Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" GRANT THOMSON HELLO when does this post on your channel ... even though i subscribed i still want to know great random vid
+JerryRigEverything He needs $170 worth of electricity to fill up a 35 litre container. That's $4.86 for 1 litre. Online average electricity prices in Canada are 10c/kWh. $170 equals 1700kWh. He needs 48.6kWh for 1 litre. Assuming it takes the machine around 17.5 days (2-3 weeks) to fill up the container, it makes 2 litres per day, using 97.2kWh, which costs him $9.72. To put into perspective, a fridge would use somewhere around 0.2kW per hour (depends on a size), 4,8kWh per day, 1752kWh per year. This guy uses that in 17.5 days. He uses some serious amount of power. P.S It took me 30 minutes to do research and calculations, so I'd be very thankful if you replied and give me some credit for blowing your mind. Cheers!
It's basically a huge refrigerator/air conditioner. It just runs at a higher power rate. Thermodynamics suggests that a f***load of energy (electricity in this case) is used to achieve such rate. I have to say I found the project quite lovely, thanks Jerry for sharing this piece of art with all of us, it's really cool. Literally really, really cool.
Just Wow!I love the variety and the way you network on your channel Zack. So Cool how you share your channel name with others while incorporating a small plug like at the 6:17 mark. Can't wait to run into you and buy you a beer sometime.
Grant, that is in fact much more interesting and impressive than anything I've seen you do with the liquid nitrogen itself. I don't know if that is just me, but I'd definitely appreciate more 'behind the scenes' video's like this.
may I ask a question, why have the radiator blowing the heat into the atmosphere when it could be heat pumped into his hot water heater? My god we have de-humidifier heat pumps built on top of hot water heaters that save energy and work very effectively. I'm sure a "Jerry Rig" could be done to convert the radiator into hot water heater.
Wow, I'm seriously impressed. That's some major machinery Grant has in his basement (even him having a basement is a BIG plus, it's almost unheard of nowadays in America). That thing must've cost at least a couple grand to build (the N2 separator alone must've cost a grand or two).
TIL using adsorption and simply filtering air is cheaper than fractional distillation if I just want nitrogen gas. Cheapest small flow nitrogen generator I could find was $3000. Thanks for showing the setup, you've helped me a lot.
NO WAY! I was a subscriber to his channel for quite a long time (mostly when he did a lot of liquid nitrogen experiments) and never thought that he actually could have a kind of a laboratory like that on his own basement. That was so cool! I guess it might be time to go and check what he might be doing on his channel by now...
i heard dewar flask in my schooling where activated carbon and some other adsorbent needed to adsorb different gases...unit operation in removing oxygen from air is adsorption technically..
Who else started this video thinking I'm TOTALLY going to be making my own Liquid Nitrogen and at about the 2:41 mark of the video you were thinking.... NO.... NO I'M NOT! My dreams were crushed when I saw the Helium machine even by 2:41 I knew this was not your average hobby project. To much work!
I have solar panels on my house. I REALLY want to do this! It wouldn't cost me a thing to keep it running continuously What if you don't use the nitrogen generator? Besides getting nitrogen AND oxygen and maybe argon... also wouldn't the cold head accumulate too much solid CO2 and water and stop producing liquid gas? I don't mind condensing other cryogenic liquids but I worry about the ice buildup. Do I absolutely need the dry nitrogen?
I wouldn’t say you have an endless supply. Even though Helium is in a closed loop. The molecules of helium is so small that it can seep through walls. I could be wrong here but I reckon that over some time your helium will disappear. I also have a question. I want to make a nitrogen coolant aircon type contraption. What type of compressor would be needed.

Weirdbug 2471 I clearly did it out of respect.. your doing it out of attention
Stop arguing, there’s not point, a lot of us watched him as kids including me and we are all heart broken
I wonder how much electricity he needs for every litre of liquid nitrogen.
Good question! I have no idea.

guess now all that's needed is a solar energy generator set... and that's it unlimited liquid nitrogen with no cost... well technically =D
why not use geothermal power? or wind energy? or teslas free energy setup?
