    The Tacoma is the best truck out there. I had a 2003, red PreRunner, and just sold it to a friend last year. I was the original owner and it only had 127k miles on it. I never had any issues with it. I had the same interior as yours. I'm glad the new ones have a timing chain instead of the belt. That'll be my next vehicle.

    I was looking around for a long time trying to find somebody who has done this conversion, I bought a prerunner as my first truck a few months ago, and one of my point I wanted but couldn't find was a 4x4. I looked under the truck and saw that it has everything to do the swap, and I found your video! Thanks a lot for making these, you definitely earned a sub and and a thumbs up! The pre runner is great but same with mine Not even a rear locking axle so it’s just 1 wheel drive when your stuck so 4 wheel drive makes a gigantic difference off road or in the snow.

      Ideally you wanna find the same year transmission as yours that belongs to the same engine type (V6 or I4). If not, any transmission from a 1998-2004 Tacoma or 1996-2000 4runner, still the same engine type, will work.
      Be thorough as some '03 and '04 trans. come with an electronic cable kickdown. Make a note of whether your transmission comes with a cable kickdown or not, and purchase the same kind. This is mentioned at 12:00.

    Love this video, I’m actually planning on doing this. A friend of mine who has a shop just did a motor swap and the parts truck was left at his shop from the owner. He hasn’t been able to get in contact with the kid for a few weeks so he’s about to claim it as abandonment and when that goes through he’s giving me to truck and I can bring my truck over to do the swap. I’m probably going to do the same as you, do the A340F and T case first and then the front diff with front axles next. The Only hiccup mines a dc and the parts truck is a Xtra cab so I’ll have to find a rear drive shaft that will work.

    4runner sr5 J-shift transfer case is compatible with the prerunner.
    If I'm not mistaken you can also use the same transmission if you switch out the rear case.
    4runner limited is vacuum and electronically operated.
    I think the front differential is vacuum operated and must be locked in permanently. Correct me if I'm wrong.
    I've been looking into doing this on my taco as well and that's basically all the research I've been able to come across.

    • @CRACKEDHOUSINGFAB
      @CRACKEDHOUSINGFAB  3 года назад +1

      Yes you are correct about the j shift, it works without any need for any electronics. You can use the same transmission but it requires the 4x4 rear housing and also the rear output shaft is different. To turn your 2wd trans into 4wd required a complete disassembly of the trans to swap over the output shaft. We do have part two of our build that shows you how to sort out all of the front parts, go check it out!!

      I am not aware that the limited and sr5 have a different transmission. I know that I needed to find A340F transmission for it to work with my truck and that I had a fully electronic trans, some of the older transmissions have a vacuum kickdown so that's something that you need to watch out for. There should be a plate on the side of the trans that says what model it is

    with the J-style transfer case, does that allow you to bypass the need to go to the 4WD engine harness?

    • @CRACKEDHOUSINGFAB
      @CRACKEDHOUSINGFAB  3 года назад

      Yes it does. That's the main reason I went with a j shift. If you want to go with the push button style then you would have to swap in the 4x4 harness. Plus I just like the old school style t case anyway.

Basically paid 2,500 for the entire 4x4 system but I am being told there are differences in the 2 wheel drive and 4x4 models.

    Hey man any thoughts about resealing the oil pan as preventative maintenance while you have access to it... I heard if your oil pan starts to leak with the 4x4 you either have to pull the engine or drop the front diff to get to the pan... this is a very help video...

    • @CRACKEDHOUSINGFAB
      @CRACKEDHOUSINGFAB  3 года назад

      Thank you!! My oil pan looks really clean still so I won't need to do that right now. It is alot easier to drop the diff, in my opinion, than to pull the motor. Either way there is work involved but I think it's less work to drop the diff than to pull the motor.

    HELP !!!! Can someone point me in the right direction in resolving my 98 4Runner issue? When I engage 4H it goes in silent but when it goes back to 2H (disengage) the is a loud bang (like a sled hammer bang). The is a delay for about 30 second to disengage as I drive down the road. My other 4Runner does a loud click only. I don't know the history on the car but I have changed all the oil already.
