I finished your Hot Routez podcast earlier along with this one, good stuff! Especially enjoying your takes on the Lions because there aren’t many creators out there who choose to speak thoroughly on them. Got a few things to say about where you think this team stands at this point. The Lions are not a team I would call a Super Bowl contender, but if anything they are ahead of schedule on the rebuild that they started two years ago. I feel like the problem is that some Detroit fans aren’t used to this team being good and drove the hype train a bit too far, which is something I can say I was kinda guilty of too early on in the season. However, I don’t think the Lions approached that 2023 Draft with the same mindset you’re inferring. This team wasn’t trying to go for it all this year by adding immediate impact players, or else they would’ve made bigger moves in FA and adjusted contracts for the space to get them, and probably also made more trades at the deadline. You spoke here about the team’s mentality and culture being probably its biggest asset, and I think that’s really a product of what Holmes and Campbell prioritized with the players they brought in, including those they drafted in 2023. I think this regime values character almost to a fault, but with the culture they’ve built they’ve created a prime landing spot for free agents or trade targets with a coach that anyone would love playing for. I wouldn’t sleep on the Lions possibly making some big acquisitions at key defensive positions this offseason, especially with the cap space they have.

I was surprised by your response to Geno's performance. I mostly rely on you, the PFF NFL Podcast and the QB School for my NFL takes. The other two whole-heartedly said that this was Geno's best game in his career and he was let down by a bad defense. Dallas has a top 5 defense by pretty much every metric. And Geno (with the help of pretty much only JSN and DK) dropped 35 on them. Why are you disappointed with how he played?
I wouldn't say I'm disappointed so sorry if that is what came through. But he disappeared in the 4th quarter and I continue to just feel like he never gives you any form of sustained great play at the position. But he absolutely played a great game and deserved to win.
I am not as high on Bryce Young as Marcus, but I do agree situation matters and Young is playing in a tough situation. He has watched a lot more Panthers game then me, in fact I haven't watch a single one start to finish, I have the league ticket so I see 5 minutes here, 5 minutes there, but it probably adds to less than a full game total, but I do have access to PFF and I am less convinced Young has been good than him because they don't give Bryce Young a good PFF grade, but I can see from teh PFF grades its a bad situation. PFF gives the Panthers a 49.2 pass blocking grade which grades as 30th out of 32. They give teh Panthers 64.9 receiving grade which also ranks 30 out of 32. Its pretty clear the pass game there is a difficult situation to succeed in. I think Byrce still could develop into a franchise QB, though I have downgraded the odds in my mind that he will do that. But context does need to be factored in. Maybe an area I don't agree with Marcus on is I don't think he is consistent. The PFF grading says for example Kenny Pickett had a really tough situation too. Carolina graded out 30 out of 32 on pass blocking, the Steelers graded out as 31 out of 32 on pass blocking and have a 66.3 receiving grade which put them a couple spots ahead of the Panthers there, but still ike 27th out of 32. Yet I don't think Marcus has ever said, we should be too harsh on Kenny Pickett, its a bad situation.
Two notes according to the Underdog guys, Kyle Pitts is not healthy, has gone full NASCAR and cannot turn right. I feel like if it comes down to Brock or dak voters would just hold the 9ers game against him along with them not beating the other 2 serious contenders in the NFC
The Dallas offense has improved greatly: that of the Chargers has found a way to get worse. Looks like no one's willing to admit that they were wrong & that Kellen Moore _was_ The Problem there. Dak ain't the best QB, but he has the best stats. That *change* is due to play-calling. As for the comments about Bryce young, agreed. I also saw a video done by someone comparing him, what *he does* compared to Stroud. Exactly as you say. When the opportunity is there, like Stroud, Young is ready. & they move & think alike. The Problems Are on-field talent & play-calling. He's faced with the choices of doing nothing or doing something bad WAY too much. I can't figure Baker Mayfield out. He seems to have completely changed his personality. He used to act like an obnoxious frat-boy head-butting teammates who did not want to do so. Now he's timid & plays like he's terrified of getting hit & he _really_ did so more after that game against the Eagles. With Evans & Co. he finally has a chance to show what he's made of & he's shying away from the opportunity. Minshew is the definition of being lucky over being good. Or _is_ he? He's the opposite of Wentz who looks great in practice, then inexplicably becomes Zach Wilson in games. Minshew looks like a clunky out of shape former athlete who didn't keep in shape in practice, yet it's like his passes land perfectly in games even though he doesn't have the strongest or most accurate arm. He's like a less erratic Taylor Heinicke. Oh, & as for Browning's performance: I called that upset. I could see he had all the ability, just needed reps, confidence & player support. He got all of it. The Jags on the other hand seem to have played All Season as if they expect to win & can cruise through the regular season. Pederson isn't calling plays & they've had terrible games & they don't seem to care. Between that & their _terrible drafting_ for the past 2 years, they're not gonna stay on top of the division for long.
Tfg I get you don’t want to give up on bryce. I was stoked when we got him, but it is worse than you are letting on. I’ve seen my share of bad qb play over the last 5 years. The ghost of Cam Newton, Kyle Allen, Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Darnold, Pj Walker, and Baker. Bryce has outplayed Pj and Baker. Thats it. He isn’t even playing up to a starting caliber qb. You can blame the surrounding core, but the offense was unrecognizable with Dalton in there. I hope things get better, because we are stuck with Bryce for at least another full season. It feels like to me each week he steps on the field lowers our chances of any reputable coach coming to Carolina no matter how much money Tepper throws at them.
Steelers lost Cole Holcomb and Kwon Alexander, and Elandon Roberts left in this game too. Their LB core has been wrecked. And Mink got back for the first time against the Cardinals and broke his hand. And Keanu Neal is on IR. They have no middle of the field.
For two weeks in a row it looks like the Texans have completely changed their plays on offense & it looks like they're having trouble adjusting. They got lucky in that Denver's luck regarding TOs ran out in that game & without them, Russ lacks the ability to carry this team for 4 quarters. The Texans are much improved, but are they really good? No. There just are So Many under-achieving teams in the league. Falcons, Bucs, Saints, Giants, Pats, Jets, Browns, Bills, Packers until 3 weeks ago, & even the Lions Jags, Dolphins, Chiefs, Bengals & Eagles. No one knows who to hope for since everyone had Low Hopes for the 49ers early & can't seem to shift into wanting to see them succeed. Can't the NFL simply realign starting now & declare Dallas the winners of the NFCS?
