Thanks Rob! I had the same issue and decided to try to use a Q-Tip and some rubbing alcohol with the laptop powered off. I got the Q-Tip slightly wet, stretched it out, and swirled it into the headphone jack. It came out pretty dirty, but fixed the issue! Looks like I won't have to de-solider it. yet.

Thank you very much for your comment, I spent many hours researching a solution for this problem and after I almost giving up I decided to follow your advice. I wrapped some tissue on a cocktail stick or toothpick, I didn’t have alcohol so I used gin to soak the stick and clean the jack plug of my computer and on my sound output menu appeared “internal speakers” and resolved my problem. So thank you again!

Thanks Rob, was very detailed and informative. At least I know what seems to be the problem with my laptop. But my logic board is different, so wont take a risk

I have the same red light/no "internal speakers" available problem. blowing into the jack port would fix it sometimes and only for a short time. I can also connect to bluetooth speakers remotely. But I'm hoping this will do the trick, I'll just have to share this with my tech and see if they can do it on the cheap (rather than replace the board which was their guess without opening it up)

What about when even if you plug in some earphones there’s still no sound? That’s my problem. Is it my logic board?

found the solution. the problem is with your headphone jack. whether there is a switch in there that's stuck or if it's just dirty I don't know, but I wrapped a wet wipe very tightly around my headphone plug then jammed it into the headphone jack and when I pulled it out the option for internal headphone showed up

Ok, haven't gone through the video yet (automatic subtitles are a bit faulty) but first things first -- anyone making an audio based video on how to fix an audio problem on a computer deserves a special place in hell. Deep in the countryside here, with no headphones or anything to help get me by with that...

Seconding this method - while I'm glad some folks have had luck with q-tips or toothpicks, that's often a very temporary fix and over time will become less and less effective the more you have to do it. Rob has the most permanent and most effective fix for this problem.
For folks looking for more info, other models, or simply a text explanation in case your headphone jack prevents you from hearing this video, this thread on MacRumors should be helpful in understanding what's going on. forums.macrumors.com/threads/macbook-pro-optical-out-wont-turn-off.239287/page-4
