Basically Rodney does a killer stand up monologue and then instead of a mindless interview he gives a killer sitting down monologue. This man Dangerfield was peerless.
Exactly. I read an interview w/ Rodney where he talked about rehearsing every second of these appearances. He prepared for weeks as he understood the impact that these had on his career. There's one Carson clip on RUclips where he kind of bombed. It turns out a studio had pushed him to make an unscheduled visit to push a movie and he was obviously very uncomfortable.
Hopefully you're not referring to Johnny's reaction when Rodney asks him... "Well, what do you want to do now?" Because that was completely genuine. Sure - Johnny and Rodney had a routine set in advance, but that was pure improv and genuine laughter from Carson! One of my all time favorites.
Simply the best of all time, Johnny Carson and Rodney, I miss those guys. Everybody laughing, no thin skinned sensitive people, just good people having a good time. What a great time in life

We live in an era with shallow comedians and lots of swearing. Rodney brings the nostalgic years of the 70s and the 80s. Such a talent comes once in the lifetime.
When Carson left and all those great comics started passing away, they should have just ended the late night talk show tv genre. It will never be as good again.

True, but even more importantly, as polished a host as he was, there was an authenticity in his support for many of the celebrities he had on then that just isn't present in the hosts of that time slot on NBC since. Carson admiring his work by simply taking a breath and simply saying that Rodney's funny before cutting to the sponsors keeps the stage actors human for the audience. That connection is what keeps folks wanting to watch. Conan could have had that had he been given a real chance. Personally, with all the channels now, as well as computers/internet, and with TV going the way of AM radio in the 1970's and 80's, NBC should just scrap Tonight, move on and do something different.
Great stuff! Rodney D did a 3rd variant on the breast-feeding joke. In other clips he said his mother never breast-fed him because she just liked him as a friend or that she breast-fed him with a straw.
