- In Europe, food manufacturers have signed up to ‘responsibility pledges’, promising no added sugar, preservatives, artificial colours or flavours and not to target children. So why are they using tactics banned in the West in the developing world? There, they have created ultra-low-cost products with higher levels of salt, sugar and saturated fats. Filmed in Brazil, India and France, we investigate the new tactics of brands like Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Domino’s Pizza.

"When a McDonalds comes to your town they create 40 jobs. For 20 dentists and 20 heart specialists". Bill Hicks.
Anyone who mentions Bill Hicks should get more than one Thumbs Up. Thought I knew every line of his but this one is new to me.

lol. completely underestimate the power of fast food.
We all choose what we put in our bodies.
19:53 "Are you addicted to it?"
"No, addiction is only when you can't stop smoking or drinking. What I'm doing is not addictive."
"So then why don't you stop?"
"I will at some point in the future but not now."
Spoken like a true addict.
It also shows a general perception in people's mind that eating food can't be an addiction and only smoking and drinking can cause addiction.
Sugar is the #1 world addiction and one of the hardest to break.
That's what I said when I was doing opioids 😂.
I agree that food is addictive, but I wouldn't believe that addiction is the only thing stopping people from stopping. For example, not everybody works because they are addicted to work. Not everybody takes care of their kids because they are addicted to taking care of their kids. Not everybody votes during elections because they are addicted to voting. Sometimes, our motivation is beyond the need for it. Sometimes, we just want it, but not need it. Sometimes, we need it, but not want it.
Only self-gratification egomaniacs are addicts. Stop putting your own self first (drugs, food, sex, whatever) and you'll be fine.
I worked in a hospital that added a fast -food franchise in the cafeteria. That's insane!

My brother thought he had the moral high ground when it came to health. He didn't smoke, didn't drink, and didn't do drugs. What he did do was eat junk food a lot. He ended up choosing a voluntary death at 72 when they told him he was going to have his second leg amputated because of diabetes. He also had had heart and cancer problems prior to this and was on full kidney dialysis for his last few years. If you do nothing else for your body, eat home cooking.
I can't win, I'll still be eating crap.
I cannot buy pure butter where I am. The double whipped is replaced with Natural same taste ingredients. Genuine cheeses are being replaced with cheese with soy additives. The parmesan has anti caking aka saw dust in it. In India the American brand Pizzas had no cheese, all a substitute.
Extra virgin olive oil is a bland substitute oil with some olive oil for mild olive flavour. Experts admit, "You cannot taste the difference."
The list goes on and on.
Deceptive labelling is approved by the corrupt system.
Exactly I don't eat fast food I don't drink soda I only cook at home. And I stick to this I haven't had any junk food for over 10 years. I am 50 now and wish I knew more when I was younger. But if I could give any advice to the younger people out there is please try to eat healthy and drink lots of water stay away from all these chemicals that are out there. When I was a kid growing up in New Zealand I used to look with a degree of envy on the "lucky" kids who had/could afford to buy bottes of fizz while I had my little bottle of home-made lemon drink. And of course pies, fish and chips, hamburgers etc. were a major attraction. But now I can't stand that stuff - any of it. I love my drink made from citrus fruit grown in the backyard, the in-season fresh fruit grown on a variety to trees and home cooking using vegetables from my gardens. I can't stand the garbage that pretends to be food and wince when I see people wheeling around supermarket trolleys laden with name-brand ready meals and junk food not to mention bottles of coke etc.
You're acting like unhealthy food is expensive and healthy food is not which is the complete opposite. And name brand junk food? Lol you talk like junk food is super unaffordable
I was a middle class child in New Zealand in the 1960s, children in our family were forbidden soda until age 8 and Coke until we were about 11 years old. That was generally the norm with friends I knew as well.
I experienced my first restaurant meal with the family at age 12. KFC came to the country when I was about 14, it was a big deal.
Still don't drink sodas, and I last ate KFC is 1985.
Exposing young children to what are effectively poisons, is pernicious. Those companies know full well the harm they create.

I'm about halfway through this video and so far I have had a swirl of emotion from sadness to rising and intensifying anger. I'm "African American" from the south, and I always admire these other countries for the richness of their cultures, especially their food. I love the fact that their culturally traditional dishes have such a wide array of spices and veggies and are simple yet complex in flavor, along with the fact that cooking has seemed SO family oriented. I HATE that these fast food giants have swept in, possibly under the guise of creating jobs for their people and their economy, and have created OBESITY in a place such as India, the creators of Ayuverda, which is a beautiful health and wellness practice, and in Brazil where the people are known globally to be visually stunning, vibrant, and fit, and creating a 1:2 ratio of obese adults!. Evil. Just evil. And I'm angry and astonished.
Yep, sadness and anger here too. It’s a very sad state of affairs indeed.
I am a Brazilian living in Canada and I follow a low carb lifestyle which is great. When I was a teenager in Brazil in the late 70s there were no plus size stores. If you were on the bigger size you would have to look for a seamstress or a taylor to make your clothes. There was a Jack In The Box which was far from where I lived and sometimes my boyfriend would drive me there on the weekends. Pizza from Italian pizzerias was also a treat for the weekends. Fast food joints were basically non existent, which made the consumption more difficult. We used to eat nutritious, home cooked meals 😢
Not an American but feel the same way ☹
Well curlygirlbri, I'm only 7 minutes into the video....but if it makes you angry, then the low calorie/low sugar food industry must have you raging. I grew up in Ireland, where we ate salt-cured bacon from pigs we killed ourselves. It was boiled with cabbage added halfway through the boil, and served with a big pot of boiled potatoes...and that was our diet every day but Friday. We ate it with loads of salted butter, and the fat bacon was cut in slices about one inch thick. I don't remember obesity being a problem, and my memories are reinforced by looking at old family photos. But then the medical professionals began telling everyone, your diet is unhealthy...and laws were passed to stop people killing their own pigs in their yards. So people began eating processed food, and followed the advice to eat low calorie etc, etc, and now obesity is a problem. What the socalled health experts didn't know, is that those pigs were allowed onto the land, where they rooted through the soil with their snouts for zinc and other vital minerals, from which we humans benefitted because the minerals were in an absorbable form in their fat....plus, if we don't have fat in every meal, our 'satiety switch' never activates, and our brains still think we need to eat more, so we stuff ourselves with carbs. The fast-food industry isn't the only one to blame...the medical industry is equally so.
@@shamrockshore6308 Oh trust me, I am well aware of the damage that the Medical and Pharmaceutical industries are doing to the human population at large. It's all about money, all of it. Money and control. Not just control of people through our bodies, but economics and personal financial standing as well if you know what I mean, it's all cyclical, everything plays into each other. They knew what they were doing when they stopped you all from having the natural resources of the people who came before you on the land and didn't feel that they had to rely on medical professionals for their "great help and knowldege". I eat a LOT of butter and fat in my diet. When I have a stable flowing income I eat largely plant based because it makes me feel the best, improved my weight and my pcos and balanced my gut and hormones. However, I also eat a lot of junk when I'm on a low budget in the form of snacks when it's just accessible and I'm doing uber deliveries all day and night, and there are no low budget healthy options available. Because the prices have also been jacked up on produce across the board and "vegan" and "vegitarian" food options are seen as a luxury instead of common place. And the fats that are used in the most cost effective meals widely available are not the same as the fats from whole sourced home cooked food, especially from animals that are caught and slaughtered organically (not the fad organic, but the real meaning of organic). I also forage around my city, whenever and wherever I can, I've even learned the seasons for about 6-7 different abundant fruits, and different plants in my area. So I'm with you in understanding. Every bit of cultural means of living, which are the most effective for human living have been attacked and sacrificed for money, power, and control of resources and people physically, mentally, financially and spiritually. I have a deep understanding and frustration of what's going on and it just gets more intense as time goes on and I learn more and more about how things have changed, and are changing, and why. I have goals to no be a part of this web, but I have to make me a way to make the changes and am looking to be of service to others who are in need of enlightening and help to better themselves in the process. Thanks for sharing your experience with me and the people in the chat too.
best advice i ever got from anyone was my uncle when i was 13: "drugs, war, and alcohol killed my generation, what will kill your generation is high fructose corn syrup and saturated fats". when i turned 24 i cut out all sodas, dont eat fast food more than twice a month, and eat absolutely nothing with high fructose corn syrup in it. if you care about your future, reject the modern corporate culture. get off social media, get off fast food, and get off the cycle of debt we're told is "sustainable". live frugally, eat right, and meet people face to face. your life will GREATLY improve.
Awesome post! Couldn’t agree with you more!

Well saturated fat is super healthy.

The quote, “They wouldn’t let them sell it if was bad”…..We can only wish there was such integrity
That's just an excuse though. Parents like fast food because it is quick and easy and kids want it. Nobody really believes this stuff if good for you, heck you don't even feel good after eating it. They just don't want to accept responsibility for taking the easy, trendy, way out.
Well, there is more to it than that... In South Asian countries, restaurant sanitation can be a problem. Street food and mom-and-pop restaurants may use real, better quality local ingredients, but getting sick from pathogens in restaurant food is still pretty common. Corporatized fast food doesn't have that problem due to the robust Western sanitary practices. That said, it's a tradeoff: short-term suffering but less long-term detriment with local street food or short-term pleasure and chronic suffering from fast food. Most people instinctively avoid anything that causes acute, immediate risk. So the chronic hypertension, diabetes, etc from corporatized fast food is more-or-less ignored...
This, in the country run by Bolsonaro.
Exactly. Big fast food chains and soft drink companies are counting on this. People assuming that if it is heavily marketed, that it is healthy :/
@@thebullishimpulse-elliottw6910 Wow. How ironic. Never thought about the fact that
I worked in France, as a ballerina for years. So as an adult I wasn't exposed to these marketing schemes. It has to start with public knowledge of what this really is, salt, fat and sugar all leading to obesity, heart disease and diabetes type 2, psycological dependence and so many other health related problems. What more countries need to do as France did, legislation to ban junk food, which is not food at all. My father is a cardiologist and ICU turnover rates are ever increasing. Knowledge and making proper decisions about what you put in your body is paramount to your health. Targeting children with these food apps is criminal in my opinion. These corporations as we have seen will do anything to push their chemically dangerous products. Thank you for this very informative documentary.
However, it is not entirely true that fat makes you fat. The ketogenic diet, for example, is based on replacing all the carbohydrates, which is nothing more than another type of sugar, with healthy fats (olive oil, for example). This was the first time I had success in losing weight.
Nothing beats a home cooked meal. Soda and fast food is a very rare treat in my home, if ever.
There’s nothing wrong with eating it once or twice a month. If your body is generally used to clean, fresh and healthy food, you will not crave fast food more than a handful of times a year anyways.
I come from Uganda ,East Africa . And it’s funny how fast foods,/junk is the most expensive food. A poor person can’t afford to buy a burger. We usually brand such foods for the rich .
It’s sad because if you enter a restaurant, and buy a burger you can be tagged rich.
We are still blessed with good organic food grown straight from the gardens /farms,
Low income earners can’t afford frozen meats or chickens ,the rich can,
It’s sad how people still would prefer to spend their tiny money just to brag that they ate pizzas,
We are still blessed I just pray people are more educated.

Note how the Indian woman says about KFC that the restaurant is “clean, there's hygiene, she sees how the food's prepared”. The saddest thing is that for many people in developing and underdeveloped countries fast food restaurants from big brands are literary the best, brightest, cleanest and nicest things they've ever experienced. And foods, drinks, interiors there seem for them so modern, shiny and polished. A local McDonald's can be really the only place in a neighbourhood where teens can hang out in a safe and clean environment.
The KFC from other countries does actually taste better
My thoughts exactly. It’s truly tragic. She mentions she “hasn’t been sick,” clearly referring to past food-poisoning experiences, due to unsafe food practices, presumably by street vendors. She doesn’t realize that the alternative IS making her sick, but incrementally over time.
And go to a normal toilet. I went to the Moscow Mc Donald's years ago when on a student trip, simply because I couldn't use those stand-up toilets (which I had never seen before in my life and had no idea how to use).
looking down upon other countries to feel better about your own country and own life huh ? I live in America and you can see what happened to us. From a young age I was fed these things and to this day at the age of 55 the addiction to salt and sugar is a daily battle. As a father I was able to protect my children but it was not easy to say NO at every children's birthday party, at each gathering, people looked at me like I was a bad father to my children. I even had to stop my wife who is southeast Asian from offering them sweets. I would tell her our children are already at a disadvantage simply by being born in America, why help this sick and twisted system?? Today all three of my children are Vegan (by their choice, I am not Vegan) and of a healthy weight which we shall call skinny by America's standards where most people are fat. If you cannot stop the American fast food companies from coming then as parents you can choose to love and protect your children and future generations by refusing to buy from these monsters until they go out of business close up shop. Once they gain a foothold the addictions and the obesity and diabetes will be passed on from generation to generation, claiming many lives, subduing your best and brightest into a life of food addiction and obesity.

He never had artificial sweeteners either; I made Jello and pudding from scratch. Also, If you raise your kids on healthy food, they'll hardly ever get sick. Back when I was a kitchen manager at Outback, Dateline did a story on how many calories were in the appetizers at Outback, and this was at a time when there were very few TV channels, so everyone saw it. That next week we sold less than half the number of appetizers. The week after that everything was back to normal.
It's like being in the checkout line and saying no to the candy bar. Then a minute later while still waiting saying no to it again. After telling yourself no 5 times, you decide you've been good and reward yourself with the candy bar.

@@markfairbanks3533 This documentary was on countries outside of America that are being exploited by Fast Food companies and American-style Junk Food companies, due to a lack of regulations that exist in America around advertising products like these to children.
If anything this documentary was showing you exactly why we need more PSAs around healthy eating, and more regulations to prevent Junk Food and Fast Food companies from deciding how and to who they will advertise.
Your personal anecdote about a Dateline story supposedly not working because, at the one Outback Steakhouse you worked at, there was only a temporary reduction in appetizer orders as opposed to a long-term reduction is not evidence that this was the case in other locations than the Outback you worked at or in other restaurants that aren't Outback Steakhouse. I’ve been on a Keto diet for 12 months with intermittent fasting. I’ve never felt better. I’ve lost a lot of weight but what has surprised me most is how much mental focus I have now.

I lived in South Korea for 4 years at the turn of the century, teaching English to all ages in multiple schools, cities and companies. My observations concerning the westernising of the diet are that the older generations predominantly stuck to and promoted the traditional diet which is very healthy and nutritious. These generations were slim and trim and fit. I entered into the traditional diet with exercise and lost 21 kg of fat to be slim and trim as a 63 kilo 50 year old over that time. Progressively down through the younger generations the change in dietary habit was evidenced by progressively more overweight or obese young people and children with an obvious taste for processed westernised foods. It was tragic then, in my opinion, because you could see the change before your eyes. What would it look like now, 20 years later?? I can understand the anger and frustration of many people, but the truth is that no one is forced to eat this junk, it is too easy to always blame others for their own wrongdoing
I'm from Chicago IL and watching this documentary is chilling me to the bone. I always knew from a young age that sugar and fast food is bad but seeing these big corporations target young children intentionally is so eye opening!!! THIS IS A GENOCIDE IN THE MAKING FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS TO COME.... everyone needs to see this video, especially parents who care for thier children.
GOD HELP US ALL 🙏
welcome to CAPITALISM; the killer of mankind
I am gonna be bluntly honest with you. It is you (i do not mean you directly) who desides to buy it and keep it in the house. As a parent, if you do not feed your kids healthy and proper you're an ahole. Plain and simple. Just don't keep that crap in your home. Take some time to cook a decent meal. We never have or had cola or other softdrinks in the house. We forbid drinking it till the age of 13. And even then the kids always ask permission. So for us it was a no brainer. People who give soda's to kids are stupid AF
@@jeffw9465 Right. If we banned all the foods that are not healthy, the shops would only sell fruit and vegetables. Even some fruit and veg is not healthy if eaten too much.
Children dont make buying decisions, adults do. Fizzy drinks and fast foods are meant to be a treat once a week, not a complete diet.
@@tubester4567 right, you really thought that one through didn't you??? I never mentioned not selling it in shops anymore
Yes it is, the rich egomanics who rule the world think the world is overpopulated. Instead of using their money to fix the planets problems, like fossil fuel usage, pollution, waste of resources, etc. They have decided to try and turn us into dumb people who die in senseless wars.
They lack foresight into the species as a whole. All they care about is maintaining their power and wealth to pass down to their spoiled children who are equally narcissistic. Some of them don't even care about their kids which is why they don't care what scientists are warning about the planets condition after they pass away.
Academics progression which innovates all industries is hampered because it's only given to a select class of society who can afford the lifestyle of studying and so on. Majority of the population does not develop the brains to actually do these courses because they are eating BS, caught in debt traps and working dead end jobs.
It's no surprise that China is now surpassing the US. Capitalist rich billionaires are a cancer to this planet. Their greed and uncaring about their future generations will be the end of humanity.
I grew up eating my mother’s home cooked meals and hardly ever drank soda or juice, I cook at home and use to bring home cooked meals to work daily. For those grew up eating fast food, processed food, and soda, they will have a hard time overcoming sugar and salt addiction. I used to love really salty food. It took me a lot of consciousness and time to get taste buds to enjoy less salt. Eating directly affects body and mood health. It should always be a conscious effort and decision to choose what and how much we put stuff into our body.
Wow you're a hero
@@pardonavich 🤣😂
Ya I'm not big at all but could do with a better diet but salt is on thing I hate I know it's in every thing we buy I tray to get the less sodam foods and will never add salt to any of my food.
Visited Tokyo recently and was shocked to see so many sugary products sold everywhere. Soda machines all over the city along with a fast food restaurant every 2 - 3 blocks.
While some people overeat , others go hungry by days at a time .
The sweetness of food and drinks in the philippines is beyond words.
I can mix one 330ml softdrink with 1L water and it is still to sweet.
They drink that stuff on a daily base in huge amounts. If i try to educate some about their food habits they get angry and say i have no idea what i am talking about.
When I went back to the Philippines from NZ, I had to legit spit out that ' pineapple ' juice a mate ordered for being too sweet lol.
Working at a juice bar prior, I'd know what it should taste like 😂
I love peanut butter. Back in the 80s, I lived in the Manila area and was so happy to find peanut butter. Then, YUCK. It was mostly sugar and I couldn't even eat it. Why on earth would they ruin a perfectly good food like that?
My family once gave me hell for eating healthy. I'm a western-wannabe, they say. My waistline says otherwise.
Traveling through the Philippines, I loved the place, and the people. But… the food!! Pork, fried chicken, and hardly any veggies.
@@billpetersen298 I know right? But Jolibee everywhere lol
the same here in Thailand. a horror in the supermarkets. hundreds of sweetened industrial juices and soy milk. salty ships in all versions. the street vendors offer syrup drinks - in all colors. instant coffee. lots of plastic packaging. and it keeps getting worse. no brakes from the government, because these people eat and drink this crap too.
They pretend like they do but all of the poisonous food is reserved for We The Peasants only. The Elite either eat high quality food or they don't eat.
the us gob is to blame with it's standard american diet
what's wrong with instant coffee though as long as you don't put the sweetener in?
@@greeneking77 it's toxic just like normal coffee (creates stress hormones )
Soy milk is not bad
I was a middle class child in New Zealand in the 1960s, children in our family were forbidden soda until age 8 and Coke until we were about 11 years old. That was generally the norm with friends I knew as well.
I experienced my first restaurant meal with the family at age 12. KFC came to the country when I was about 14, it was a big deal.
Still don't drink sodas, and I last ate KFC is 1985.
Exposing young children to what are effectively poisons, is pernicious. Those companies know full well the harm they create.
Sugar, sweeteners, strange words on the ingredient list and from when to when and how many times you eat are important factors to think about.
