Fuller and his friends put two 2wd trucks up against a 4wd GX740 to see if you REALLY can off-road a 2wd. On one side, you've got a beat-up old work truck, and on the other - a fully built pre-runner. But does it even matter since they are both only 2wd?

You should do more functional tests like this, maybe do big wheels small tires vs big tire small wheel, or big lift vs stock etc.
Agreed
Would be fun to do for sure!
Test out big back tires, smaller/skinny front tires, like a sandcar.
yes there are tons of offroading myths. we need more Mythbusters like this.
@@DoubleTripleOGfromtheset yup my 55 GMC Truck is set up like you mentioned; 215/78R15 front and 235/78R15 rear. They're old style, hard treaded whitewall mud and snow tires. Lots of treads on the rear tires but not much on the front.
There is a lot of effort in this video and I’m here for it
Thank you so much! -Fuller
I offroaded a 2wd locked suv and it was surprisingly capable. I feel like a 2wd pick-up is hindered more so with the lack of weight in the back.
Throw 500 pounds worth of dirtbikes in the bed and you're set
Yup
Great for sand, shit for anything else
Not if you had enough sandbags in the back. It should only take about 10.
@@Zach-sg5uu or if you cave a camper shell and your camping things in the bed it'll get more grip
I know all kinds of older guys who used to run two wheel drive in the mud and stuff, purely because 4 wheel drive wasn't an option when their trucks were built
My grandfather (never got the chance to meet him) used to bomb through mud bogs on the East Coast of Canada in his old 2WD Chevy. Also drove it in some pretty deep snow, with chains of course. I’ve also done it a couple times in my Ranger. 2WD can be lots of fun. Trucks are so much more than just the 4x4 system people think about.
You should make a series out of this, this is quality!!
I agree. There’s a rally school that posts videos on here off roaring absurd vehicles. I recommend it
Quenton Smith tbh with you Ima car guy but they got me into trucks too!
Abed Alarab yes please
Off-roading is more fun with buddies Anyways ..so if you have a 2wd make sure at least one of your friends has a 4WD.
Or a winch as stated
YEAH AJ U MISSED THE THING ABOUT THE WHINCH U IDIOT-!!1!!1!1!
I have a Nissan Frontier Dessert Runner, 2wd, so I only go when my buddy comes with cause of his jeep lol
Yup. Saves from sittin on the tailgate waiting three hours for a pull out..
@@jacobcannon36 Jacob it’s spelled “winch” 🙃 & I mentioned to go with friends who have 4wd as another option if you don’t have a winch. Chill bro
I put a stock Jeep Dana 44 with a mini spool in my XJ and proceeded to do all the same rocky hill in 2wd that I’d done in 4x4 months prior.
Not only that but rwd locked in snow was AWESOME!
I appreciate this video so much because I have a RWD, and it makes me confident to do things with it, so thank you Custom Offsets
🙏🙏
Wouldn’t make it in my neck of the woods
@@redsea2942 bro you are so cool I can't believe how cool you are
@@redsea2942 luckily we ain’t going to your neck of the woods 🙄
I had a 2wd manual transmission Mazda B2500 in high school that I took anywhere and everywhere mudding, trails, towing and racing. Driver skill makes the difference! Learn your vehicle!
That's the exact ute I have now (2007). I'm contemplating chucking some A/T tires on it and going around Australia in it, it's a good ute and I don't wanna sell it.
@@josephbowditch9160 lucky
Pretty much a Ford Ranger
I think they're more like the older Ford courier than the ranger
from my experience, 2WD can do 90+% of obstacles a 4WD just with momentum. also if you’re checking out something new, do NOT go alone in a 2WD vehicle. while capable, you need the extra precautions.
Momentum can also equal damage.
I have my grandpa’s 2004 F150 extended cab 2wd 4.6L as a daily driver and I would LOVE to transform it into a custom pre-runner someday! I wish I could afford an awesome King suspension system, a 5.0 swap, and a sick raptor style body kit like that!
Joseph M you make a solid point! I’ve been thinking about other options ha
I bought a set of these a couple of months ago cor my 2018 Nissan frontier pro4x after watching your videos over and over. So far I've had them through mud, over rocks, sand, gravel and snow/Ice with absolutely no troubles. I live on a mountain so when it snows I have to drive up and down a mountainside daily.
Heck yeah! I rocked 2wd on the "trails" for a long time
All my off-roading has been in 2wd . decades
😎👍
i wanna make my 2wd into a prerunner of some sort eventually. that would be fun
I offroaded up a mountain with a bunch of 4x4s in my 2017 tundra and by the time I got stuck everyone was amazed it even made it as far as it did . You just gotta know your limits
Would love to see a review on the prerunner 👍🏼
Me and my friends all have Tacoma SR5s all with custom Off-road tires. Mine is 2 wheel RWD V6 and I have 33in Falken Widepeak AT3W tires. My other friend has just the stock on there and his Tacoma handles desert runs perfectly fine. Personally 4WD is best when dealing with steeper, muddier, tougher terrain, but a 2WD while doing a desert run is seriously fun af.
You guys put so much time into this and I’m loving this type of video
Can vouch. 2017 f150 2WD with ko2s and a locking rear diff. Just got back from a winter in Montana and some off-roading to chicken corner via hurrah pass. It can be done for sure but you gotta be smart about it. And ALWAYS have a hand winch and some tow rope ready. For me 2wd cover 90 percent of trails I’d normally do. FWIW even in Montana a lot of guys wernt 4WD. Snow is snow and if you’re stuck deep it really doesn’t care how many wheels are spinning.
Ko2s are awesome freaking tires. A pair on the back of my 94 2wd f150 with a factory trac lok limited slip. Factory suspension and factory size tires too. Only time I got it stuck was when the frame was in the mud in a pit that was basically quicksand. I was 3/4 of the way through too, but I slowed down like a dumbass. haha. 4wd toyota 4runner with locker had a really, really hard time pulling me out. I can't believe the places my truck will go.
2wd are kind of more fun because everything suddenly becomes harder
And more sideways😉
Ryan Coleman yesssir
Sketchy for sure and it’s good to get the heart pumping lol
It’s all fun and all until you get stuck and have no one around you to get you unstuck
It's like choosing the higher difficulty level on a video game.
This is totally different for customoffsets you never show your trucks off road and its about time keep making vidoes like this of you guys driving the big trucks off road
I have Friends with Tacomas 2WD but with Rear Lockers that go most places us 4wD go...2WD with no rear locker are going to get stuck in some places
Yeah my truck has a 8.8 with limited slip and I take it places 4wd trucks go all based on momentum
Now i know ..having 2wd with rear locker can go offroad ..thanks man..i bought my brand new pick up truck 2wd with rear locker..
jerry fernandez on your experience, when those Tacomas start struggling and 4wd keep going? Meaning in what type of terrain?
Charles Dee hell yeah bro
RagingTiger of course if you can 4x4 is the way to go, you definitely are still going to be limited in what terrain you can tackle but for most intermediate trails you will be fine
I off-road my 71 VW bug. My buddies jeep Wrangler got stuck and I started driving circles around it and then pulled in front of him and covered it mud with a "burn out" lol. Then We drove around till we found someone who could pull him out and they laughed while following my little bug doing 35 mph in the mud. Lol
What's the build look like. Looking to make something like that
Damnit. This deserved a like right away! I have a 2wd but the prerunner Offroad is something I’m in. People don’t understand different builds.
Just took a stock 3rd gen 4runner out on a trail it went pretty good. Avoided the mud woth good reason but handled the sand and soft dirt areas just fine. Did good uphill too. The only thing changed with the suspensions were a little taller and the tires were stock size but falken rubitrek at 33 psi
No matter what you wheel, knowing your limitations will avoid a lot of broken parts and aggravation.
isn't that the truth! -Fuller
Nah bro "when in doubt throttle out" is the motto I live by 😤
Take my 2017 2wd Tacoma sport out all the time! The 2wd truck are really capable.
Should come ask the cali desert racers how they like their 2wd
Yah I was gonna say lol.. desert trucks are majority 2wd so I was confused
They should come down to barstow, i know a bunch of dudes who would happily show off their 20+ in of travel prerunners
Sic Semper Tyrannis stfu
@Sic Semper Tyrannis you're flat out wrong. I was able to take my 1st gen fwd lifted wide highlander with 265/70/16 bfg KM3s with traction control with 1 inch wheel spacers on 2nd gear on a rockyish gravel road going pretty steep uphill similar to that obstacle... If I lowered my tires down to 20psi. I'd go up the hill easily. I don't know how those guys cant make it up that rockyish obstacle uphill. 1. They didn't lower the tire pressure down trying that obstacle. 2 there too heavy body weight wise, 3. theres too much torque on the welded diff f150 prerunner, and the open diff 2500. Its open diff. The land cruiser Lexus version on the other has A trac which has traction control and its lighter than the 2 2wd trucks. Lighter vehicles make a big difference offroading... Traction control too.
Two wheel drive Toyota Sequoia baby
I’ve been unable to go up a trail in 4x4 in an XJ. Put a spool and left it in 2wd and was able to make the trail.
Spools/lockers in a 2wd will amaze you
Granny gear, the right axle ground clearance the right tires, a stout manual and a winch is all you need. Tires and the right axle matter more than anything. That's why old 2wd truck in Alaska backwoods got along fine with a good driver. Unless you're going where a Hummer can there isn't many places you can't go in a 2wd and the right tools. Now you may not be deep bogging or rock crawling but that's playing unless it's life or death.....
I grew up dirt biking all over southern California and I can tell you with enough speed and ground clearance, you can climb anything without the need for 4wd lol
I offroad my 2wd 99 sr5 4runner. And it pushes through great! Got stuck on mud on a incline. But still made it out turning off traction control, got on low and maneuvered. With a spotter. Its really about how you take on the trails, clearance plus tires of course. So much fun! But im going full out prerunner with my 4runner build. Very stoked !
I am going to send some fan art do want something specific
Anything man!
Very good video, my truck is only a 2wd and man it will surprise you with just some simple upgrades. In mine i have a detroit tru trac with some nice tires and it will go a lot of places. Spent all day in silver lake sand dunes and never got stuck once! Plus being in 2wd you dont get nearly as stuck as a 4wd lol
Because of the low gear MANUAL (STANDARD) IS BEST TRANSMISSION TYPE.
I've owned 2 vehicles that had 4 wheel drive, but it didn't work for a period of time. First was my 92 s10 blazer. The 4x4 didn't seem to make that big of a difference because it had a limited slip rear diff and plenty of weight on the back. It was pretty good off-road and even when I fixed the 4 wheel drive, I seldom needed it because it would either do fine in 2wd, or 4wd wouldn't help. The second vehicle is a Toyota tundra, and it makes a lot more of a difference due to a lack of weight on the back, but honestly, decent tires make a bigger difference than 4x4 in my opinion, and if I load the tundra down with firewood or something, it's very good off-road without 4x4
If you want to blaze down a dirt or gravel fire road you can do that in a RWD truck or probably even a FWD car of some sorts. If you want to take on a jeep trail up a mountain you will need a 4x4 and depending on how difficult the trail is you may need a rear and even front locker.
jamesngotts wtf is a Jeep trail?
Impressive! You fellas have come a long way. Keep up the great work.
That prerunner 5.0 F-150 looks absolutely killer
Good to see you off-road fuller
Nice video I like this change of pace
My dads 2010 Ford F-150 Raptor SVT has method rims, I highly recommend these rims cause there AWESOME!
I appreciate the work you put into this. Great knowledge base, interesting but applicable vehicle choice, terrain choice was a style/type I think we all can relate to. Outcome, well, pretty much what I expected, but, driving home the philosophy that common sense prevails! Well presented, good camera work, great vid/edit. YT got the reccomend thing right this time, new sub, looking forward to the next one.
I like that gmc. It’s nice to know my 2wd hd is not useless off road.
Had a friend that I would go wheeling with who had a 2wd tacoma. He got stuck in everything from sand to ice, but we always had fun
How about a front wheel drive Hybrid Ford Maverick?!
Props to the guy running the camera drone
I took my 1984 Supra on a pretty hairy road to a campground in the San Juan mountains in Colorado. This road literally had foot deep pits the size of small cars all over it and covered with piles of rocks all over the place, plus a couple of water crossings. Even trucks had to zig zag from one side of the road to the other to get through this place, really needed a grading bad. Also one time we came by from Cripple Creek by way of the Phantom Canyon Road in a rental Impala, which was as scared as my wife has ever been, until we drove on I-25 in Denver.
You had my like for the gx470. I grew up in one of those & now I own a 460
Y'all need more content like this
Took my stock pt cruiser offroad once. I was pissing off jeeps left and right because the car was getting around better with fwd and like 5 inches or less of ground clearance.
I'm just going to say it. Your stock pt cruiser was not performing better than ANY 4x4 jeep
@@dailydoseofpwnage carefully selected paths and a lead foot- I absolutely got around better than the jeeps I saw at the orv park that day. The car was really light and if you got some speed going it did some cool shit. Can't discount driver skill either, most people where I live suck at driving and have 0 confidence.
I did everything with my long travel tacoma in 2wd that I did in 4wd. Some places it took 13 tries though...shell reef doing a half hill climb and disappear and come back down the chutes .black mountain poway up the roads close to the glider path...devil's slide to the top numerous times up the spine .
Almost made the drop off fish Creek when it was a drop off...before wannabe s stacked rocks. Competition hill..oldsmobile...I kept the transfer case..but yanked the front end ..before toyota offered a prerunner I built one with real shocks and locker and kept the transfer case .that's the secret ..low range. And you need. To air down unless your a race truck ..that is rolling resistance and grip .low range gears and air pressure. Long travel and a skilled driver..
I used to dune it with 31x10.5 on pizza cutters..the beige one back in the day at glamis .I used to glow stick my wheels so everyone could see my fronts weren't turning and the rear were..no one had that back then and I used to catch a lot of shit...cause I made stuff look hard ..then i would say I'm 2wd and people would argue with me till I walked them over and showed them i had no front differential..then it was DUDE this fucking guy climbed this hill or this fucking guy is out duning a 2wd..
Duning a 2wd on pizza cutters. Low range forward ..never low range reverse .... lol..
Pick your line before you come down the hill to go back up...you cannot get out of the throttle..so no traffic...made it hard at compe at night..so much traffic ..not any more ..not even allowed to be there. Assholes.
I can remember people's faces when they were stuck and asked me for help and we yelled 2wd as we charged past them..2 liter of coke ..pour out 1 liter. .fill with Jack...no food needed for 8 hours or more ..lol...
I have a 2011 Chevy Silverado wt 2wd and i have never had problems going up off road hills or off road but idk, maybe i know my limits
Luke from DIALED painted that prerunner in his garage...... So sick DIALED BABY DIALED 📸🚘📸🚘📸🚘📸🚘🚦🚦🚦
Oh I forgot to mention his RUclips channel us DIALED check it out !!!!
Wait this is great y’all are out filming stuff not just at home great content 👍
You could lock out any 2 wheeler in the rear simply by slight pulling the parking brake. This will make both rear wheels use the engine power when and if you need to.
That’s what I was thinking too the whole time that if I get a 2WD vehicle I could still take it off roading, just not too extreme like going on steep hills and deep waters! Thank you it means a lot! :)))
Ahhh yeah another custom offsets vid!
I like my 2wd pickup for all the dirt roads it sees as a daily, sometimes I think I'm in a prerunner tee hee
Talk to the Baja 500/1000 guys, they've been rockin' 2wd bad boys for many years.
How come
I hardly even use my 4wd unless I’m on the beach. Never had to use it tbh and only been stuck a handful of times lol. Can’t believe this is even a video lol just don’t stop 😂 dope video tho
Killer guys I enjoyed this very much thanks for doing something different :) My 2WD lifted Tundra luvs it also lol..
I offroad a mustang (2wd of course), but it has decent weight on the rear, only light offroading though
Mustang FTW! 😁👍👍
Love the prerunner!
I'm so glad to see Lexus and Toyota, these 10+ year old cars, are still relevant today. I got into cars in 2018 and was team Toyota from the start
Do videos like this comparing wheels and tires. Like what is better a 22” or 17” on pavement and on dirt.
Man uses a 2wd off-road truck.
Pre-Runner drivers: *well of course I know him. He's me.*
It would be awesome if you have added a 2wd Ridgeline in the comparison. Would love to see how FWD vs RWD truck compare in the off-road. Also Ridgeline has more chances of conquering that first hill, if it will go backwards.
You can Offroad a station wagon on 10s if you want to ...
exactly!
No joke saw this a few weeks ago was at our offroad park at night and a old beat up red station wagon goes blowing by me
A good set of mts, and a little common sense, sometimes i dont even use 4wd
Hell yea!! I go mudding all the time in my 2wd f150
My f150 is rear wheel drive and I put a locking diff in it and I've never had a problem off roading. Most 4x4 trucks are open diff and when youre in mud or snow only 2 wheels are spinning anyway.
Fuller always makes the best videos tbh
That GMC sounded niiiice in that mud! Flowmaster?
2wd raptor in the thumbnail. I know a lot of guys with gen 1s like me that go long travel and have to go 2wd. If youre jumping and hauling ass through everything a 2wd pre runner is great, but as soon as you need to slow down in the soft sand or mud youre screwed. 4wd is better for slow speeds but 2wd is also possible. Just havr buddys, bubba ropes, and winches. I used to offroad a 2006 2wd tundra and it went almost everywhere. Now ive got the 4wd raptor and i can go more places with safety and confidence, especially in the ice and mud
I live by the beach in Texas, so my style of offroading would be more the F150 prerunner. Although I would probably build a prerunner silverado, with a cammed 6.0.
Really enjoyed this just wish there was more😁👍
Nice content, thanks Fuller.
Glad you enjoyed it!
What kind of exhaust do you have? That sounded beautiful when you were backing out of the mud .
I would like to see the same set of tests but done again with off road tires, all season tires, mud snow chain test ect to see how much they respond to different tires.
More vids like this would be rad
if you cut the wheel back in forth any time you’re about to get stuck it helps a lot but love the videos
Thats only with 4wd
With enough speed you can off-road any vehicle
More videos like this please
Best CO vid ever lol
Can you daily drive a 2wd in winter aka snow?
You can daily basically anything with some good tires!
Yes
Yeah I took my 2000 rwd s10 with cheap street tires and 300 pounds in the bed in snow and deep slush and mud just used 1st gear so I wouldn't get stuck
Fuller needs to cam and slap a turbo on that puppy
Nagasaki Noisemaker? Mongolian Motor Mangler? Whats your flavor?
Custom Offsets either one that won’t break the bank, but a boosted 6.0 freakin rips
Can you do more videos like this
2wd can go some places but it takes more skilled driving. You have to use momentum at times to not get stuck. Also the lighter the truck the better it does. Small trucks like rangers and tacomas dont even need 4x4 in most trails.
Speaking of 2wd vehicles: do you recommend using 3” spindles and 3” coil spacers on an 08 tahoe
Mississippi strutin spindles
Use spindles for your Tahoe. Coil spacers are cheaper but your ride will be very stiff and uncomfortable. Get also shocks. Some good inexpensive shocks would be some Bilsteins don’t get icons.
Jonathan no I mean is using both at the same time a good idea
That setup would be ok technically but you would need a extended upper control arm as well so that the shocks could cycle properly and not be limited by the oem uca
Mississippi strutin I would say try 2IN GM STRUT LEVELING KIT. I’m run coil spacers on my truck and it’s a terrible ride.
That was sick
6:10 think you should off-road in Manuals more often. I’ve off-roader in both and found I have way more control with a manual. But i only own manuals and am used to it already .
The answer is yes. I have a 2wd GMC Canyon and I rally the hell out of it Offroad.
That’s interesting to see but you should really do it with 2wd Toyota Tacoma vs a four-wheel-drive Tacoma next
Momentum will take you ANYWHERE
With enough speed, we might be able to wave as we pass the SpaceX crew!
Bro I honestly do it all the time!! Just don’t get brave and I wouldn’t go mudding
You just need momentum to go mudding in a 2wd
LowSlo 92 for sure bro if not you’ll get stucc most def I know grime experience lol
what exhaust are you running on the work truck?? That thing sounds so good!!
That Sierra sounds good
2:02 Shoutout cameraman. I would've tripped or something.
super helpful thank you
May i be the first aussie to ask you what tire pressure u running mate? For reference we aren't happy unless its sub 20psi. Good video i would have thought the locked diff rwd would do better.
