My teacher printed off these lyrics and gave them to us to study as a poem. It wasn't until after that he told us that it was a song by the clash. Fell in love with the band ever since then
That's G'in!
Wow
Never happened
@@thetonypyo prove it then bud
i love the clash all of there songs
If this was the only song they ever created they would still be one of the greatest bands ever.
This song is like the godfather of all modern indie rock
*This band
lol i thought the cure was the godfather of modern indie rock
Tought
The clash did it first... they did everything first
Dude they thought they were punk .
I sing this song every time I go to the store. Some people get it, some don't.

Good to know I'm not the only one.
Find myself doing that since I was 12yrs old. Another good one is death or glory
"I empty a bottle, I feel a bit free". A heart-rending line.
Different song but classic line....
‘When I had me a great deal of money I had mighty good friends all over town. Now I ain’t got no more money an’ all of my good friends just put me down’
‘Give me whisky when I’m thirsty, gimme a headstone when I die’

For me it's the "I wasn't born so much as I fell out."
@@JayZombie1216 agree
How about: " I wasn't born so much as I fell out" ?
I'm gonna empty a bottle tonight.
The uncertainty of this song reminds me of what it's like living with social anxiety and depression.
And shopping addiction
why it reminds you that? it's not about it
@@lorenzopacchia9189 I think that's a legit interpretation. Crazy consumerism in our societies surely is a good friend of depression. You don't matter as a person because the point of the world you live in is to make money and buy things. At first you think you're happy because you have material things, but then you begin to understand that life is more than that and that you can't buy happiness/serenity with money. After that epiphany, it's easy to fall in a state of chronic depression, which is due to our without-morals and capitalistic society.
@@tatianawilliams yes i think so

This song makes me want to sob. The feeling of the end of childhood. The feeling right after you finish a long TV show. The feeling right before or after a breakup. The feeling of the summer between high school and college. Walking home after the last day of school.
I know darn tootin what you mean when I just finished being in 12 Angry Jurors for 5 months directed by the most popular guy in drama class in high school and juicing every drop I can for my channel. “Don’t frown because it’s over, smile because it happened.” -Dr. Seuss
This track could easily be on a John Hughes film soundtrack.
Well said. I could never quite explain the feeling as well as you just did.
Ahhh man nostalgia just hit me bad
Your dying pet finally dies...

im 59 and was an english teenager also made an impact on my troubled youth . and yes i still listen to the music that made my time as a teen
God, what an amazing song. It captures so many ideas and emotions within: the vapidity of modern society, and the alienation and isolation it causes, issues with depression and social anxiety that arise out of said alienation, the works. Truly, this is an all-time classic.
That’s the beauty of the clash they sing about deep themes in an almost happy manor so if you don’t listen closely to the lyrics you’d think it was a happy song. This is why I love Spanish bombs it sounds like a happy song until you actually listen to what the lyrics are saying
This song and Straight to Hell are my favorites
It’s very tacky to over read into the lyrics
@@terrance7220 You clearly don't know much about the Clash if you think that's "over reading"
@@terrance7220 do you even know the band? theyre very explicitly political & leftist and care about the issues the other person mentioned
Underrated song.
I heard it on Daria :)
@@DRAIK08080808 I heard it somewhere else
No, this album is considered one of the greatest rock albums by many so I don't think this song is underrated
not really
Underrated by who? Plastic fans?
This song is almost 50 years old and is not even in my native tongue, but this is the only song with lyrics I can really relate myself to. The emptiness of mundane suburban life, with a soft melancholy riff that somehow stings...it's just perfection!

the best disco song of 79!
This might be one of the most ahead of its time songs ever. Everything from the drums and vocals to even the guitar tone is so modern sounding that if they released it as a modern indie song today, it would still sound fresh, and is still lyrically relevant.
It’s a shame this song never got the same mainstream appeal as some of their other big radio hits because this track is incredible.
Always felt the same way. Has a very "2005" sound.
Thank you Ben Folds and "Over the Hedge" for introducing me to this banger when I was a child
I literally just found out this song wasnt originally by ben folds. Even this original fits so well with his rockin the suburbs album and the voice is even very similar. Now i gotta listen to this whole album. Im hype!😊😊🎉🎉
If any song deserves a 3rd verse it's this one
Yessssssssss we need it
Best band of the 80's period!!!!
These guys weren't just a bunch of pretty boys who looked good on fancy videos, but a real band who always had a great raw rock sound.
[Chorus]
I'm all lost in the supermarket
I can no longer shop happily
I came in here for that special offer
A guaranteed personality
I wasn't born so much as I fell out
Nobody seemed to notice me
We had a hedge back home in the suburbs
Over which I never could see
I heard the people who lived on the ceiling
Scream and fight most scarily
Hearing that noise was my first ever feeling
That's how it's been all around me
[Chorus]
I'm all tuned in, I see all the programmes
I save coupons from packets of tea
I've got my giant hit discoteque album
I empty a bottle and I feel a bit free
The kids in the halls and the pipes in the walls
Make me noises for company
Long distance callers make long distance calls
And the silence makes me lonely
[Chorus]
And it's not here
It disappeared
I'm all lost
You're on all the good songs man thanks
It's great!! I like the terminations on "e"!!! I'm french and i don't know if terminations is the good word... I love the Clash, forever since London Calling.

I LITERALLY LISTENED TO THIS AT IKEA YESTERDAY OMG
Literally just left Ikea with this song stuck in my head. That's why I listened to it in the first place.
"Long distance callers make long distance calls"
I felt that line...
One of the best intros in any song I've heard. It gets me every time.
absolutley
I love the way Micks voice sounds, it's such a good song
I love his voice too. Vulnerability, combined somehow with the irony that was the Clash's hallmark. Amazing song
@@lisayee2362 He has such an expressive way of singing and it feels like his natural voice rather than someone who had years of vocal training to sing a certain way. It's very real. Joe also had a very expressive voice but a different vocal quality. Their voices really were perfect for the band.
Always love the clash even when people talk shit, rolled with a girl I was madly in love with at Walmart, she was pushing my wheelchair while everyone was smiling and felt like a king , I miss her always and this gem brings me back stronger ..
The genius of the Clash. A profound song about the supermarket - who knew. Can't believe it was so long ago though....where did all that time go??
This song essentially sums up my relationship with society. A true Classic
It sums up my feeling as a child and young teenager. Mick put his very being into the lyrics on this one. A clash classic
Joe's vocals that come in at 2.36 ish gets me every time :)
Message to all bassists: Open your ears wide and enjoy.
I remember this song just appeared one day when I was listening in Spotify. I was passing through a really bad moment of my life and this song found me. I think this song saved my life and now I come to listen it again every time I feel lost in the supermarket. I love it
Same story for me, thanks to the recommendations
Same here. 14 hour days for months on end, somehow the Clash showed up to get me through.
London Calling is a perfect album to listening to during trying times, the positive vibes in it are great. "I'm not down" saved me once. I should have taken my own advise earlier :)
Am I the only one dying for this song to be longer? That fade-out just leaves me wanting more :(
That's why you can always hit the replay button... ;-)
Just play it again. Like I do.
@@tolvajakos I will 💪💪👏🏻👏🏻😁😁
Cover it and make it so
Yeah, fade-out's usually do that to me... It's not even that I want it longer, I want it to actually finish. Meh, I absolutely love this song but fade-out's are a pet peeve of mine. That little peeve, such a cute little annoying bastard - I want to throttle and strangle the wee fuzzy little thing.
One of those songs that has an undeniably catchy tune, but when you examine the lyrics as well as the context of the songwriting, it’s actually pretty depressing. Amazing song.
@CubertSacc68 DilbertSlapp69 Yes. Or "Born in the USA" by Bruce Springsteen.

The bass in this song is ducking outstanding
This song was way, way ahead of it's time. Still very relevant in this day and age.
And for the foreseeable future.
I love it when Strummer comes in with the backing vocals.
fucking beautiful song, the clash are fucking epic, I think underrated in many ways, and Joe Strummer we need you and miss you dearly.
Over the Hedge got this song in my head years ago, and it's still stuck there.
Same
The Ben Folds remake is so much better than this version and this was the one in Over The Hedge and most of the songs in that soundtrack are by Ben Folds
@@ShawnVielee the clash's version is so much better
The lyrics (whilst dark) are beautiful, they are both so personal and at the same time universal. It takes a special intellect/ sensibility to invoke those sorts of feelings.
(Bear in mind that I wholeheartedly agree with you and this isn't intended as a takedown, it just struck me as I was reading your comment and it provided me with some much-needed joy and I felt compelled to share it.)
"To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to write The Clash..."

This song should’ve been a hit every time I listen to it it gives me the chills
😂
Came back to the movie “Over the Hedge” as a college student today and found this gorgeous song. I’ve always had an appreciation for this older music.
Oh yeah really old music, I listen to real old music sometimes though. You should hear some of it. There are great recordings over 100 years old.
I deadass prefer the Over The Hedge version. This was my fav song BEFORE I saw that but then it somehow got even better with the Vegas vibe.
literally hitler
THANK YOU FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE CAME FROM THAT MOVIE
I love Mick's vocals
I must have listened to this 600 - 1,000 times in high school. It had come out 2-3 years prior, and I felt so disconnected to my parents who were such perfectionists. I really appreciate this song.
Haha, I probably listened to this about that many times when I was in middle school, during President Obama's first term (not to comment on him per se, just to provide the temporal frame). It really is and remains an enduring song for people who feel lost in the supermarket, wherever and whenever that might be.
This song has new relevance in 2020.

Fitting song for Black Friday
In the movie Over The Hedge there was a part where they played this song and I use to get mad hype singing it! and the fact that I now finally found it my life is complete!

That version was by Ben Folds who sang Rockin The Suburbs with William Shatner.
This should be played at a Walmart
I cant have a favorite Clash song. But this one is near the top.
I was in a Aldi's yesterdayterday singing this
i hope that i can write a song that is even as half as good as this song is. what a fucking masterpiece. forever grateful for the simple fact of the clash’s existence.

Is the "supermarket" life?
Dude, I just found this song after 7-8 years of looking for it... this was my favorite childhood song and now I can’t stop listening to it!
“ I empty a bottle, I fell a bit free” Life mantra
Sure it's one of the greatest protest song but it's THAT Bass line that makes the song so good...
The best song of all of their songs ever. God came down from the heavens and wrote this song. So glad the clash covered it from over the hedge.
I want to go back to those days. I miss it so much. Had the greatest time of my life then!
I love this song so much, one of the best of the album

They live forever in music.
Paul Simonon has such an unique style... touches me everytime. Thank you, Mr. Paul.
Every time I go into Sainsbury's I sing this to myself.!!!
The scratchy guitar in this is amazing
strummer writes about mick jones, mick jones sings a sond from strummer, perfect
This song really chimes with me. When I was about 6 an ASDA opened near us; until then we shopped at our local CO-OP which was tiny. I wandered off from my parents and lost them. I started crying as I was so scared but one of the assistants found me and put a message out on the tannoy.
The guitar in the verses is some of the most beautiful music I’ve ever heard
I can feel this song within my soul. As a lower-middle class kid growing up in French-speaking Canada. I can relate so hard to this!
One of the greatest albums ever
Mick Jones is the greatest guitarist of all time. A guy who served the music and never showed off rather than innovated.
In my humble opinion Randy Rhoads holds that offer
For me it's Jimi Hendrix

Greatest of all time? To me he was always more of just a great songwriter,
Top 10 of song from The Clash.
This was the pinnacle of song writing when I was growing up and nothing can change that ever as it still is

Wise teacher. Very cool song.
This is an iconic album.
I remember my dad playing this song for me for the first time when I was like 7. I listen to it now, and actually reading the lyrics, I relate to it more than ever
Yeah, that's me since 2017. Went into one of those 24 hour warehouse hypermarkets late at night, I didn't know if I would come out alive. Guys on forklifts playing Jinga with pallets stacked with Kellogg's Corn Flakes, card playing in Produce, and other, decidedly, non-supermarkety stuff. After 2:00AM it became a hot cruising spot. Unfortunately a 'quickie' wasn't on my list, so I brought him home with me. The best deal I ever got!
