- This is the extended version of the LP. The video comes from the short version. So I had to make a DIY ;-)
Video : unknown director.
"Runaway Child, Running Wild" (shown as "Run Away Child, Running Wild" on the label of the original single) is a 1969 hit single for the Gordy (Motown) label, performed by The Temptations and produced by Norman Whitfield. The single was both the second from their landmark Cloud Nine LP, and the second of their "psychedelic soul" tracks penned by Whitfield and former Motown artist Barrett Strong.
Featuring all five Temptations - Dennis Edwards, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin, and Otis Williams) - trading verses and harmony lines, "Runaway Child, Running Wild" paints a tale of a young boy (presumably a preteen) who runs away from home after being punished for playing hooky. The boy wanders the dark streets alone, eventually realizing he cannot survive on his own, but cannot find his way home, and ends up lost, frightened by strangers, unfamiliar landmarks, and his own thoughts. "Runaway child runnin' wild," the Temptations tell the boy during the chorus, "you better go back home/where you belong".
The Temptations alternately express and depict his fears, with the tension of the record building to a climax over the first five minutes of the record. At this point, the vocals fade out, and the record briefly gives voice to its young protagonist, who cries desperately for his mother before fading into the mix. "Runaway Child" then segues into an extended instrumental passage, during which Earl Van Dyke's organ, Joe Messina's electric guitar, and Dennis Coffey's distorted wah-wah pedal guitar take center stage for four minutes. After the instrumental builds the song up to a second climax, the track is stripped to a bassline and repeating hi-hat figure, and The Temptations return to the mix to issue one final admonition to the runaway: "Listen to your heart beat/it's beating much too fast/go back home/where you belong".
The single version of "Runaway Child" only features the first five minutes of the song, fading out before the instrumental section begins.
"Runaway Child, Running Wild" is often cited as one of the best songs on the subject of runaways, and Temptation Otis Williams often hears from fans that the record's terrifying depiction of running away kept them from doing so as children.[1] The single peaked at number one on the Billboard Black Singles chart, and reached #6 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart.[2] Earl Van Dyke, who performs the prominent organ solo during the instrumental section of the record, recorded his own instrumental version of "Runaway Child, Running Wild", which was released as a single the same year.
Lead and background vocals by Dennis Edwards, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin, and Otis Williams
Instrumentation by The Funk Brothers, with featured solos by Earl Van Dyke (organ), Joe Messina (electric guitar), and Dennis Coffey (wah-wah guitar)

Runaway Child is truly classic
Yes indeed.
I remember telling my mom I'd run away. She told me that she didn't give a crap. Then, as I got older, she introduced me to that song.
The best R&B group in history
Sho u right!!!
Another piece of genius songwriting by Whitfield & Strong performed brilliantly as only the Temptations could!
A masterpiece!

This song had that funky sound but it also scared the crap out of me at ten years old. Looking at the lyrics now, I see why. This was a masterpiece and probably prevented more than a few runaways.
I never heard the long version. This was really psychedelic! Motown had issues with Whitford and Strong writing these kind of songs but as a child of the sixties, reality was what I wanted to hear. Wish there were more artists singing and rapping with this kind of consciousness now.
I Am More Artist #WatchTheThrone
"Masterpiece"? "Psychedelic"? A masterful use of Play On Words, Titles, & Phrases: the Proper Nouns Edition. "Masterpiece", my second favorite track by the Temptations, a song with the longest intro for any of their songs, finishes behind my all time favorite song overall, "Papa Was A Rolling Stone."
It's as if the "oldies" stations had forgotten about this one. One of the Tempts best!
@@virgilwyatt4632 Haha! "Papa" included a word I'd never heard anyone use but my own daddy:
Dadgummit! Also, Dagnabbit! Pseudo-profanity that was much cooler than the actual cusswords.
I agree, "Rolling Stone" was definitely one of their best.👌🏾
The system fights lyrics like these. They only want low frequency music which will pollute the minds of black children, and create a generation of zombies.
The Funk Brothers killing it!!!
Paul's voice was always the underguirding sound in the Tempts hypnotic harmonies. It defined the unforgettable quartet blend that aerated the lyrics of some of the most talented lead vocalists to ever spin, split, or toss a mike in the air, and have it all come together without missing a step, a beat, a note, or a begging plea! He was The Temptation from the do-wop to the psychedelic, and all way points in between. A lifetime of memories, created in such a brief period of history! 👑🎸🎵
Phenomenal Paul on 💯 as per usual
THE TEMPTING TEMPATIONS THATS HOW FAR I GO BACK WITH THESE LEGEND OH HARD HEAD OH HARD HEAD SANG MR.KENDRICKS.
My favorite Temp! He sang with so much pain and soul. To hear he was really in pain makes so much sense. I always wonder what "Standing On The Top" with The Temptations and Rick James would've sounded like if Paul was still alive. 😏👍🏾
Dennis was one the best lead singers who could interpret a song that you enjoyed.
@John Wagner: Absolutely!
I was 22yrs old had a 1969 Thunderbird with the fly way rooftop and riding down Lennox Ave playing runaway child
Lennox avenue?
Why don't we here this song more often on the stations that plays the oldies? It's one of my favorites.
Good question

In 2020 the long version is still a killer. Greatest vocal group ever. The Temptation.
Absolutely
It sure is a lot of people are surprised to find out how long some of these temptation originals really are and they were chopped to hell for radio.
Papa Was a rolling Stones another perfect example of 12-minute funk jam that they shot down the 6 minutes and then 3 minutes for AM radio.
There's quite a few great temptations songs like that which are fantastic this is one of my favorites I had the cloud 9 album back in the day and I knew the sing was stretched out which is just still just unbelievable the Bob Babbitt Bass and a whole lot more.
Lot of people thought it was James jamerson on base but no this was Bob Babbitt mostly on this album but still him and James were so close and their ability to convey some of the best bass funk
@@truckerkevthepaidtourist I'm so glad I grow up in this Era. The Funk Brothers were the truth.
I remember this song when I was kid! The words Painted a Vivid Picture of how life on the streets would be as a child, if you made the decision to run away from home just because you played HOOKIE from School and you can't go go out to play! The words struck a cord with me and were Frightening! Just the thought of walking down a Neon lighted streets, and not knowing where you're at or where you're going did it for me. No playing Hookie and No 🏃♀️ 🏃♂️ Away from home!! The words stuck with me throughout my entire life! I still listen to this song with my Grown Children and Grandchildren!
A Big Thank You to Berry Gordy and the Motown Wrighter's!!❤🙏 For releasing such an important 👏 Message Song 🎵 and Allowing the Talented Temptations to sing the song to the World! To listen to and learn from the song for many years to come!!

ANOTHER SONG, LOU RAWLS, SANG That is thought provoking for me is:..."GETTING OFF THAT DEAD END STREET!!"
As a child growing up in the 60's and 70's Those thought provoking songs 🎵 influenced my entire life. Obedience, Discipline, and Having Self Control, Learning to Love ❤ Yourself Enough, and also to listen to the Elders who took care of you, so that you could attain an education and a better life so that when you do come of age, you will learn how to take care of yourself!
The words were Frightening!! I was Afraid 😨 to Run Away From 🏡 Home!! Thank you Berry Gordy🙏 and the Motown Writers for allowing The Talented Temptations to Sing this Important Message Song 🎵 to the World!!
You better say that! Agreed!
i've been aware of this song since the 70's..but a lot of people forget about it...this was during the time that Motown's stars were finally allowed to speak about social issues instead of just singing pop songs. So songs like What's Going On, Living For The City, Ball of Confusion, War and others took their place along sides other great R&B protest songs......
+Gregory Hill Like the tune Dancing in the streets, most of the big motown and rock songs back then were protest songs, like Eve of destruction. Have a good one bro.
.....i don't think dancing in the street was anywhere near a protest song, where did you get that idea from...listen to the lyrics again, There'l be music playing, people swaying, dancing in the street"....it's about partying and having a good time....that is not what Motown was about at that time, protests and everything, the only one i can think of was War....other than Stevie Wonder who was a different cat with his "Blowing In The Wind"...they didn't want to offend the establishment, they wanted to make money....that was Berry Gordy's prime directive.... that's why they dressed the way they did, why they had to take etiquette classes, etc. etc....Berry was about keeping the good times rolling, and that meant not offending the establishment.....Have a good one bro...
+Gregory Hill According to the actors, dancing in the street was about finally getting out from under the man. You weren't around in the 60's with all the oppression and protest. Perhaps you should listen to the song again, and then check on the actors on what their published thoughts were.
I really don't know if dancing in the street was considered as a protest song but this I do know I live in Detroit Michigan I live three blocks from where the riots started in 67 after the riot the police had on a rule that if they'd scene more than two blacks walking together they consider that as a crowd and we're looking for trouble so I'm saying this that if we Dancing in the Street we are saying the hell with that two-person rule it was kind of rough here in Detroit I guess we are right in a sense have a blessed day

so psychadelic at the beginning.. I love this song
One of the best song ever, 50 years later and I still filling it.
Amazing song especially in these days and amazing video.
Music today is just full of profanity, disrespect of woman and not much originality like back then when they actually sang, wrote lyrics, and played musical instruments. There was so much talented singers making the best music in the black community. Detroit, New York, Philly, and across the nation. Cities had their own sound. Glad I grew up in that era
I WAS HUMMING THIS SONG. BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE I HEARD IT. TEMPTATIONS. SOUNDS GOOD!
DON'T MAKE EM LIKE THIS ANYMORE.
I'm 43 and dad played this and other Temptations songs. It's a lot of talk about how the Temptations would be nothing without David Ruffin. Just this song alone proves them wrong.
good!!!!
I’ve never heard this but the message is unavoidable and clear! Once you start listening you have to keep listening to see what happens in the end, that’s true story telling
Beginning...Middle ...End...👍⭐
Rev TM Chambers Jr brought me here Blessings and HUGS! 👑💜
This was the first song that I bought...in my life. I did not even know the name of the song at the time. I hummed a few bars, and the record store clerk knew just what I meant. A 45-record was 99 cents at the time, and there was a song on both sides of the record.
As a person that lived these years I can say that Dennis did that the Temps to a different level. David was fantastic and a true lead singer. But the new sound made the Temps superstars at a higher level!!! listen to the "sky the limit album"

On this day in 1969 {May 10th} the Temptations played at the White House at the request of First Daughter Tricia Nixon...
At the time the quintet's "Runaway Child, Running Wild" was at #12 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart; two months earlier on March 16th, 1969 it had peaked at #1 {for 2 weeks} on the R&B Singles chart...
And also at the time of their White House appearance they had two albums on Billboard's Top R&B Albums chart; "Cloud Nine" was at #1 and "Live at the Copa" was at #12...

No Temptations song is UNSUNG...remember that...our love for their songs is enough.
The group was indifferent, almost disappointed with Normans productions, believing he was getting away from their R&B style, and many of them had to eat their words when his idea of acid based riffs was well received

My sisters would play this song all the time (like I wasn't a huge Temp fan) because I would run away all the time, until my mother told me you don't have to run away, I'll help you pack and take you where you want to go. I wanted to go live in L.A. So the following weekend my parents packed me and their motor home up and took me to her older sister in L.A. My aunt and uncle were fantastic to me and glad to have me with them, but I felt abandoned (my guardianship was changed)and wanted to go home to Ohio. When came home a year and a half later I never even thought about running away again.I was 12 then and I moved back to So. This was the Temptation crossover to sykadelic rock and Cloud Nine and they made it happen big time
They were outstanding with Smokey, but Norman Whitfield took them them to new heights. My older sister bought this album. One of my other favs on the Cloud Nine album was I Need Your Lovin.
They won awards at that time. They hit the big time with Smokey. Do not get that twisted. It's called THE CLASSIC FIVE ERA for a reason! That is based primarily on the talents of Mr. DAVID RUFFIN! Dennis Edwards was incredible, but even HE said he was glad Norman Whitfield changed their sound more to his style of singing, because he couldn't sing songs like "My Girl" and "Since I Lost My Baby" the way Ruffin did.
Blessing all kids keep your eyes on prayers
I don't believe Music is cherished by young people because its just too accessible, its not a special treat any more, just another source in a hole range of entertainments. When I was young I was forever twiddling the dial of my radio trying to find something good to listen to. Not to mention, the disappearance of vinyl means we are listening to ever more compressed versions of songs that just don't sound as good.

Sad to say my life from the age 12-33 was hell on earth AND ALL MAMA ASKED ME TO DO WAS TAKE MY ASS TO SCHOOL AND DO A FEW CHORES BUT ON NO, I DIDN'T WANT TO DO WHAT SHE TOLD ME TO DO, I RATHERED A STRANGER MADE ME SELL MY BODY, GIVE MY BODY UP, NOT TAKE BATHS, NOT EAT WHENEVER i WAS HUNGRY, I GAVE UP MY EDUCATION, FRIENDS, FAMILY AND ALL FOR WHAT. Now I barley can remember them people but I;ll never 4 get that's fo sho. Thank You God for saving a young ignorant girl like me. Amen sTILL MY JAM THOU.

Through it all you are still here; and when you look at the fact that so many did not make it, that's a cause for a celebration all by itself. My story is not the same, but it parallels yours (rebellion, drugs, wrong crowd - and then a complete turnaround when I joined the Air Force) and I thank God for a praying mama, who didn't give up on me. I salute you and all of the "runaways" that made it out!!!
we all do dumb things no one lived a perfect life. even tho we have some who try to make it seem that way
