As someone who's looking to buy the Hip during the lunar new years sale, what exactly is the difference in DCS between it and the Hind? If something seems like common sense please include it anyway
The Mi-8 Hip is primarily a transport utility type helicopter. The Hind, while it has the capability to transport a smaller number of troops, it is often regarded (rightfully so) as an attack helicopter gunship. The Hip has no anti tank guided missile capability unlike the Hind which can carry up to 8 IIRC. The Hip is slightly slower than the Hind but it is faster than other helicopters like the Huey (and possibly the Gazelle IIRC). In terms of cockpit layout, the Hind and Hip are worlds apart. The Hip usually has 3 crew members sitting side by side inside a wide cockpit while the Hind has two crew members who each sit in their own segmented off bubble cockpit. The gunner sits up front and the pilot of the Hind sits in the back. When it comes to handling they both require a little more finesse than the Huey but it isn't impossible to handle well over time. I hope that helps! The Hip is an excellent helicopter and I definitely recommend it especially on sale if you are interested in it.
@ryu1940 Alright thanks, I already own the Hind from when it first released and have always been a more logistically minded helo pilot despite primarily doing fixed wing aircraft. This helped a bunch get a little bit more detail on it before I pulled the trigger, also planning on getting the P-51 this sale
@@sonniedae6398 oh cool! Have you flown on the server in this video? It’s really fun doing troop drops. Other servers there are more logistical things you can do too if you’re into it. The Hip can do sling loading or cargo transports and on some servers you’re able to move larger ground forces like Sam sites around.
@ryu1940 I don't really fly much from the era to warrant flying on it but I've been on it a few times with barely much actually done. Last I flew I was shot down by an M2000 using a Super 530, dude was chill about it
prefer the Hip and i have the Hind. the weapons load out on the Hip, i find more of a hinderance than a help. i fly with just the door gunners. troop drops can be a pain, especially if you have to find the positions yourself. i generally start by looking at how many CSAR missions there are, then decide what to do. if there are more than 5 CSAR and no recon, i feel i can more for Red picking up downed pilots. the Ark 9 radio direction finder is more than a bit wonky, and can be a headache. could you do a video on CSAR and the Ark 9? FYI i use the Overlord text bot, it gives a heads up.
I can try to incorporate that in a future video if the opportunity presents itself. Typically I shy away from a dedicated CSAR now and it ends up being based on luck if I run over them enroute.
@@ryu1940 even if you don't plan on CSAR, at troop drop while waiting, take a look for nearest CSAR, and just tuning the Ark 9 to narrow and then preset 4 from co-pilots position and flipping the ADF in the Pilots. alot of times its the needle on the ADF going wonky that alerts me, of a downed pilot nearby and of course luck. well glad to see you back at it, new sub!
If you’re successful it can be significant. Each frontline has between 10-20 encampments with 6 - 8 ground vehicles each iirc and the Hip can wipe out an entire encampment with one go. Each side has 1000 HP and the frontline makes up 50% of that score. My guess is each frontline vehicle makes up 3-5 HP and the minimum frontline movement threshold is 5% variance over the other side so it’s entirely doable for a Hip to impact that and cause the frontline to move. Granted, the score also takes in to account a few other things like industrial targets as well as aircraft attrition. The FAQ for the server details how the front moves if you wanted to know more.
The HIP is great. Might want to lighten it up a bit for speed and agility, you'll be massively overweight with all pylons full, gunners and troops. Maybe empty to 50% fuel on startup... probably still overweight but less so.
Oh yeah I agree. I typically fly under 50% fuel and only bring the machine guns. I prefer the higher speed with no pylons. It definitely is a key to surviving.
Id lower the volume of the game or increase your voice volume when youre balancing sounds creating your videos, the game volume is really overpowering and degrades from the overall beautifully cinematic and informative nature of your video

Thank you ! It’s good to be back.
Cool Video. Thanks 😊. How did you get the .trk file working?
You can open a .trk file in the mission editor. From there under a section called mission options you can change it to show external views. After that you save it and just reopen it in the replay viewer. I hope that helps.
Great video!
Thank you !
WELCOME BACK!! WOOHOO
Thank you!
What scripts are you using for these camera takes? It looks very nice, unlike standard camera handling...
Thank you ! I do not use any scripts. I manually select a view camera and modify the FOV. I also use track ir to apply my head movements as camera panning.
@@ryu1940 Aaaah, well that's interesting! Nice! I need to try that myself.
@@tomaszwota1465 I usually take a few passes at the track file because we can’t rewind. So I’ll record footage of an event from an angle and then I’ll have to go back through the track again to get another perspective and record that then blend the two in the video editing software to make it look seamless.
@@ryu1940 yes, that much I've learned myself as well. Fairly annoying limitation due to the way replays are simulated.
Subbed to the channel. Maybe I should hop in a heli and join in on Enigma fun at some point. ;)
@@tomaszwota1465 awesome! Yeah it’s definitely a blast doing helicopter work on that server! Give it a shot !
Last I flew I was shot down by an M2000 using a Super 530, dude was chill about it
@@sonniedae6398 ah that must have been a different server as this one doesn't have the M2000.
prefer the Hip and i have the Hind.
the weapons load out on the Hip, i find more of a hinderance than a help. i fly with just the door gunners. troop drops can be a pain, especially if you have to find the positions yourself. i generally start by looking at how many CSAR missions there are, then decide what to do. if there are more than 5 CSAR and no recon, i feel i can more for Red picking up downed pilots. the Ark 9 radio direction finder is more than a bit wonky, and can be a headache.
could you do a video on CSAR and the Ark 9?
@@jamesmontgomery9464 thank you! Good idea I’ll give it a try while I’m sitting around or enroute somewhere!
Welcome back ❤
Thank you !!
wow nice video:)
Thank you so much !
How much of an impact does 1 Hip dropping troops for a few hours have on the server?
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
The HIP is great.
Might want to lighten it up a bit for speed and agility, you'll be massively overweight with all pylons full, gunners and troops.
Maybe empty to 50% fuel on startup... probably still overweight but less so.
Oh yeah I agree. I typically fly under 50% fuel and only bring the machine guns. I prefer the higher speed with no pylons. It definitely is a key to surviving.
Hip please
Id lower the volume of the game or increase your voice volume when youre balancing sounds creating your videos, the game volume is really overpowering and degrades from the overall beautifully cinematic and informative nature of your video
Yeah it is something I struggled with trying to balance the levels in this video.
I sortof disagree, hearing the sound of helis/jets burning by is real nice.
rounds detonating in the air or rockets being fired all add to the "all out war" feel, something I think is missing from alot of videos 'cept this one.
eh then again I can listen to helicopters all day.
you've got me back on ECW flying the MI-8 now
so I say good shit man, cheers!
@@coffeemaker9014 thank you! I’m glad you’re jumping in the Mi-8 again. Yeah I agree with you. I know I need to balance my voice over better but I do make conscious decisions to amplify the war sounds in some areas for the reasons you’ve said. The server is chaotic and when you stop to listen to all the brrrrrttt, sonic booms, and screaming turbines you really get a sense of it. I’m glad to hear that feeling I was looking for has resonated with someone. So thanks for sharing that!
