and family therapist. There was several married women who told me that me as a single woman wouldn't make a bad marriage counselor. I had to put them in their place. I just said that the right counselor barely says anything during a session. They take therapy models and research to guide the clients. You don't need to be married to understand how a marriage works. Then just to be petty, i said that I learned from the mistakes of people like them to better help my clients.

    Galitizine is not a great actor, he is OK at most, and obviously without his looks he would be, ...how to put it mildly.... by far less known than he actually is. The fact that he immediately got a role at his first audition and afterwards struggled should ring a bell. Especially "Red, white and royal blue" is a rather mediocre movie (to say the least), which survives on looks, funny moments, and by depicting closeted gay characters in a comical but nonetheless slapstick-like, very straight way (there is practically nothing gay in the movie except the fact that both are men, and the level of acceptance they enjoy can only be found in fairy tales). So yes, nothing new, surprising or advanced there. Numerous unknown Thai, Korean, and Japanese BL movies and series feature actors with considerably better talents (and, do keep in mind) many of them are straight.
    If you want to see Hollywood-star straight actors (and I mean great actors) who did not play gay characters in order to become famous, but rather despite being famous, watch "Tom Hanks in "Philadelphia", Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze, and John Leguizamo in "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar", Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce in "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert", Hugh Grant and Rupert Graves in "Maurice", Cate Blanchett in "Carol and Tár", Jake Gyllenhaal in "Brokeback Mountain", Benedict Cumberbatch in "The power of dog", Colin Firth in "A single man", Ewan McGregor in "I Love You Phillip Morris", Stanley Tucci in "Devil wears Prada" and...oh well ... shall I continue?
