This is the best cut on London Calling. It's the definition of hard driving Rock & Roll. I saw the The Clash in Munich Germany May 14, 1980 when I worked security. We confiscated a box full of chains, a dozen switchblades and two revolvers. Rough crowd. Fantastic Concert. They played most everything off London Calling and the majority of Sandinista! I saw them again in SF during the Combat Rock tour as well, but it just did not have the same electrical jolt as Munich which will be stored in my memory banks forever.
Wish I'd seen 'em live too. I should've... that cover photo on London Calling was taken at the Armadillo World HQ in Austin, and I lived nearby, dammit...
Saw the Clash two times. First at a concert in Paris organised by a left wing newspaper named Rouge.A hundred of real anarchists which called themselves autonomists tried to enter without paying for a ticket so the security service of the left wing fighted them during the Clash concert in front of the stage. Joe was laughing watching that. It was at this concert that it was said Joe got hepatitis after someone spat on him. Think it's 1978.Second time in 1979 also in Paris The Clash was big at this time. It was after Sandinista. I preferred the first concert coz I preferred the first two albums.
Saw the Clash in 1980 in San Francisco, at 17 years old i was amazed at the thrashing violence in the mosh pit in front of the stage. Had my first drink in a bar that night and wont ever forget the intensity of London Calling.
Have you heard of They Might Be Giants? Their album "Flood" was an eye-opener for me. Before then, I had never heard an album, all from the same band, present me with a new genre of music with literally every one of its dozen+ pieces. It didn't set a new standard or anything (hard to expect that kind of musicianship from everyone), but it did endear me to them greatly. Granted, some of the tracks might need to grow on ya (Minimum Wage comes to mind). Still, it's one of my favorites!
London Calling was a miracle! They took the power of the 1st 2 albums, put in some finesse, and voila! I had a big loud stereo in 1980 and Brand New Cadillac was its favorite menu item!
I know--saw them twice--Bonds NYC and Asbury Park convention hall.Joe Strummer once said "we sucked that whole tour. except that one show in New Jersey"....
This doesn't have to be "best" song on Album. But it is a perfect hard driving rampage of sound followed by the more meandering "JImmy Jazz" which sets a pace of ebb and flow to the songs that make an arrangement of perfection on this Great Album. You can no more say this is the best song as much as a Mother could state which child of her brood she loves most. You can say, though, this collection of songs makes for one of the Greatest Albums ever. And Brand New Cadillac gives the Whole a part of that driving Rock n Roll back beat which defines this genre slipping and stylistic sliding of tempo and greatness that stands the rest of time.
The best song they ever did. One good thing about this band is one guy played a Tele and one played a Les Paul. Great sound combination. One of my fav guitar solos is on this song.
Back in the day I recorded this from the LP onto a cassette tape so I could listen to it in the car, the cassette player was battery operated and, unbeknown to me, the batteries were running out and it was very slowly slowing down while it was recording. Consequently, when I played it back, it had the effect that the song gradually got slightly faster and faster towards the end, it was absolutely brilliant! Is there a way this can be done with modern technology?
Saw The Clash thrice, though once was the tour without Mick Jones or Topper Headon. Saw Strummer solo twice in Tokyo and I very well remember him playing this song. His intro was: ``There's really only two rock'n'roll songs, and this is one of 'em ...''
@@menelaos2554 I don't quite recall. I think someone immediately yelled out, "What's the other" ... but I don't think he answered. I do recall that this was a matter of some discussion with my friends after the show. We did not arrive at any consensus...
Completely agree, a classic 50's bass sound and line with a classic 80's punk guitar, the perfect sample of rock'n'roll. 70 years later, Rock'n'roll still makes me react.
@@ChrisCrossClash I hesitated between 70's and 80's before making a choice. I thought that Led Zepelin, Deep Purple and lot of other band were more representative of 70's guitar sound than the Clash and that's why I finally chose 80's. Punk Rock came in the late 70's and were starting a different approach of the guitar more based on sound than on technic. No more 5mn guitar solo but heavy dirty sound aded with lyrics talking more about their audience daily life. And it led to the 80's guitar song still based on sound even if they were given a "second role to leave more room to the keyboards. (no need to tell you it wasn't my favourite period as I'm a drummer and I wouldn't have been one only with 80's kind of music). And I think The Clash career has more year in the 80's than the 70's, hasn't it ? Anyway, I always known them as a 80's rock band more than 70's, an other reason of my choice. That's the reason behind my 80's choice.
I happen to catch this tune totally by surprise on a local University student-run radio station here in western Canada today. I had totally forgotten about it

Because of the class war. This is anti-bourgeois, it will never be advertised on TV or radio, or anywhere that money dominates.
