Song Lyrics:
[Intro]
Well, we know where we're goin'
But we don't know where we've been
And we know what we're knowin'
But we can't say what we've seen
And we're not little children
And we know what we want
And the future is certain
Give us time to work it out
[Verse 1]
We're on a road to nowhere
Come on inside
Takin' that ride to nowhere
We'll take that ride
I'm feelin' okay this mornin'
And you know
We're on a road to paradise
Here we go, here we go
[Verse 2]
We're on a ride to nowhere
Come on inside
Takin' that ride to nowhere
We'll take that ride
Maybe you wonder where you are
I don't care
Here is where time is on our side
Take you there, take you there
[Chorus]
We're on a road to nowhere
We're on a road to nowhere
We're on a road to nowhere
[Bridge]
There's a city in my mind
Come along and take that ride
And it's all right, baby it's all right
And it's very far away
But it's growing day by day
And it's all right, baby it's all right
Would you like to come along?
And you could help me sing this song
And it's all right, baby it's all right
They can tell you what to do
But they'll make a fool of you
And it's all right, baby it's all right
There's a city in my mind
Come along and take that ride
And it's all right, baby it's all right
And it's very far away
But it's growing day by day
And it's all right, baby it's all right
Would you like to come along?
You could help me sing this song
And it's all right, baby it's all right
They can tell you what to do
But they'll make a fool of you
And it's all right, baby it's all right
[Chorus]
We're on a road to nowhere
We're on a road to nowhere
We're on a road to nowhere
We're on a road to nowhere

Talking Heads' existential crises songs are timeless. They ALWAYS apply
They sure do😅
Not really, burning down the house, almost but not quite.

It is a joke, and a tribute. Mr. Byrne was a trendsetter...
I particularly like the sequence of Chris and Tina meeting, dancing, getting married, having a child, watching the child grow up, turning old and grey and still being in love like crazy birds -- because that's EXACTLY how they turned out!
I read Chris Frantz's book last year and it is very sweet how crazy he is still about Tina

It's my favorite part of the video.
This answers my question, thanks much!!!
This is the kind of song which someone could have written at any point in time, an eternal message. Just needed a visionary like talking heads to materialise it. Timeless and stunning

You mean like how the human race is going no where because the governments are controlling us
The older I get the more this song hits me emotionally.
I cry everytime😅😅
That's because you are on that road, as are we all, lest there be an afterlife.
My old man wanted this played at his funeral..... Bless him he taught me how to laugh
Never has a song with such an upbeat tempo made me so sad 😞
@@stephenl7048 Honestly, from the descriptions given of the Afterlife by the major religions, I don't know that it fundamentally changes the point in any way.
Hell, without redemption, is just sadism. Heaven is just an even more insidious version of Hell, when you know there's good people burning down there and there's nothing you can do, as there is no redemption from that pointless eternal sadism - and the Biblically accurate description is eternal worship slavery to an insatiable ego. Nirvana is basically a synonym of oblivion - and it's longing to end the eternal torment to finally find a true restful death.
Like, do any of these Afterlives sound like they negate the notion of being on a "Road to Nowhere"?
None of this offers a conclusion. None of this offers any useful explanation. None of it invalidates that opening verse in the slightest.
Life is suffering.
“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams..
St. Augustine on time,
“This time is longer than that,” or, more precisely, “This is twice as long as that.” I know that I am measuring time. But I am not measuring the future, for it is not yet; and I am not measuring the present because it is extended by no length; and I am not measuring the past because it no longer is. What is it, therefore, that I am measuring? Is it time in its passage, but not time past?”
Genius quote, thanks for sharing.
And this is why I always read the comments. Thanks.

Most underrated band when people talk about "greatest bands of the 70s/80s with longevity". Everything they did was perfect. From the hits to the deep cuts. So far ahead of everyone else.

The end sequence to "Little Monsters" set to this, running across the world, from bed to bed, will NEVER leave my mind. This song is truly timeless!
40+ year old guy here. One of my favorite movies, and that ending has never once failed to break me. So sad watching him say goodbye to his best friend, and as soon as "Well we know where we're goin" kicks in, I'm dead.

There is no better explanation of the nature of human experience then this video. Thank you David for being part of me. Pure genius. Much love here for you.
But nowhere is something else, isn't it ! Has always & will always be *That* song which transcends all others for it's simple yet vast understanding of our small existence here on our tiny *Blue Marble*.
A few years ago I suffered from a very traumatic experience, recently a few days ago, I've been finding myself reliving the traumatic experience over and over again, and I decided to put on this song and it made me feel as though everything is going to be alright, and has helped me to move past this trauma, and so I've been listening to this song nonstop and I'm feeling happier. Thank you David Byrne and the rest of the Talking Heads, I don't know what you did with this song, but it's really helped me out.
I believe in your ability to overcome. you're doing great. I had a similar experience, we'll get through this.
Beautiful songs do soothe the soul, and can remind us tomorrow morning might not even come, it wasn’t promised. Yet with good music, we can see beyond, on this road to nowhere we all share. Stay strong, sending you prayers, positive vibes, and hope that it really will be alright, for you very soon, for all of us. When feeling low, remember ultimately, it’s about that climb~put on a playlist, and dance while sing your heart out💃Good luck to you.

The video makes it hurt a lot more than just the song, I guess. I think it's the best example of stoicism put into words that I've ever heard. Or seen. It's a celebration of the futility of life.
Fun fact: This video was directed by Stephen R. Johnson, who also directed the video for Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer. This explains the stop motion at 2:55, which is strikingly similar to some of the animation from Sledgehammer.
So that's why I was feeling nostalgic towards this bit. I used to watch sledgehammer very often when I was 5 years old or something
@NerdyCannon- Do you know which came out first?
Allison Titcomb talking heads video came out first in 1985, then in 1986 peter gabriel’s video..

OMG!!! Yes! Literally just watched this movie 3 days ago.
This song really has a positive message [about marriage and staying together] and not many people do that these days. I have liked this song for a long time.
No it doesn't its about how we are all controlled by the government so are going nowhere
The part at 2:56 is not only my favorite part of the actual song but also the greatest part in the mv. Cannot fathom how much time that gorgeous stop motion took. So much going on, incredible.
I'm watching this for the first time because the professor of rock mentioned this Talking Heads video in his video about Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer!
Agreed!
My favourite part is 0:46
Have to agree. And after decades of watching this video, especially the stop motion sequence, I've only just noticed this time that his tie is 'scrolling'... did they change it for each damn frame?!? There is a timeless quality not only to their songs but also the lyrics which seem relevant even 30+ years later.

That's perfect.
When I was a kid in the 80s, I recorded this song off the local AM radio station, using my parent's mono radio-cassette, onto a blank tape. I listened to it over and over. I loved it.
I used to love taping songs off the radio. Free stuff! I think that's the reason why DJs at the time used to talk over the intros / outros though.
WHAT A FKN' FANTASTIC TIME THAT WAS !!!
All of us were doing that. It was our hobby back then...at least mine. Was sooo much fun!
Glad for owning a HI-FI system in my teenage years back then....which i still have, also all those tapes. Here in Germany we had music chartshows, where the songs were fully played, even many extended ones. But always used the fade function anyway.
Sony got filthy rich enabling music piracy. Those Walkmans and recorders and blank tapes galore, and tape-to-tape duplicating machines so you could pass tapes to all your friends. Everybody was doing it. With those profits they bought the privilege to sue pirates in court for putting Beatles on a mix tape. Wagging their fingers because copying music is a crime. What a low down trick.
I hope that you have at least a Walkman nowLOL
Beutiful, brilliant, fantastic road to no where, i love this song, my grown- up children tell me how they grew- up listening to me playing this song over and over and yes, i am still playing it over and over. its one of MY favourite 80s anthems. The 80s were a blast. Wonderful❤🎉😂👏👏👏

I still can't understand why Talking Heads doesn't have more views.
This is a new upload that David Byrne added in March. Previously, there was an unauthorized upload that had well over a million views. This one is much higher quality. (Thanks, David Byrne)
Give a break. They are a BRILLIANT band. David Byrne is a literally genius who has gifted the world with his own quirky and unusual sense of humor, intelligence, wit, political awareness, concern about the World In General. They are really amazing and David himself is my favorite of course...but I never have had an opportunity to see The Heads or even David Byrne's solo concert live. I would love to see either, but just being with the kind of crowd that would come...in legion...to see The Talking Heads play just one reunion world tour for all the fans, would be a life-altering experience. SO many great bands I love and have never seen live: The Cure, Depeche Mode (MAYBE saw them one time, I have a faint memory), New Order, The Smiths, REM, The B-52's, Sting & Or The Police, The Rolling Stones, (can't afford the damn $500 tickets!), Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Doors, Jimi, Janis, Nirvana, only got to see U2 ONCE in concert and the audio was fucked up so Bono sounded like he was sucking helium all night. The Talking Heads...like The Violent Femmes, Sublime, (saw Garbage play with No Doubt once...GREAT show!
There would be a million YOUNG people. That's how great this band is. Even teenagers would be there. This music is timeless.
Well that's your opinion but they are more than good enough in a lot of peoples eyes.

This brings me back to Nashville in 1985 right around the time I went out for a ride and I never went back. Divorce. I left after 7 years. I was just learning to live. 26 years old and working with the best friends I've ever had, also my bosses. Had a fungi connect in California and the whole next year was a celebration of me being re born. That was 40 fkn years ago.... This song puts me right back on lower Broadway Street and cruising east Tennessee with my woman and a headful. Beautiful state, beautiful people... The beautiful people... Talking Heads will always be my go to music for a good time.

One of the first records I ever bought. Still have the 7 inch single from 1985. Wanted to become a pop video director in my teens largely as a result of this video and Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer. Watch out for the animation of the running man drawn in peanut butter on a slice of bread at 3:20. Pure genius!
Great comment! Yeah, I agree, the are such creative and interesting videos. I also really love the video for "All I Want Is You" By U2...have you ever seen it? The one with the circus act, the midget and the beautiful lady in love with the strong man?
almost as genius as spotting it.
Doesnt surprise me Byrne was first to the stop motion
Woke up with this song in my head. It's going to be my 2025 anthem.
Another extremely overlooked, under apreciated band.
Brilliant song then, and stood the test of time. Thank you David Byrne for a phenomenal concert on the American Utopia tour.
I never knew who the talking heads were when I was a kid. I loved little monsters and I fell in love with this song. Here I am so many years later. I am so thankful they were associated with that movie. I can't explain how visceral it is when they come on the radio.
This song is #1 on my Road Trip playlist
Thanksgiving 2018 and I am thankful for the free Talking Heads music on RUclips!
Talking Heads age like wine.
Allen Bennet 😯
