- In this art demo, I’ll show you how to explore an abstract painting idea for a large canvas. This quick study is to flush out an idea for the second of three 36” x 48” paintings. Each of these paintings will be tied together by a shared theme, but they'll each have their own unique flair in terms of color palette, style, and composition.

Working on such a large canvas is both thrilling and a bit daunting. That's where the magic of painting studies comes in. Before I even think about touching the large canvas, I like to work out my abstract painting ideas in smaller studies. These are like mini rehearsals, allowing me to experiment with acrylic painting techniques and see how my ideas translate visually.

In this video, I'm going to give you an art demo of how I practice painting these ideas. These small studies are crucial. They help me understand composition, color harmony, and texture, which are so important in acrylic painting, especially when it's going to be on a large canvas. It's like a test drive for my ideas!
I'll also show you the painting study I did before starting the first piece. It's a great way to see the evolution of abstract painting ideas from sketch to final product. Doing these painting studies really helps refine my approach, ensuring that when I finally approach the large canvas, I feel confident and ready.
And here's where I need your help! At the end of this video, I'll show you all three painting studies for my next piece in this series. I'd love your input on which you think would translate best to a large canvas. Your opinions are invaluable to me, so don't hold back!
So, let's explore these abstract painting ideas together. Whether you're into acrylic painting, interested in how a painting series develops, or just love art, there's something here for everyone. Let's get those creative juices flowing!
And remember, keep on painting!

I personally like 2, 1 then 3.
But I'm sure they would all be great
Thank you so much, Cindy!😊
Probably 1 , though it's a tough call. The composition in 3 is strong and the background colour works well. Nice!
Thanks, Danny! I appreciate your feedback.
Nice to see some finished larger work along w enjoying the quicker exercises. Of the three in question I prefer the one you featured in the process over the other two.
Thank you so much, Mayet!
Interesting, for me the one turned out to be a lying figure ! So I prefer the objectional one. The random shapes developed!
Thank you so much for your feedback, Anna!
Hi Chris. I love your work! In this vid, I preferred the small sketchy paintings to the large finished one in the beginning of the vid. I was attracted to all the small ones but mostly in the vertical position with the multiple circles on the bottom. Fun video. And inspiring.
Hey Kathe! Thank you so much! Yeah, they are definitely different styles. I like the sketchy ones better as well.😊
I like the composition of number 3 best and the colours in number 1.
Thank you, Lisa! That's very helpful😊
I like 1 and 3! And it reminds me of a cat toy🫣
Haha, thanks El Gi! Too funny😂
1,3, then 2. I like them all. The sketchy look of the first one. The Blues in the second. The third is calming.
Thank you for such specific feedback! 😊👍
I like them all. My fave 1 landscape version
Thank you! That's currently my favorite as well.❤️
1, to me has strongest composition, and I like the color too
Thanks, L!❤️
I like them all but 3 is my favorite. Thanks for the video!
Thanks so much, Peggy!😊
Love 👏👏👏👏👏👍 1 , although 2 l like as well reminds me of ancient ruins rome .
Thank you, Laura!❤️
Love number 1. I think you just agve me a great starting point for an abstract rock formation that i would love to have ago at. Thanks for sharing your creative process.
Thanks, Jayne! Good luck and let me know how it goes❤️
Hej Chris . I like the third colaer most. I se Stones in the picture. I like Them all. I also realt like the Way jou are asking for feer back. I am New i painting and i am trying to make somthing i like I love all your videoer. Please make more. Thank you. 😊🌻🥰
Hey Lone! Thank you for your specific feedback😊 I will keep making more videos👍
Wow. Great video again. 🤩 Love to see the process and the forms develloping! 👍🏼
Well, I do like all three versions. ❤ But my favorite is No. 1 horizontal (at 7.27). Second best for me is No. 2 horizontal (at 7.38). 👍🏼
Gonna have to try that! 😊
Never done something like that before. 🙈
Thanks, Thomas! Give it a try and let me know how it goes. 🙂🖌️
This video just comes at the right time as I am working on a mixed media piece with a similar coulour palette. I clearly like the 1st sketch best. It's the blue background that pleases my eyes. + it's not that abstract like the other sketches. Something like that could well be a part of what I have in mind. I will do my own explorings... thank you for the inspiration
Thanks, Margret! Enjoy creating!🖌️🙂🎨
Well, I like them all, but my favourite would be the first one, the demo one. I liked it in its original way up, but also in the horizontal position, the little touch of pink really works to make it exciting for me, it would look great as a larger painting. I also liked the blue one, it was surprising, the green one was nice but it wasn't as exciting as the first. The first one has a vibration I know its weird. Cheers from Tasmania!
Hey Howling! Thank you for your detailed feedback 😊 Your vibration comment makes perfect sense to me. There is definitely more energy in that one. Cheers!
@@chrisloudart oh thank you! Glad it made sense, I really loved the big painting that you showed us at the the beginning of the video as well. Cheers!
@@howlingwind1937 Thank you, it was enjoyable to paint!
Like this video? Love this video! Love your series can’t wait to see all three big canvases together - feed back - rock on with your killer painter self ❤️❤️👏👏
Hey Kelly! Merci beaucoup ❤️ I'll keep on rockin'!
I really really like this 🥰🥰🥰🤨🤨
Thanks so much, Roxanne! I'm so glad to hear that❤️
I prefer #1, but perhaps add a bit more orange (as in #3).
Thanks, great suggestion! I'm working on the larger version of this today.🖌️🎨
@@chrisloudart I look forward to seeing it.
@@chrisloudart Can't wait to see that. 👍🏼
I like #1 best, as the shapes have more luminosity, and tend to integrate with the background. Always enjoy your videos Chris, but it was particularly nice to see you in your intro, adds a certain something. Really like your channel. Thanks for sharing and inspiring us!
Hey Kathy! Thank you for your kind words and your feedback❤️
Hi !!! Great work.... Funny when you said working on a larger painting intimidates you its quite the opposite for me bigger the canvas is stronger the fear is... The intensity and emotion of fear takes me out of my confortable paths and that's where my work becomes interestting... Have you ever tried painting outside of your confort zone ?
Thanks so much, Artmel! Yes, I find working outside my comfort zone is great for improving and learning new skills. Working on larger canvases can be frightening at first, but once I start painting I really enjoy it.😊
#1 ...but I'm wondering if you could play with perspective. More like the inspiration photo to draw your eye into the canvas?
Thanks, Jan! Great suggestion! I'm currently working on the 36"x 48" canvas based on these exercises and I did just that. Matter of fact I altered the composition quite a bit and it's much more engaging (at least in my opinion).🙂
I like the first one the best.I also love using applicators, especially on horses for manes and tails! Your colors are very pretty! 🖌️🎨
Thank you! I find applicators quite addicting and have to remind myself not to go overboard when using them😃
@@chrisloudartYes... overboard is easy to do!!
I liked the colors on the first study and the composition of the third. The colors of the large painting at the begining of the video reminded me of parakeets. Bright and cheerful. Thank you for sharing your process with us.
Thank you, Linda! I love getting clear feedback like this 😊 I can see what you mean about the parakeet colors-love it!
It’s probably just me but all I could see was a seated dog. All the colour ways looked good
Thanks, Denise! I don't think it's just you, I stepped back and saw a seated cat, so I removed the left ear.😂
I liked 3 the best, but Liam no expert in any of these topics. Enjoyed the video!
@@DDartlover8888 Thanks, Denise! That's good, I'm looking for non-expert feedback.😊
I love all of these. I liked 2 the best. Watching your videos have really helped open my eyes to experimenting and being loose. Now I need to put it into practice. 😊
Hey Kim! Thank you so much 😊 Taking the initial step to paint can often be the hardest part. You've got this!
I like 1 and 2 best. The composition of 3 is great but not so keen on the colour combinations.
Thank you for your feedback!😊
#1 it's the one 😂 I don't know why, it's lit, maybe its the pink? 🤔
Haha, thanks Nicole! My favorite as well👍
hello again, chris. a question about paints. having mostly liquitex heavy body acrylics, i am ordering soft body, as they move easily on the painting surface. i'm curious about nova color paints and liquitex basics. what's your experience iin this? i want my work to move quickly and flow and also be able to move about on larger canvases and panels as well as paper nad smaller painting substrates. thanks, chris, as you have helped me get out of my box!
Hey Carole! I like the consistency of Liquitex basics, it's close to Winsor Newton acrylics (which I prefer), I haven't used Nova a whole lot, but my thoughts are they are more high flow acrylics with good pigment. I actually have quite a bit of Nova paint, but I've only used them a few times so far. Hope that helps😊
@@chrisloudart thanks much, chris!
Anytime! 😊
Do you cleaner your roller inbetween each colour or how does that work?
Hey Jamie! I will roll the previous paint off onto a scrap page each time. I also have some baby wipes that I'll do a quick wipe off. 😊
#2
Thanks, L!😊
Thanks, L!
I préfère thé fiesta one! More texture, more coloré research.
Merci beaucoup, Marie-Claude!❤️
