  • On February 3, 1981, Rodney Dangerfield, the king of one-liners, stopped by the Tonight Show to share some laughs with Johnny Carson, the king of late night.
    1:32 “I got hit by a car. I told the guy, ‘Are you blind?’ He said, ‘I hit you, didn’t I?’”
    2:17 “What a childhood I had. My mother never breastfed me. She always had a headache.”
    4:50 “I’m not sexy at all. I went to the sperm bank. They used my sperm to get a woman pregnant. They had to get her drunk first.”
    6:25 “I have no sex life. The only sex I have is when my doctor tells me to cough.”

    Basically Rodney does a killer stand up monologue and then instead of a mindless interview he gives a killer sitting down monologue. This man Dangerfield was peerless.

      Exactly. I read an interview w/ Rodney where he talked about rehearsing every second of these appearances. He prepared for weeks as he understood the impact that these had on his career. There's one Carson clip on RUclips where he kind of bombed. It turns out a studio had pushed him to make an unscheduled visit to push a movie and he was obviously very uncomfortable.

      Hopefully you're not referring to Johnny's reaction when Rodney asks him... "Well, what do you want to do now?" Because that was completely genuine. Sure - Johnny and Rodney had a routine set in advance, but that was pure improv and genuine laughter from Carson! One of my all time favorites.

      @jpwjr1199 4 года назад +9

      True, but even more importantly, as polished a host as he was, there was an authenticity in his support for many of the celebrities he had on then that just isn't present in the hosts of that time slot on NBC since. Carson admiring his work by simply taking a breath and simply saying that Rodney's funny before cutting to the sponsors keeps the stage actors human for the audience. That connection is what keeps folks wanting to watch. Conan could have had that had he been given a real chance. Personally, with all the channels now, as well as computers/internet, and with TV going the way of AM radio in the 1970's and 80's, NBC should just scrap Tonight, move on and do something different.

    Sometimes, when i feel down i watch Rodney and make me laugh. Even though i never met this guy, i love him. And no matter how many times i've watched him, i never get bored. We live in an era with shallow comedians and lots of swearing. Rodney brings the nostalgic years of the 70s and the 80s. Such a talent comes once in the lifetime.

    And that, folks, is what's called A MASTER AT WORK.
    This may be the episode of The Tonight Show I saw in the early-1980s which I remember being absolutely hysterical at 12:00 midnight while watching Rodney work. That man will always remain a national treasure, IMHO. God Rest His Soul.

    One of my favorite things is to watch Johnny throw lines to Rodney . Johnny was a fine comedian but way under rated as a straight man! (Not an easy job!!)

      Johnny was confident in his own talent, and he knew when another comedian was killing it it was also good for him and the show.

    His jokes are more timeless than music. I love the crowd interaction with Rodney. As soon as he walked passed those curtains you knew he would work the crowd like a boss, and commandeer the show. Straight up showstopper and the best of all time. Doesn't even cuss in his acts...crazy!

    In my Mount Rushmore of stand up comics..these guy is the first! He is the absolute true king of the one liners...bar None..and for me, it's not even close..Eddie Murphy, Robin Williams and Richard Pryor are the others on my Mt Rushmore but this guy...this guy never offended anyone except himself. Hard to walk out of a show if the only persons who he ever disparages is his family or himself. Today's comics and comedians couldn't even be his ashtray. Far and away our best comedian EVER!!!!! I miss you and your nervous twitches...

    I am 46 years old. Yes i lived the 80's and only 3 years of the 70's. So as me being a baby in the 70's i can't say i had memories. But for sone reason when i watch movies from the 60's and 70's i feel a nostalgic sorrow. Although i wasn't even born back then, when i watch movies or even think of those years, then somehow a feeling of happiness and childhood's innocence floods my heart. Maybe because back then, people and the way of living and romance were so much more innocent and there were no such media garbages and modern trends of today..!
    God, if somehow i could live some moments of glimpse from those years from that glorious past after i die and live them for a while...
