Lyrics
Hey, hey!
Ooh!
The kingdom is ransacked
the jewels all taken back
and the chopper descends
they're hidden in the back
with a message on a half-baked tape
with the spool going round
saying I'm back here in this place
and I could cry
and there's smoke you could click on
What are we gonna do now?
Taking off his turban, they said, is this man a Jew?
'Cause they're working for the clampdown
They put up a poster saying we earn more than you!
When we're working for the clampdown
We will teach our twisted speech
To the young believers
We will train our blue-eyed men
To be young believers
The judge said five to ten, but I say double that again
I'm not working for the clampdown
No man born with a living soul
Can be working for the clampdown
Kick over the wall 'cause government's to fall
How can you refuse it?
Let fury have the hour, anger can be power
D'you know that you can use it?
The voices in your head are calling
Stop wasting your time, there's nothing coming
Only a fool would think someone could save you
The men at the factory are old and cunning
You don't owe nothing, so boy get running
It's the best years of your life they want to steal
You grow up and you calm down
You're working for the clampdown
You start wearing the blue and brown
You're working for the clampdown
So you got someone to boss around
It makes you feel big now
You drift until you brutalize
You made your first kill now
In these days of evil presidentes
Working for the clampdown
But lately one or two has fully paid their due
For working for the clampdown
Ha! Gitalong! Gitalong!
Working for the clampdown
Ha! Gitalong! Gitalong!
Working for the clampdown
Yeah I'm working hard in Harrisburg
Working hard in Petersburg
Working for the clampdown
Working for the clampdown
Ha! Gitalong! Gitalong
Begging to be melted down
Gitalong, gitalong

Who's barmy now?
I was obsessed with the Clash and owned every album released foreign and domestic..My parents thought there was something wrong with me. My headphones were permanently attached to my ears. I'm almost 50 now and I'm listening to the clash while cleaning lol
There clearly was something wrong with you. You didn't have massive speakers to blast The Clash and had to settle for headphones instead. That's a rough upbringing!
Are your parents o.k? This isn't a norman bates thing , is it?
legend
there WAS something ""Wrong"" with you , Thank Goodness
😎👍
52 and will still be Listening til the incinerator has melted my Lugs 😂🎵🎸🎤🎚️❤️
This entire album is perfection to me. The seamless blending of so many genres with Joe spitting home truths and lyrics about the people. The Clash were truly one of a kind
Underrated album & band as a whole.
@@Pumpmaximum13 how is the album underrated when it was voted 8th best album of all time by rolling stone numnuts
@@bazookajoe6760 What album? See.
No doubt a great album. Not only was the Cover iconic there were a bunch of awesome songs. It was so raw and in your face, a basic slap in the face to most of the stuff that preceded it ( pretty much Prog Rock and that stuff). The Clash was like lightning in a bottle. "The Guns of Brixton" is one of my favorites along with "Spanish Bombs".
Indeed One of my Favorite Albums of all time!
One of the greatest albums ever made.
The greatest
AGREED
I prefer Give Em Enough Rope
The coolest ever
Somehow The Clash's music gets fresher as time goes by. This song is more inspiring today than it was when it came out.
ok boomer
NO it isn't I was there! what you might've meant was that its still held up. peace
It gets more meaningful . in these Days of EVIL 👿 presidentes . Not to mention incoherent , power-mad and disgustingly war-mongering
In the UK a response to Thatcher. In the U.S. now good for our witnessing of our Democracy being destroyed bt Trumpsters/Republicans.
True
Back in the day, my Mom used to let me Crank the Clash until my Dad came home from work. Thanks Mom! RIP. ❤
I got stick for listening to the pistols and the clash, came home early from school one day, me mam was bopping around to Janie Jones (full blast)
For myself and my sibs, Saturday mom worked and dad was running the day. Half-hour of loud rock and roll while cleaning, then a half hour
break to watch wrestling, repeat as
necessary.
The ONLY way to listen to the Clash. This music was my escape from the pap disco trash at the time.
Amen brother.
One of the 5 best bands of all time. And one of the few truly perfect albums of the rock era. Every song hit in 1979 and still hits
go on drop the other 4?
Other 4?
Who would you say are the four other greatest bands? Very curious to know, genuinely as well, no sarcasm here.
In my opinion, at this time:
The WHO
Wilco/Uncle Tupelo
Yo La Tengo
The Pretenders
Currently enjoying
Viagra Boys
Amyl and the Sniffers
I'm 55, and this still gets me hopping. The lyrics are pearls of wisdom.
It is bangin
This is without question my All Time favorite Clash song!!!! This should definitely be The Clash's signature song!!
London Calling is such a legendary album! Also I LOVE this song
"Let fury have the hour, anger can be power. Do you know that you can use it?" One of my favourite songs by one of my all time favourite bands. I wish I was born in their time to see them. All the people who have are so lucky and I 100% envy you.
That lyric snippet pretty perfectly describes our times. Somebody was paying attention back then, but didn't get the irony.
The Clash - the only band that mattered.
Whilst The Jam were the best band in the f^^king world & now its all safe & corporate!
This is so fuckin' good. This album is perfection. Not to mention a perfect cover.
And here we are. Living in the Clampdown.

I wouldn't go that far but he was solid
Very true ,he could play jazz, funk style drums and played guitar and piano.
@@electricleg207 one of the Best and most Tasteful drummers Ever . dont think he ever just showed off cuz he could .
Let's not talk crazy
This album Changed my Life! It really is one of the most unique Punk albums ever. I just discovered Punk In my early thirties and I am awakened.
It speaks volumes to the band's actual talent and wisdom just how prescient and relevant the lyrics managed to be over 4 decades after its initial release. Fantastic album and band.
Well said
My favorite 80s band. No nonsense lyrics.
yeyayeayea hey
70s/80s
I remember the first time I heard this album back in 1981. It blew me away and is still a revelation to listen to 40 years later!
No one ever talks about Paul Simonon! Totally underrated bassist
Agreed... the silent assassin !!
He went from having the Note painted on his FretBoard , to being recognized as a good Bassist by the Jamaican community . 'nuff said ?
@Suzuki Adventure Norman Watt-Roy created the Bassline for magnificent seven.
No one mentions him in HAVANA 3:am. 🎶🎸👍
and he was the prettiest clash by the way
Let fury have the hour, anger can be power
@Jon Birch YOU KNOW THAT YOU CAN USE IT
@Jon Birch Mine too.
Me too
"Anger is an energy"
Which jojo character is that
I really love that guitar riff at the intro... with that speaking voice! 💜
I never noticed that someone was speaking there until I saw your comment.

Rolling Stone rated this album the 16th greatest of all time.
When you look at the really great ones it's just splitting hairs to say one's better than another. Call it 1st, 16th, 52nd, whatever, there still isn't truly a *better* album than this
@@socalraps7850 that's fair.
As someone who rarely ever listens to the lyrics the first time (or even the first few; I tend to seek out the bass first), The Clash is a band whose songs get infinitely better once I find out what they're saying. Man they have powerful lyrics.
This album has a magick to it
Here in 2022 The Clampdown is more pertinent than ever! Have loved this album for 40 frick'n years!
Due to corporate capitalism!

Who's barmy now ?
I believe it's more like:
The kingdom was ransacked
the jewels all taken back
and the chopper descends
they hid it in the back
and they switched it on and off
but the tape of spool just ends (I gotta get out!)
he said I'm back in this place
he hid is face in a crack
but they said there's a click on the lens
Google lyrics is definitely wrong. Nothing about a half-baked potato or half-baked tape.
Saw the Clash at Newcastle Mayfair June 12 1980. I'm now 62, cue nostalgia music....but it still feels like last week! They were fantastic.
I love how Joe so casually adds in
"And I give away no secrets!"
Really makes you realize alot of the things our own governments do to us, that we consider so wrong, are in plain sight.
I saw them in my backyard venue, a.k.a Red Rocks during their Combat Rock tour in ' 82. A lovely view of heaven from the best musical venue in this galaxy, that I'm aware of.
Incredible, I had no idea red rocks as a venue was so old. Not that you're so old, friend ;)
Saw them do this at Glasgow Apollo 1981. Highlight of the set.
The first thing Joe says is so badass. His voice is ridiculously good.
"...Anger can be power...!!!" You would be well-advised to remember that---those of you who foster and perpetuate "the clampdown"
and/or "the man." God bless the true "punks" of this world. Peace!!!😎
My favourite Clash song 😎
The Real thing!!
I’m so happy full of emotions I don’t remember the last time I’ve felt this way I’m smiling and laughing out of pure joy

the bit that starts at 1:34 is so good i love it
My mama bought the double tape for my 14th birthday, i bet my sister told her what the music i like. Still do.
Turned on in 77 when Peter Townshend mentioned them as his favorite band to go see in and around the London club scene. Bought in Big Time! All the Spinoffs; 101ers Mescaleros, A D.

Reminds me of my childhood. Walking past brothers bedroom and hearing the Clash blasting out.
