Apologies for the essay! As you can see, especially with the Thunder, the issue is also that the Spurs lack the level of elite shooting, and confidence to punish defense. They are trapping and doubling Wemby even off ball sometimes because the Spurs shooters are not good enough on open attempts. When Wemby does drive on a defender like Caruso at 4:15 , you have both Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace there to swipe at the ball and cause turnovers. at 1:13 you can see Houston has 4 people in the paint, with Wemby's defender being the only one outside of the paint. But the Spurs have 2 people cross court, 1 in the paint, cross court, and the other at the top of the three point line, with Fred VanVleet in the passing lane. at 2:19 you can see that the spacing of the Spurs allows Cam Whitmore a swipe at the ball, causing Wemby to need to dodge that, but then he dodges into Tari Eason and Dillon Brooks. That is 3 defenders causing the turnover. At 2:43 you can see Castle causes an overcommit to double Wemby off ball, and then swing it to Keldon. To a good and confident shooter like a KCP, or even like Isaiah Joe that is an open 3 pointer, but instead Keldon just dumps it to Wemby allowing a big to switch on to him and him passing out to Keldon who is still fairly open as Whitmore focuses on Wemby but Keldon is not looking for the ball or a shot. I do think that the shooter/scorer they are lacking is Devin Vassell who is injured. He is their most confident shooter, and shot creator, averaging ~20 points and ~7 3pt attempts per game. I think you may see a lot more opportunities for Victor when they don't have to force it to him to try to shot-create when Devin is back, but they also need better shooters, better spacing and more movement (which you do point out with your comparison to Chet at 5:40 )
To add to this, they have literal hands on him from when he gets past the three point line, he has to fight just to get into position which is leaving him exhausted. That's why even shorter players are effective in guarding him as they stay close enough for the first dribble he has to take to be away from the basket which led to a few of his turnovers this game
Wemby has not gotten of to the start i hope he would, he will still be fine at the end of the day since he is still very young but he has huge holes in his game teams are taking advantage of hes got to clean that up asap. People calling chet better than him now i cant let that slide
@@mrcrackdonald_1U can't just measure Chet's impact when Wemby guard him. So far this season Chet is making better impact to his team compare to Wemby.
Just from watching the highlights of his game against OKC last night, I was wondering WTF a 7'4 dude is doing standing around at the 3 point line all game. There's plenty of players that can do that, but there's not very many agile giants out there, go take advantage of your length and agility in the post and stop shooting threes, you're not even good at it
Teams know this and crowd the paint any time he walks towards it. Only elite post players can deal with that kind of defensive attention, and Wemby isn’t in that group at 20 years old
@siphillis They crowd the paint because they fear his presence, this could make for a lot of open shot opportunities for his teammates, and therefore, the paint would be unclogged again. All he has to do is stay in the paint, and he will become a better post player
@@siphillis it’s not the same bc elite post players get guarded by the big. He’s being guarded by a guard or a wing. He’s just not a good post player or doesn’t have post skills
I don't think you saw what happened last year LMAO .... people made a gigantic deal after summer league , and then the biggingin of the season, Dude, your making this video after game 4 ? Lol and his avg 17/11/3
The problem is if he bulks up, chances are that's gonna mess up his ankles and knees because of how tall he is, that's his physiologic conundrum. He also settles too much on jumpers but can't make it on a high clip, and also can't finish at the rim efficiently, Wemby is still young and has a lot of time to figure these things
Wemby had a bad game last year in November and scored only 8 points. Like that game, you will forget this game once he starts wearing his first of 7-10 rings in 2027
Jumpshots usually don't stabilize until year 3 & 4. Especially with someone as young and will gain as much strength as Wemby will over the next 2 years.
If Wemby wants to be a great center he needs to put on mass like everyone wants him to, and that is what he focused on his first year in the league. Reports are that he came in up 25lb from last year having him around ~235-240 which is still not as big as you'd like your true center to be to bang against the top of the league. Being heavier will give him more guard matchups he can win in the post (most of them are around 200-225 but have leverage on him due to his height) and will give him better rebounding. Realistically he needs to be one of the heaviest centers in the league when he's done bulking because everyone has leverage on him. Alternatively if you want to be a great stretch forward you need to do the opposite and minimize physical changes to muscles in your shooting chain. Wemby is gaining massive amounts of muscle which is changing the structure of the muscles and tendons he uses to shoot. To excel as a PF he needs to slow down his workout routine, stop ball handling, get to spots around the perimeter that he's shooting 40%+ in and wait for a pass, parts of his game that he doesn't enjoy. He likes creating the space for his shot via his own ball handling and often demands passes in transition or at the top of the key which is just not apart of either role he should be playing for the team. Wemby is trying to be some weird hybrid of center/forward/guard that just will not work at this level. He's not a good enough guard to play guard in the NBA, his shooting numbers aren't good enough to prefer him over another 3-pt shooter, however his center skills are elite and would be top of the league. It's obvious what he should focus on - but, the changes required to his gameplay seem like they're stopping him. He should be a prolific center with a 75% field goal percentage, 20 rebounds a game, 5 blocks a game, 6 to 7 assists, and only one or two three point shots when entirely wide open in tempo. Instead he often gets the most jumpshots on his team while shooting some of the lowest efficiency, will have nights without even 10 rebounds, often has sub 50% field goal percent... Pop might be ruining Wemby
Getting bigger isn't necessarily an answer for him. Part of what makes him special is his agility and speed. Here is the problem with bulking up for him. Strength scales linearly. Weight scales quadratically. For simplicity sake, muscle that is 2 inches thick is 4x stronger than muscle that is 1 inch thick, but it weighs 8x as much. He's already a big guy. Adding muscle isn't necessarily the answer because it could have severe draw backs to his mobility rapidly. Pretty much every super tall dude in the NBA has always had problems with joints and injuries. It usually starts by the time they are 23-24. Loading Wemby up with another 40 pounds of muscle, could be detrimental both to his long term health, AND his mobility, because his power to weight ratio will decline.
I think it’s a bit of a jump to say not being put at the 5 = no post skills. Victor doesn’t have enough mass yet to bang bang type post scorer. Think early Giannis. It’s not worth it to force him there and risk him getting injured. I get that he’s not technically taking “full” advantage but it’s year 2.

Its easy. Right now he plays exactly like KD. But even if he can shoot, he isnt close to KD if it comes to jumpshooting. He needs to learn how to play as a big. Means nearly all his 3's should be C&S and basically no pullups. He should roll to the rim in P&R situations. He needs to establish deep position in the paint to get entry passes. He has to facilitate out of the high post (dribble handoffs, passes to the corner, passes to cutters). Right now he does WAY to much with the ball in his hand trying to create his own shot out of face up situations on the perimeter. And thats just not a strengh of him. At least not as of now.
@@Smido83 It does mean it’s not a shot he should stop taking as you suggest. Some guys are just more comfortable shooting off the dribble and he seems to be one of them.
@@Vern38 My man, that doesnt mean he should shoot more Pullups. It means he should train C&S, or stop taking that many 3's at all. Cause this season he isnt hitting anything. Hence why I said, he should play more like a big, not like a wing. And just as a comparison: In 2021/22 Luka shot only 32% on C&S 3's. Last season 37.8%. Means he worked at his weakness and is now a bigger thread off ball because of it.
This isn’t really a work ethic issue more than he’s just inexperienced with dealing with situations like this. He probably didn’t train for stuff like this specifically, but give it time and he’ll likely figure out ways to deal with it, like Giannis did with the 2019 Raptors wall.
The Spurs have been lackluster from 3 in these first four games, and it is inviting way less spacing, and also more double & triple teams on Victor. When Vassell is back on the floor with Barnes and CP3, the spacing will dramatically improve. There a lot of temporary factors affecting Victors offense at the moment; exhaustion from a deep olympics run, being sick the past couple of games, no Vassell, barnes and cp3 still finding their chemistry with the team, and teammates struggling from 3. This is a recipe for poor offensive efficiency from Victor. These are all things that will be amended after, hopefully, a very short time. I think this is just a small bump in the road and isn't anything to be too worried about for Spurs fans.
This is similar to how the Mavs figured out they could risk putting guys Jason Terry or JJ Barea on LeBron in 2011. He hadn’t developed his game in the post and having quick guys that can stay in front of him on the perimeter while keeping a big down low made his life insanely difficult. This isn’t new, and its why the post game needs to be re-emphasized a lot more in developing young big men
He's still pretty young BUT it is concerning that he doesn't seem to have the natural ability to score like say Luka or Shai. He can still put in lots of work to get better offensively but I do think that he was overhyped regarding his offense. I really hope he won't become another Gobert or Kristaps....
This ain't really nothing to "figure out". He has a team full of pro level coaches, including Gregg Poppvich. If you're 7'4" 220 lbs, here is your shot diet: 1) Post Face Up 2) Screen and Roll 3) Post Short Hook 16 PPG guaranteed.
Wemby had a bad game last year in November and scored only 8 points. Like that game, everyone will forget this game once he starts wearing his first of 7-10 rings in 2027
The Spurs need to get rid of Zach Collins and get a Big that can shoot and spread the floor. They could easily pick up a player from next year’s draft that will help with this.
It’s almost like being 7’4” tall is pointless if you’re just gonna play like a 6’6” guard. Dude thinks he needs to dribble in a face up and it’s hilarious.

We've been told from the start that this season will be a test season as well, just like the last one. Why do people expect MVP plays from Wemby when that is not what Spurs are trying to do at the moment? As i said: we have been told by both wemby and pops that this season will not be a competitive season just like the last one! He is 20 years old. LET HIM F**IN' LEARN THE GAME!!! And also, why are people talking crap about games in the first month of the season? Teams were obviously going to adjust to him, and it’s on both Wemby and the Spurs to figure out a counter. Only truly, truly great scorers can deal with this amount of game planning and Wemby at 20 just isn’t on that level. Not even close

And just as a comparison: In 2021/22 Luka shot only 32% on C&S 3's. Last season 37.8%. Means he worked at his weakness and is now a bigger thread off ball because of it.
Same guy that questioned superstars work ethic btw.
This isn’t really a work ethic issue more than he’s just inexperienced with dealing with situations like this. He probably didn’t train for stuff like this specifically, but give it time and he’ll likely figure out ways to deal with it, like Giannis did with the 2019 Raptors wall.
Not sure how exactly this is relevant 🤷🏽♂️
@@endangeredluck334 then he should shut the tf up, talking bad about other players, simple as that.
Facts work on that post game before you talk but he young and gonna get better but it'll take time people gotta slow down that top 10 player talk
He won't he'll be better if healthy I do agree that as a pure scorer I haven't seen that from him yet not sure if I will let's see
This ain't really nothing to "figure out". He has a team full of pro level coaches, including Gregg Poppvich. If you're 7'4" 220 lbs, here is your shot diet:
1) Post Face Up
2) Screen and Roll
3) Post Short Hook
16 PPG guaranteed.
Wemby had a bad game last year in November and scored only 8 points. Like that game, everyone will forget this game once he starts wearing his first of 7-10 rings in 2027
Send him to Denver as a backup big. Jokic will show him the ropes.
Wemby needs a Kareem skyhook, a wilt fadeaway or some work with Hakeem
The Spurs need to get rid of Zach Collins and get a Big that can shoot and spread the floor. They could easily pick up a player from next year’s draft that will help with this.
It’s almost like being 7’4” tall is pointless if you’re just gonna play like a 6’6” guard. Dude thinks he needs to dribble in a face up and it’s hilarious.
Wemby had a bad game last year in November and scored only 8 points. Like that game, you will forget this game once he starts wearing his first of 7-10 rings in 2027
@@carlocalingasan998 last year in november he was 19yo rookie not comparable
We've been told from the start that this season will be a test season as well, just like the last one.
Why do people expect MVP plays from Wemby when that is not what Spurs are trying to do at the moment?
As i said: we have been told by both wemby and pops that this season will not be a competitive season just like the last one!
He is 20 years old. LET HIM F**IN' LEARN THE GAME!!!
And also, why are people talking crap about games in the first month of the season? Same bs at every season beginning: warriors will be elite, 3 or 4 guys are not playing at MVP level and, of course, those "the NBA has a [insert name here] problem" videos.
it his dribbing, i mean, all big guys dribbles so high that can easily be swatter by a smaller defensive guy. and as you can see all his moves starts from the bottom
I’m not saying Chet is going to be better then him at the end but he sure as hell is right now
Teams were obviously going to adjust to him, and it’s on both Wemby and the Spurs to figure out a counter. Only truly, truly great scorers can deal with this amount of game planning and Wemby at 20 just isn’t on that level. Not even close
Relax clown it’s been 3 games
It's the reality of what's actually happening. He didn't say this is how he'll be forever
@@accordgolfer He should say this after 20 games.
Spurs need another couple of high end guys. The 2A and 2B.
I dont think itsa concern at all, second year player still developing, the spurs would like to and will see development but theyre looking for a good pick so i dont think itsahige deal at all
They need to slow down on the Wemby hype and start giving Bancherro the love he deserves.
Bancherro got no aura he never gonna have hype as wemby
He playing like Bol Bol rn
Is that you Shaq?
It's too early.
If bro was who they say he is then they would win. The glaze needs to stop
Wemby had a bad game last year in November and scored only 8 points. Like that game, you will forget this game once he starts wearing his first of 7-10 rings in 2027
Should’ve took Embiids advice seriously
What was Embiid's advice?
Noone sghould ever take any advice from Embiid if it comes to basketball. At least not if you want to win.
I don't think you saw what happened last year LMAO .... people made a gigantic deal after summer league , and then the biggingin of the season, Dude, your making this video after game 4 ? Lol and his avg 17/11/3 hold up at least a month
From what I saw early on he seems like he didn't improve..he's playing good last year bcuz of he rookie of the year award..right now naah mAn.
Back in the hay days, Charles Barkley was guard tall lanky centers because of that big butt of his. Wait till Zion defend Victor; Zion will expose Victor.
Took you a whole year to notice he has 0 strength? Dude couldn’t lift the bar even 1 time during his combine.
Rockets fan are you?
I have 100% confidence in Wemby to figure it out
Wemby dies have a big problem, he gets triple teamed nearly every posession he gets the ball inside the three point line and his team mates can't knock down open shots. He gets frustrated and starts making stupid shots.
Dawg it’s literally just wemby, Sochan and keldon who can’t shoot 3s. All 3 of em are shooting 20% or lower
He needs that Giannis, get in the gym, transformation instead of his yoga sessions.
by getting in the gym you mean TRT right ?
Still gotta go in the gym with trt tho or nothing happens
He took 5 shots
long story short..... he's soft... lol.. He needs to bulk more like Giannis...
Nah he’s too big to bulk up. Pretty sure he’ll just get injuries with bulking up. He needs some damn post moves and get more physical. Chet has the same frame as him and it’s even smaller than him but Chet is super physical
Shawn Bradley anyone ?
I feel like this video is making excuses for wembys lack of real effort to mix it up offensively..people praised how big he was n exaggerated how well he could shoot when the truth is he’s a defender who can occasionally shoot..he seems weak and unlike Chet he seems more of a catch n shoot type,,his handles r trash.,at least Chet has a post up game n dribble to get to the rim.,wemby takes bad shots n can’t seem to use his height to his advantage..he plays smaller then he really is…
CH is more skilled
Wemby is overrated his game dont translate to win.
Youre probably Julius Randal fan.
P5 is way better!!
is he going to be another Manute Bol ?
He’s really been poor scoring wise all year, but he really wasn’t that last year. He’s 7’4 w ball skills, but he’s not the #1 type guy. I think he’ll always be the spurs best player, but I feel they need someone else who is an elite scorer to win. Wemby scoring wise should be #2 or 3
“All year” as in four games
@ yeah the 4 games since that’s the all year, but I’ve always felt he was too hyped. Could be bias as I’ve preferred bmiller and didn’t think he was a better prospect than paolo, but still

There is a fine line between "having the mentality" to accept leading offensive role and getting accostumed and developing bad habits.

Wemby sucks
The glaze was insane spurs look like a bottom team in the west and they really want to give him dpoy or mip give me a brwak
Overrated, time showed how better Chet Holm is
Wemby is overrated. Wemby is too weak to post up smaller guards & wings.
His handles are weak. He plays soft & finesse and shoots too many jumpers. Cooper Flagg & AJ Dybantsa are better than Wemby and Wemby will be forgotten about when those 2 players come to the NBA
If Cooper has a worse rookie season than Wemby did, then he’s an absolute failure. Your logic, not mine
@ There’s such thing as rookie peak season. There’s a lot of NBA players that fall off after their rookie season.
Not saying Wemby is a bad player but he’s not the greatest thing since sliced bread like the media & fans presents him as
@ For people to not find it alarming that Wemby can’t post up 6’4 Alex Caruso is crazy, Wemby like 7’5, it makes no sense.
Wemby gets hyped up cause he’s a 7’5 guy with skill but when people get over the novelty of a super tall guy with skill then Wemby just another guy
