They want to hold back my kindergartener!

  • I don’t think I knew this was a problem until I got three separate messages about kindergarteners being threatened with failing because they couldn’t read. Here’s what I suggest you do. First, try to prevent it by looking at your state law, and consider dodging by homeschooling. Then, set yourself of a course to learn how children learn to read, so you can teach your child yourself. The process should take about 90 days, start by watching my free course from start to finish!

    Hi! This video is an introduction into what to do if your 5 or 6 year old kindergartener cannot read. The first step of they are in school is to prevent the retention by some simple legal maneuvers. There’s a lot of info out there from people against retention that can help you. But in the meantime of course, you need to dedicate 90 days to teaching your child to read. There’s no way I can explain how to do this in one video, so I recorded a course that will explain everything thoroughly. This is the type of thing that I wish I had as a teacher. Let me know if you guys have any questions or concerns that you want me to address in the course.
    Over the next few weeks you’ll see me posting those course videos as well as some blogs I’ve been meaning to post for a while now.

    Hello,
    I like that you are informing parents of their rights. I’m a first grade teacher and having retention conversations are difficult. The problem is most parents that I see don’t prioritize teaching or reinforcing what has been taught at home. We send home homework and it doesn’t get completed. They don’t want retention, but they don’t prioritize learning how to read at home.If you have resources that parents can learn to teach at home, that’s awesome. I will absolutely share them.

    I can attest to this I moved my family from another state, my son was going into the 11th grade and his previous school was just low quality and the new school was low quality so they didn’t know what or how to handle him bcuz they felt he was waaaaay behind. & he was miserable so I pulled him out, homeschooled him and he graduated with all A’s the following year bcuz the learning was at his own pace & it allowed him to catch up. All in all I got to see my first born walk down the aisle with his high school diploma!

      Teaching reading has so many parts. Don't feel overwhelmed. That's literally what I help teachers and parents with. So there are controllables and uncontrollables in this situation. Although we cannot control the expectations of the curriculum and standards, we can control how we go about it and support our children. Think of ways to teach smarter and not harder.

      Great point. Did you know that only 60% of children enter the classroom "not ready" for the kindergarten standards. It shocks me! We have to help them from birth on. And it doesn't have to be this super stressful process that we often make it.

    Thank you SO much. This is so reassuring. My autistic 7 year old daughter is struggling to learn to read, and it's obvious she's experiencing learning difficulties on top of learning a new language (she's in French as a second language) but where we live, her teacher is only able to tell us she's struggling, her pediatrician apparently isn't allowed to diagnose her with ADHD while it's clear she's living with it, and she's on a year-long waiting list to be diagnosed with learning disabilities, and I'm legally not allowed to homeschool her so this is all stuff I'm trying to teach her at home after school.
    Your clear, calm advice makes this all seem so much more manageable.

    • @MericiaTheWellnessSpeaker

      I would read a lot of fun and exciting books to her and be animated. I would also, as I'm.reading let her see the words; giant print would be lovely also. I would have her read the title with me and let her point. No pressure on her. I would go to the library every week and make the trip to the library and check out exciting and unique books so that reading is taught to be fun and not a task. And one day, it will click. Maybe reading to her twice or three times a day, but books she would enjoy may help. Doing this will help lessen the pressure and stress for you both. If your child needs movement, I will use most of the senses when reading (touch, seeing, hearing, moving). Every child learns differently and at a different pace.
      Check out the book Better Late than Early from the library for yourself; very informative.
      If you think she has ADHD, diet and vitamin deficiency play a considerable role. Xoxo

    My daughter has the same problem for my grandson in Mississippi. He also wasn’t sounding out words but memorizing words. They wanted to keep him behind in kindergarten. We refuse because in MS, it’s up to the parent to let a teacher hold him back. He then goes to first grade and his new teacher says he was doing well the first few weeks then she was repeating the same words as the kindergarten teacher. My grand child mentioned he saw his kindergarten teacher, she waved at him as she talked to his new teacher. Then we start hearing negative stuff from his new teacher, and said he should return to kindergarten. We then decided to pull him out of school and homeschool him. He is doing so much better and sounding out words. I’ve been watching your videos to help him further.

So you can have have your interactive read alouds run on autopilot. This will drastically help him with comprehension. Then, set time to play play fun sight word games to reinforce what he's already learned.

My grandson is on the high functioning autism spectrum and we are going through lengths to make sure we give him the absolute best head start in life. He knows and does so much already. Iam sure teaching him to read will be challenging but we are up for it. We have you close just in case. Great video

    Currently teaching my son at home to read. I feel his school doesn't send home enough homework. It's sad because lots of parents leave it up to the school and they are failing our kids. I started before my son could walk. By the time he did start public school his teachers were so impressed with him being a first time student. I slacked off a little when he started but am back on it because I don't want him falling behind. Because they definitely will hold your child back. I am just wondering what is considered "reading" for this age. My son can read most 3 letter words and some 4 letter words. But what is considered reading ar 5 years old? Like should he be able to read any grade level book?

      Hi! I would say most places want Kinders to leave reading on a level c or d. I'm happy if my kids can read a level a fluently when they leave. I would NEVER hold back a kid for not reading though. Retaining students should be for other developmental milestones and other indicators, I have never retained a child.

      MAN! We were just talking about this topic on one of my recent Saturday Lives. The back and forth between parents and teachers often becomes a blame game and it needs to be a partnership because both parties are needed.
      In regards to your son, it's really based on challenging him. If he's a 5 year old in pre-k, then he is probably ahead of other children his age, but you want to keep challenging him. If he's 5 and in Kindergarten, then the goal is to start reading simple sentences. I actually have a kindergarten - fifth grade readiness checklist that's free. Would that help you so you would know what is actually expected out of him?

      @honestyb2754 2 года назад

      Please, how do you mean?

    • @successfulchildren
      @successfulchildren 2 года назад +2

      @Honesty B here is an example.
      Two children were born 2021: one on New Year's Day; one on New Year's Eve.
      At this writing, almost March 1st 2022, the child born in January is already over a year old. Depending on the level of care, human interaction, and other activities that enhance brain development (having been read books, being put to bed to Mozart - or other classical music, and being spoken to like an adult versus like a baby with the "goo-goo, gaga") this 14 month old can walk, talk and has had a head start in language development.
      Also at this writing, the child born in December is nearly 2 months old. This child is given the exact same level of care as the 14month old, yet cannot yet walk or talk. Although this child has a head start in language development, a 2 month old does not have the brain development of a 14 month old; the part of the year in which they were born makes a huge developmental difference in what they can achieve.
      This is why children born between January and March perform better academically than children in their class who were born between September and December. This is also why it is best to allow children born latter in the year to begin first grade at age 7 as opposed to age 6, especially , when children between the ages 7-12 are at a crossroads in their development where they learn to feel either competent or inferior.

Does anyone know the retention laws in Texas?? If so please let me know if I have a say as his parent to stop them from making him re do kindergarten. Help im stressing everyday about this. His teacher said all he needs is to be on level B to be able to pass to 1st grade. And im running out of time with only 6 weeks left before re testing him.

    Can you make a video about TK.
    Do you think TK is needed?
    My daughter is born august 9,2017 and her birthday should of been past the September 2 cut off for TK. So she does not qualify for TK. My other two kids did TK and I’m wondering if you think I should fight for her to be in TK
    I’m in California

    Hello Akeeba! My daughter and I moved to NY in January 21 2022 from Florida and yesterday we had our first parent teacher conference in her new school here in NY and the teacher suggested that my daughter could be staying in kindergarten. Because she is not in the same label as her classmates. (Florida school system is not good at all and I just learned that the hard way) I am really worried because my first lenguage is Spanish so my daughter speaks English and Spanish but it’s harder to be 100% fluent in both lenguages! but I’ll try my best to get her catch up! Thanks for your videos!

    I'm in Florida smh. It's frustrating because it makes you feel like a bad parent. And my son is good with everything else it's just sight words reading and putting the sounds with the letters to blend the words.. uuggghhhhh

    My son was homeschooled then I placed him in school in January. He was very quiet and shy in school and now his school is recommending I have him repeat Kindergarten for social skills. However academically he's doing well. Any suggestions?

    • @AkeebaMaze
      @AkeebaMaze  2 года назад +2

      Well being shy and quiet doesn’t mean he should repeat. Aren’t there other shy kids in the class? I would ask what specific behaviors he does or doesn’t do that would make them say that. Doing another year of kindergarten is not going to change his personality.
      I think you can tell for yourself - if he’s a young kindergartener, like he is still 5, and YOU think he’s still young for first grade, then sure have him do K again.
      Also, there’s still 6 months until first grade starts. I would think about if six months would help him find whatever skills they are saying he’s missing.
      The kindergarten social objectives don’t say anything about shyness, they are more about whether a child can listen, respond to questions, and play nicely with others. If you don’t want him to repeat you can ask for a copy of the social standards and specific documentation of how he is not meeting them.
      If you’re unsure you can sit in on a class session and see for yourself if you want him to repeat. Hope this helps!

    What if a child is in 3rd grade and still can’t read? My daughter just got a dyslexia diagnosis. There is no parent training so that we know how to help teach her. It’s just frustration at home and they say they’ll handle it at school. There was also the question of auditory processing or some kind of processing disorder since her processing time is very low. How can we learn to support her at home?

    • @AkeebaMaze
      @AkeebaMaze  2 года назад +3

      No problem, that’s most kids in American schools! I taught third grade and only a few of the children could read well. So there are resources to help. From what I’ve read, the course that I am coming out with, it’s the same for children with dyslexia. You just might have to have a higher number of times you need to repeat the information. But I’ll check with my friend who is a reading coach for children with dyslexia.
      But I do know they definitely should’ve gave you some resources!

    My daughter's assessment came back last week. She is in 1st. They say she is below benchmark. I believe this is due to the fact that she only had half a year of in person instruction for PreK and Kinder was completely online because of Covid. We are in TX. I've looked into different programs for reading. Do you have any recommendations?

      You have to make it fun for her. I teach in ways my kids like. You have to have rules and structure..You can teach her and she may not realize it. Like how do you spell Mickey mouse.... Or TV. Or while at the zoo I try to see if she can find any words she can read. Let her read the menus at her favorite restaurants etc... The videos she has are great. Teaching my daughter from her videos...my daughter has jumped up over 60 lessons in just 3 weeks. She is gettingn better by the day. She now tries to read everything. Good luck.
