David Ruffin may have made the Temptations into international stars, but Dennis Edwards' contribution ensured that the Temptations would stay relevant and able to weather the changing musical climates in the coming decades. Ruffin is a stellar artist of amazing talent and charisma, but he feels like a throwback to a previous era of soulful serenaders and singers of lush ballads like Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson,. In this era where what we know as "soul music" doesn't exist yet. I don't think Ruffin was really able to adapt with the change in musical fashions. This can be seen in how spotty his solo career was after leaving the Temptations, and how he settled into the "rhapsodic disco"" genre, like Lou Rawls, a singer quite a bit like him. David Ruffin could never have carried the "psychedelic soul" era of the Temptations
Tell me about it. I was a teenager in the late '60s, early '70s, and I saw a number of kids I knew from the hood on the south side of Chicago who lived every bit of what this recording portrayed.
He used to do alot of The Choreography for them in their pre Motown Days. Their Career kind of parallels The Beatles. They went from singing She Loves You to Strawberry Fields. Now they go from My Girl to Runaway Child.
This made me cry with both joy and sadness; joy for the great song, stunning choreography and magnificent vocals. The Dennis Edwards years are my favorite Temptations era. That man was so hot and had a killer voice. The sadneess is that real talentand intelligent music is probably gone forever. WAP, indeed.

I was 12 years old and saw them perform this song, and many others at the University of Detroit, great performance. As a native, of Detroit the memories are emotional, mentally, and momentarily stressful but, you endure it all because you are an Detroiter, it who you are, where ever you are from you should always be a patriot to your town if it's been good to you.
I sorta remember the Temptations from when I was a kid. My sister and I had a babysitter who listened to them all the time . Recently a watched the videos I wish it would rain , as well as Papa was a Rolling Stone. Now when I have a little free time I search for other songs from them I may have missed. Its great to hear them again.
Listen to lyrics - to the harmony - this is talent - today's music has nothing on what Motown offered - today's music sucks big time - without auto tune they are lost
The Temptations were from Detroit, Michigan…”Motown”, or Motor City…as were The Miracles, or Smokey Robinson and The Miracles. I was in high school in Brooklyn when these two groups were riding high on the billboard charts 📈. Sadly, those days are long gone.
Dennis' voice was a force indeed. Providing a convicted and "in your face" delivery. David's voice was a bit more supple and nuanced, providing him with a bit more versatility due to that. They both were great singers
The greatest group to ever grace the stage.

Dennis,
Baddest soul brother of all time!
Paul Williams was an excellent dancer.
yes he was, I don't mind his singing either!

I consider Paul Williams and Melvin Franklin the best dancers in the group

what about David Ruffin ? he had style and charisma. both are great lead singers
No disrespect to David.I just listened to David era Temps today.

The transition from David Ruffin to Dennis Edwards was seamless. If anything, David had a more powerful voice, in my opinion.
