I have 3 of his spindles and ALL of them spin forever......and ever.....and ever.... Fun fact, I swore off learning to spin until my cousin dragged me to Sheep and Wool. 5 mins in his booth, he gave me a quick lesson and I bought a spindle and then roving and now fast forward 20 some years, I teach and have enough wool to insulate a 3000sqft house. LOL.

So much interesting and beatiful stuff! I realy do love the green wool you got, it compliments you very well ... and those Locks!!! the orange-black ones, absolutely stunning. Also never heard of a Pendulum Wheel before, very fascinating. Looks like it needs a lot of practice to get the right rythm. Even those young sheep are so fortuate to have ther first ever sheering done by such a skilled sheerer. Its so important to not ruin the experience from the get go. ❤ I helped at a sheering this year for the first time. It was a great and important experience (especially as beeing a spinner myself), but unfortunately both for the sheep and the sheerer a very rough day, working under a scorching summersun all day and everything. Regarding the silk lap : I bought 2 tussa laps (so the moth had escaped before it was made) and they are THE most beautiful gold colour. I tried a little on it's own, but my hands got cramped very quickly. (I have an old injury that plays up) So I blended it 50/50 with alpaca... here is where I wipe the drool off the keyboard... oh my... it was amazing! Going to get more silk.... dammitall.... 😉

In 2020, "The Misery" literally hit 3 months before Oregon Flock & Fiber Festival was scheduled. This fall, we're s'possed to finally have another OFFF....But I am now on the other side of the state. There is no justice.
8' of work in 15 seconds or so is an *incredible* speed, wow. I'm a woodworker interested in making spindles and if anything could get me to learn how to cartwright it would be this. Even with a slightly scaled down arm this would be a pretty serious machine. I'm gonna replay that section probably a hundred times to figure out how to make it.

Evie! After drop spinning for years, I was inspired by your videos to buy my first wheel a few months ago. Until yesterday Id been been respinning chunky yarn I harvested from a thrifted blanket and hand dyed. This year was my first going to the Wisconsin sheep and wool festival and my first time buying roving. I started in on my 8oz of BFL from Ewetopia and I cant put it down. Oooowww that green roving is luscious…… Would you do something to combine a small amount of the silk lap with the green roving? I have (tried to) spin lap and it was hard on my thumbs….. I ended up shredding and adding it to batts…. But wasn’t keen on my results.

I was there all 4 days in classes! You should organize a formal meet up of fiber groupies next year. I also bought one of the gorgeous silk lapps from Thorntree Pass (reds and oranges). I would love to see hiw you spin it for a weaving project since that is what I am hoping to do (I have never woven with silk).

Hi Evie! I was watching your channels to see if you mentioned when you would be there! I was there all three days and hoped I would run into you, oh well! I bought the same wheel basket last year and I love it, it holds a lot! I also got a pincushion kit last year - mine has the cute kitty on it - and she recommends crushed walnut for the filling. I think I recall you saying you have a nut allergy? I bought a bag of emery for my pincushion which worked out really well. I would be happy to share some with you, just let me know, I'd be happy to meet you somewhere to give it to you 😊 You will really enjoy going to Randy's workshop, he is multi-talented and will probably let you try out that wheel. My spinning guild visited with him last fall and he was so interesting! I'll be watching for your videos to see what you create with all your wonderful purchases!
Ah! My friend and i came first in the crochet relay race!! In our prize bag, there was roving from a blue faces leicester, and last year I had bought a turkish spindle, played with it for a week and put it away, but the winning of that roving made me dig it back out amd i used your video on plying to remember that bit, but when i went sunday, i was just spinning all day!

Great video Evie! I liked how you interjected with showing us your purchases in depth. I do wish there could be a resurgence in the wool industry….. We get zero return for wool here in NZ… in fact it costs! Sheep are being slaughtered in full fleece, and many farms (including our own) are dumping wool 😢 Naturally, the animal HAS to be shorn for its welfare, but as far as “profit”, it’s a dismal story. Get this: Carpets in many NZ schools are needing to be replaced and the NZ government has sourced carpet from AMERICA. I have nothing against America, but why isn’t our OWN wool being used????????
Thank you for taking me to your local Woolfest. I miss the big shows here, in UK, though things are improving. What struck me most was how similar the American and UK shows are in atmosphere, if not in size. The attendees’ body language is almost identical.
I'm intrigued by the silk lap, I've not seen that before! And I didn't know you could felt silk. Would love to see any videos you make on the topic. Very fun video:) I'm going to my first fiber festival in November and I can't wait!
You can't wet felt silk on it's own, but if you have a base of wool that you are felting, you can incorporate the silk in there and the wool will hold on to it. You can also needle felt the silk. I wanted to pop in here an leave a comment to clarify why I said felters love this kind of silk. On it's own, you would have a soggy mess, but with wool it's magical! I hope that clarifies it. 😊💜✨

Thank you for giving us a tantalising taste of the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival. I'm going to guess that you are planning on spinning the silk so that the colours don't end up run together and muddy. My suggestion would be to spin the silk as finely as you can and then weave it into a wonderful, glowing piece of fabric. Given that you don't have a huge amount, you may need to look at using some other fibres in the weaving project, e.g. use the silk for decorative edges and put linen in the middle. I'm sure you'll think up something interesting. Have fun with all the projects you brought home.

What a beautiful collection of things from the festival! Last month my sister and I participated in a yarn store crawl across East TN and had just a phenomenal time checking out all of our local yarn stores and supporting them by buying absolutely beautiful yarn. I would love to go to a festival like this. The sheep shearing demonstration was so cool! Honestly, watching the sheep get sheared just reminded me of the small number of vegans who won't wear wool because it's an animal by-product and I got a little mad. Obviously that little sheep was in great hands and so well taken care of. I'm sure she was happy to have her coat shorn for the hot september weather as well.. Thanks for a lovely video. The shearers are charging above the award rate and quoting an escalated price to shear. A 2500 head farmer friend said they would literally have to dig a big hole and cull their sheep. Cost of grain to feed the sheep has soared. The corellas ate out her crop of barley. The price of shearing and transport costs, farmers havent made any income. Yet the middle man, abattoirs and retail butchers are making the money. With lamb loin chops at $A34+/kg.
This was my first-time going to the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festive. I had a wonderful time. I saw you at the Sheep shearing demonstration. But didn't stop to say "Hi". I picked up one of the spindle baskets and a beautiful 50% Baby Camel and 50% Tussah Silk roving braid. Your right the must have been something about the blue/greens. Omg, I've spun on a pendulum spinning wheel before! They are a weird learning curve but super SUPER fun to spin on! The one I spun on had the pedal actually bending outwards from the floor instead of upwards from an arm. Love seeing that!
OMG! I miss this festival so much. I have been living in Texas for too long. I haven't even spun anything in years. I used to drag my little daughter along to the Wi Sheep and Wool Festival. She is a 38 year old woman now and a phenomenal knitter herself.
Ooh, I would definitely want to see what to do with those silk laps(?)/cloths. I was at a similar fair in the Netherlands recently though mostly focused on knit and crochet, but some of them also sold fibers. I'm a beginner spinner and I already have too much yarn, but not that much 'potential' yarn yet. So I was proud of myself for not buying any new stash yarn, but I did buy some fibers. One stand had the perfect (me/favorite) colors and they asked if I was also interested in a matching silk cloth thingy, I declined because silk was hard to spin! And I wasn't sure what to do with it, though I'm sure they would have explained if I asked. I bought some more at a different stand, it was in a big braid it's not rolags but I think just long thick strips of carded wool braided loosely together. My friend also got me some bamboo fibers to spin 😁 and I bought some natural dyes, and something (hydro sulphate?) I need to dye with indigo. So would love to see a video on what to do with the silk cloths and another thing I was wondering about. Maybe you have tips/ideas in how to spin a gradient yarn and then ply it as well so it's still a gradient. I got some bags of merino wool And they are all 5 similar amounts in different colors that are really close and match well together. I'd love to try and make a gradient yarn with them. I like to ply my spin yarn at least once, but not sure how to do this to make a nice gradient so that the first color partly overlaps with the second color then moves on to just that second color then overlap with the third color and so on... if you haven't done a video on this I would love that (if you of course are curious in how to do this too 😉) And since we probably won't meet irl soon, since I'm in Europe, Netherlands, I have learned so much from your channel! My first spinning teacher taught me the basics, but nothing about whorls and such and how to change anything if it isn't going to your liking. Thanks for making great videos!
I loved this video on the festival. So often these kinds of videos which just wander in a hyperactive way, trying to see and show it all and ending up not really showing much of anything except tantalizing snatches. I loved your more in depth looks at a few of the vendors, interspersed with interviews and commentary. And I was definitely impressed with the shearer. I've seen videos of course but also I've seen it in person by a team of shearers on a sheep ranch back in the 1970's. This fellow did the smoothest, cleanest shear I've seen. It's an art.

Went to my first fibre and yarn show last week with my friend. So much fun! Have banned us from going to another one for a while though as lots of money was spent. Went to a workshop on Tunisian crochet and it was really nice to break up the day and learn a new skill :D

Aus/NZ shearers are seriously fast, I cooked for them at one point and snuck in to watch them😄 They work so hard, so fast, but so perfectly!

Thank you for giving us a tantalising taste of the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival.
I'm going to guess that you are planning on spinning the silk so that the colours don't end up run together and muddy. My suggestion would be to spin the silk as finely as you can and then weave it into a wonderful, glowing piece of fabric. Given that you don't have a huge amount, you may need to look at using some other fibres in the weaving project, e.g. use the silk for decorative edges and put linen in the middle.
I'm sure you'll think up something interesting. Have fun with all the projects you brought home.

I usually do a walk through eyeing potential purchases, but when I saw the lone Rainforest, I bought it because I knew it wouldn’t be there later. Oh funny! I bet you were laughing as you watched me talk about it in the video! That was definitely me with the other two balls. What a beautiful collection of things from the festival! Last month my sister and I participated in a yarn store crawl across East TN and had just a phenomenal time checking out all of our local yarn stores and supporting them by buying absolutely beautiful yarn. I would love to go to a festival like this. The sheep shearing demonstration was so cool! Honestly, watching the sheep get sheared just reminded me of the small number of vegans who won't wear wool because it's an animal by-product and I got a little mad. Obviously that little sheep was in great hands and so well taken care of. I'm sure she was happy to have her coat shorn for the hot september weather as well.. Thanks for a lovely video. Can't wait to see what you get up to next.

🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🦘Good old Australian technique of shearing sheep. The sheep per head price in the industry has literally collapsed. $2 per head, sending farmers broke. The shearers are charging above the award rate and quoting an escalated price to shear. A 2500 head farmer friend said they would literally have to dig a big hole and cull their sheep. Cost of grain to feed the sheep has soared. The corellas ate out her crop of barley. The price of shearing and transport costs, farmers havent made any income. Yet the middle man, abattoirs and retail butchers are making the money. With lamb loin chops at $A34+/kg.
The system is broken 💔

This was my first-time going to the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festive. I had a wonderful time. I saw you at the Sheep shearing demonstration. But didn't stop to say "Hi". I picked up one of the spindle baskets and a beautiful 50% Baby Camel and 50% Tussah Silk roving braid. Your right the must have been something about the blue/greens. Thank you so very much for your RUclips videos.
I am in New Zealand and we have about 25 sheep and we have a mobile shearer that comes and I live to watch it and sort the fleeces. So special 😊
He talked about how fast the New Zealand competition shearers can work. He sounded very impressed!

Omg, I've spun on a pendulum spinning wheel before! They are a weird learning curve but super SUPER fun to spin on! The one I spun on had the pedal actually bending outwards from the floor instead of upwards from an arm. Love seeing that!
OMG! I miss this festival so much. I have been living in Texas for too long. I haven't even spun anything in years. I used to drag my little daughter along to the Wi Sheep and Wool Festival. She is a 38 year old woman now and a phenomenal knitter herself.

Ooh, I would definitely want to see what to do with those silk laps(?)/cloths. I was at a similar fair in the Netherlands recently though mostly focused on knit and crochet, but some of them also sold fibers. I'm a beginner spinner and I already have too much yarn, but not that much 'potential' yarn yet. So I was proud of myself for not buying any new stash yarn, but I did buy some fibers. One stand had the perfect (me/favorite) colors and they asked if I was also interested in a matching silk cloth thingy, I declined because silk was hard to spin! And I wasn't sure what to do with it, though I'm sure they would have explained if I asked. I bought some more at a different stand, it was in a big braid it's not rolags but I think just long thick strips of carded wool braided loosely together. My friend also got me some bamboo fibers to spin 😁 and I bought some natural dyes, and something (hydro sulphate?) I need to dye with indigo.
So would love to see a video on what to do with the silk cloths and another thing I was wondering about. Maybe you have tips/ideas in how to spin a gradient yarn and then ply it as well so it's still a gradient. I got some bags of merino wool And they are all 5 similar amounts in different colors that are really close and match well together. I'd love to try and make a gradient yarn with them. I like to ply my spin yarn at least once, but not sure how to do this to make a nice gradient so that the first color partly overlaps with the second color then moves on to just that second color then overlap with the third color and so on... if you haven't done a video on this I would love that (if you of course are curious in how to do this too 😉)
And since we probably won't meet irl soon, since I'm in Europe, Netherlands, I have learned so much from your channel! My first spinning teacher taught me the basics, but nothing about whorls and such and how to change anything if it isn't going to your liking. Thanks for making great videos!

I loved this video on the festival. So often these kinds of videos which just wander in a hyperactive way, trying to see and show it all and ending up not really showing much of anything except tantalizing snatches. I loved your more in depth looks at a few of the vendors, interspersed with interviews and commentary. And I was definitely impressed with the shearer. I've seen videos of course but also I've seen it in person by a team of shearers on a sheep ranch back in the 1970's. This fellow did the smoothest, cleanest shear I've seen. It's an art.

Went to my first fibre and yarn show last week with my friend. So much fun! Have banned us from going to another one for a while though as lots of money was spent. Went to a workshop on Tunisian crochet and it was really nice to break up the day and learn a new skill :D
