    The lost art of REAL metal fabrication. No fancy machines doing it for you...just a man that knows what he is doing & great at explaining it in simple terms.
    Brilliant.

    I don't ever comment on youtube videos, but I had to take the time to tha k you for this video along with all the tube bending and notching prequels. this has EVERYTHING I need to be able to make my roll cage for my Trans Am. your video demonstrations have answered so many questions. you could teach this stuff professionally if given the proper forum. thank you so much. good work.

    I'm watching this two years later, it's very interesting, may I say here in Australia the bar across the windscreen should be straight because if you have a side on contact being straight it's less likely to bend in, it would be the same for the cross roof bar, apart from those to things I find your video very informative. Thanks mate.

      New Zealand too.. . Its an a crazy weak spot in otherwise brilliant cage design...
      Although, so saying, relative strength would still be high if joined to originating cars metal work in centre of screen... Think dimple dye 3mm plate...

    Some of the best how to for people who wanna learn out there. Excellent. For me, most of the time what I do to avoid putting rocker boxes up front so I don’t have to deal with welding backside and more floor space for driver is get the forward laterals in position and small tacks to hold. Get the windshield bar in position with good solid tacks. Remove small tacks at the hoop where the laterals joined. Lean the hoop back a bit drop the front of the cage down and weld up the bars. Raise it back up to join the hoop and tack in place. Then you can remove the blocks to drop the hoop and weld at the hoop. Just another way to do things.

      I love these videos. It inspires me to start doing this myself. I have an Everlast welder and other tools but don't have a pipe bender. How critical is that?

    • @510Redneck
      @510Redneck 8 лет назад

      Jamie Thomas You can buy pre-bent pieces (it will just cost ya more because someone else has elbow grease into them) OR perhaps you can build your own bender with the equipment you already own.
      Or put your equipment to use in other areas to make the funds to buy a bender, manual ones are getting pretty cheap these days so it probably wouldn't take to long of saving up to acquire one.

    • @TheFabricatorSeries
      @TheFabricatorSeries  8 лет назад

      +DanOfTheNorth You still have to know how to measure and find the correct angle in order to load it into the software. I usually relate it to using a calculator - you had to know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide before you started using it. Otherwise, you'd be SOL without it. Software makes many things easy, but you still need to know how it is done.

    • @bellofello1
      @bellofello1 8 лет назад

      The Fabricator I'm not so sure about that. I had zero experience with tubes or bending or notching before I started. Every tube I've bent, or notched using the software has come out exact to the mm and fit flawlessly.
      Without the software, yes I'd be forced to re-learn my ways.

    It seems to me that you would need the chassis level and on jack stands to start. If not, your weight on one side or the other while measuring would cause the angles of your bends to be off.

      +The Fabricator You might try the "Pro Lavalier Lapel Microphone JK MIC-J 044" available for $29 from Amazon. That particular one is as good or better than much more expensive mics. It will pug into something like a Zoom H1 or equivalent digital recorder that you can wear. Then add in your high-quality audio in post, using the camera audio track peaks for alignment, then delete the camera audio.

    • @TheFabricatorSeries
      @TheFabricatorSeries  8 лет назад

      I'll look into that, but I worry about wearing a mic. It will be exposed to all the dust and metal more so than one that hangs from the ceiling above (at least I assume it would). But it's cheap enough I guess.

    • @loganmclendon2086
      @loganmclendon2086 8 лет назад

      +The Fabricator check B &H you can get a really good wired mic for like $30 and a good wireless for like $200 (lavalier style that clips to your shirt). If you want a mic that mounts on the camera (shotgun/ directional style) you can get a cheap one for $30 or really good one for $200. Rode and Audio Technica are really good brands to look at.

    I didn't look through all the comments but why do you tig weld all the tubing, then mig weld the rocker boxes? Also, I like your videos. I'm an offroad guy but I still learn from you. I like the tube bending and notching videos the most. Thanks.

    • @TheFabricatorSeries
      @TheFabricatorSeries  8 лет назад

      +Tony Briley Most of it is accessibility. The other part is the metal itself on the chassis. Some chassis use galvanized metal which literally explodes when you weld it (Mazda and Toyota are pretty famous for it). If you try to weld with the TIG, the metal blows straight to the tungsten. If you puddle with a MIG and allow it to flow into the sheet metal, it is less likely to blow up in your face.
      There are also some places where the TIG torch wont reach or fit into well. Other times it's just the time it takes to TIG vs MIG when the result is nearly the same.

    Why don’t you use 1-5/8” for the main cage so it can also be used in NHRA 8.50 certified racing?
    Perhaps the owner would like to drag race the car at some point, it’s better to build it once that will pass tech in a variety of racing.
    From NHRA website
    “The tubing size requirement on 8.50 cages are 1 5/8-inch x . 118-inch mild steel or . 083-inch chromoly. “
    Keep up the good work and informative videos!

    Is there any reason you switched from the tig to Mig for the rocker boxes?

    +The Fabricator This is an outstanding video with great explanation. I have one question though, Don't you need to cover the wires to keep the MIG sparks from damaging the insulation on the wires? I have seen it burn through very quickly which could lead to some nasty electrical gremlins.

      +Brian Schmidt I usually worry more about heat than sparks as a killer for wires, but sparks are worth keeping in mind. I've never had an issue.

    build go carts or dune buggy frames to get going. you really need to sell vids and show extended times for the novice. there are always questions but you do a great job. searh s&w. they are local and started out the same way you are. you have to crawl before you can run

    I really appreciate your videos. They are instructive and well done. I’m using what I am learning to build my first cage. I have the main loop bent to fir, and have formed the floor plates to fit. Now I need to weld it all to the car. Where is the best place to put the ground for the welder?

    Are you tig welding using a pedal or 2T/4T? I only ever tig while sitted at a bench and could only imagine the difficulty of working a pedal inside a race car

    Ideally the roof bar would be at opposite corners so the A pillar wouldn't collapse inward
