Thanks guts! Just to add to the story, Pena Palace was the brainchild of King Fernando II, who was in reality King Consort Ferdinand Saxe-Coburg-Gotha...and he was German. Pena palace was modelled on other German Romantic castles, so is pretty unique in Portugal!

You guys are just making my idea of living in Portugal in a few years seem like a really really solid idea. Not really a sucker for follies but love the look of those buildings.

I'm not native from Portugal, my education was Anglo Saxonic and tea time isn't a Portuguese tradition, it's a British thing but the story is correct, it was a Portuguese woman that brought loads of tea to Britain. The high tea was introduced by Anna - Maria Stanhope, the Duchess of Bedford that to deal with the "sinking time"= tea time, because the time between breakfast and dinner was ( and still is) too long. I am Portuguese but not native from here, I grew up in South Africa and Scotland, when I noticed I was living in Portugal. Like I said before it's really awesome to get to know a country like you two are doing, and for God sack it's a small but very rich country in culture and food. Keep enjoying the life.

In fact, Sintra is linked to my family by the connection to the King of Portugal in that time close to 300 years. My family had two coats of arms, which distinguished the families of that time, and these coats of arms are in a room in a palace in Sintra.

Loved, loved Sintra. My daughter and I spent 2 nts. there last May, but we could have spent 2/3 more; however, we had to head to Spain to do the French Camino, which was also an amazing experience. We couldn't afford Palacio Tivoli, but stayed at Chalet Saudade in the superior suite. It had a nice balcony with fantastic views. Can't wait to go back. ❤
Btw. Loving all your adventures. 😊
