I plan to build my second pond soon. It will be a LARGE pond for swimming. Your large pond had a pH of 7.24 ...
The ideal pH for a swimming pool is 7.00 - 7.6 ..... Your's is PERFECT. I am even lazier than you. I'll never even test it.... if it's clear, it's fine.

Great update Kev. Handy gadget. There's a lot to think about here, but absolute proof that all ponds are different and unique. You have definitely mastered the ability to understand them all You've tweaked each one, so they're all beautiful ecosystems able to sustain life and thrive. I have enjoyed the years, watching you experiment with each one. It has been an incredible journey.

Amazing episode. YES KEV! I want to see you clear that green pond up. But I do believe that plants are enough to do just that. The question is the quantity. More roots means more water uptake, and more surface area for niyrifying bacteria to colonize. - I have this personall experiment running, and am still waiting for results one month in. My bucket is super new. But yes! Would love to see you clear up that green pond! ❤

Depends. All the big ponds never. Little container ponds every day in warmer weather.

I have two tanks and in one of them there is a lot of bogwood that I collected in the forest around and the PH in this one is very low (around 6PH), the other have wood I bought and the PH is as high as my tap water I put in it (which is around 7.5PH) ! I definetly think that a huge load of bogwood, especially if collected localy drops the PH down !
It’s amazing how the different elements affect the chemistry.
The high pH in algae dominated pond is due to the algae. Algae will cause big variations in pH as sunlight causes photosynthesis. As algae undergoes photosynthesis, oxygen is released into the water causing the pH to go up.

Driftwood (and anything that releases tannin) will lower the ph in the water column, anaerobic bacteria releases lactic acid and can also lower the ph. I think a lot of stuff in a body of water (big or small) tends to acidify. It's weird your small container has such high ph! I wonder if the container is concrete, or if the rock in it is limestone? That tester is really cool, though. I think I would end up obsessing over things I can't change. lol
It’s quite fascinating. I’ve been playing around with it since making the video. Just this week I tried the sodium percarbonate on the courtyard pond (I’ve got footage and will do a vid) but it was very interesting watching the values of the pond change. But you are right there’s no point stressing over things that can’t be changed.

Our ph is 8.9 so i use tank water only. Lots of local rocks keep it in parameters

Great review of product. I think it would be useful tool for many people.
I think for that footage I was using the go pro. Most of the time I dunk my iPhone underwater.
re: aerobic bacteria producing acids (lower pH)
Bacteria that break down carbohydrates are mostly aerobic, and do produce organic acids as byproducts.
Animal waste does not tend to have a high carbohydrate content, so these bacteria would not be involved in this process. However, breaking down leaf matter and other dead plants almost certainly WOULD contain carbs, and then these bacteria- and the acids they produce- may come into play.
Green water is great for keeping daphnia.
I would love to see you do a bog filter on the bowl.

Love your work Kev. This might be a noob question, but I’m wondering what happens to the nitrifying bacteria when tests show zero ammonia and zero nitrites? How do they survive without a ‘food source’? I’m using the API Master Pond Test Kit, and running a bog based on your barrel bog design (👍). Water quality is great, clear apart from tannins, fishies and frogs are happy, but are the bacteria happy?
When the ecosystem is in full swing I find I don’t get any readings also. My theory is everything is being consumed/processed pretty much as quick as it produced, therefore zero reading. Imagine if it read 5ppm, then in a month it was 10ppm, we don’t want the readings going up then we need to do a water change or maintenance.
How does ahigh temperature affect the pond, sometimes mine can be as high as 28c?

6 in-ground ones. I have no idea if I added up all the troughs, containers, wine barrels, tubs etc.

Birds keep eating them. Natives are harder to catch.
I have koi and goldfish in my dad's pond. The pond is 1.5m deep and even then the fish is always hiding underneath the bridge.

Interesting to see data on pond water, I expect if it was put into a spreadsheet and collected over time (cycles\seasons\years) many patterns will show up. Using historic data, you can notice when something is not normal or how a change has affected it.
For cars, you can get test kits for oil for some basic information at home, but sending a sample off to specialists (£40ish for a motor oil sample analysis here in the uk) will give a lot more detailed information. There maybe places that deal with water samples, offering the same sort of service.
As someone who has had a 'green water disaster' in a sentimental pond - your bog-filter videos got me crystal clear water in 4-6 weeks (25L test filter on a 1000L pond) upgrading to a 80L filter will help my energy efficiency (not lazy, honest - just economical with my energy expenditure haha). My pond was horrendously pea green compared to your 'green pond' - you can still see a bit of the rock under the surface in yours haha.
Bird poop is nasty to practically everything, I think it is 'acidic' and that is the lower numbers on the PH scale? I can't remember which way it goes to be fair. When I used hydroponics, I only tested for PPM, PH and temperature to maintain the solutions - I just kept those 3 things within a range - I have zero experience with any other water data stuff.
Superb video as always Kev, well delivered and made me think about the pond in a different way. I wonder if there are places that can give analysis on insect/bacteria/algae samples. It could certainly help remove the guess work from identifying species etc living in and around the ponds habitat.
I’d love to send the water off for a in-depth analysis but it’s quite expensive, I really should do it though because I think it would be fascinating. Thanks for your support and insights 😊👍
